Black Friday 2019: All the best deals you can shop today

Ia menghubungkan istilah tersebut setelah munculnya kerumunan besar orang-orang pasca Thanksgiving tahun 1950-an.

Doorbusters Busted: Shoppers Rethink Black Friday

Black Friday isn't what it used to be. Just ask Chris Ott.

He married into a family that never missed the occasion. And let's just say, he really got into it.

After Thanksgiving dinner, they'd peruse Black Friday ads, developing a "really fun strategic plan — pick the store that we were going to wait outside of, we would divide and conquer," says Ott, 42, a cybersecurity engineer and youth pastor in the Denver area.

"It was so extreme for us that we'd be on vacation with family in Florida over Thanksgiving and we would wait outside the Best Buy in Orlando to see what we could get there," he adds with a laugh.

But lately, this family tradition has fizzled out. Stores kept opening earlier, cutting into Thanksgiving dinner. The Internet made it easy to price-check deals that started to seem less worthwhile. Online shopping became convenient.

Last year, "we decided we'd rather just put up Christmas decorations, and didn't even go," Ott says.

It's not just Ott. This year, only 36% of people said they planned to do most of their holiday shopping on Black Friday — down from 51% just three years ago, according to a survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

PwC survey, Holiday Outlook 2019

"Black Friday is still a very major event, both for retailers and for shopping. But historically, it's been the major event and now it's just a part of the overall season," says Steve Barr, who leads PwC's consumer markets practice.

Stores have "permanently conditioned" shoppers to expect big discounts on days other than Black Friday, Barr says. Retailers have made up additional shopping holidays like Cyber Monday and Prime Day. They've moved doorbusters back to Thursday and even Wednesday. This year, many started holiday sales in October.

To be clear, Black Friday is still the busiest shopping day of the year. "Our data shows that there's still a massive spike on Black Friday," says Brian Field of ShopperTrak, which tracks in-store foot traffic.

Of course, not everyone who visits a store actually buys something. Still, compared with the rest of the year, Field says, Black Friday also does better at attracting shoppers to stores.

But for the past two years, the number of people joining the tradition has inched lower. And some experts say, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

"It's a minor decline," Field says. "And it's probably more than made up for with the shopping that's happening online."

In fact, this year PwC found — for the first time — the majority of people planned to do their holiday shopping online instead of in stores.

PwC survey, Holiday Outlook 2019

Besides, stores have tried for years to make doorbusters a more pleasant experience, to tame the stampedes and the fights over toys and TVs. In the most infamous 2008 incident, some 2,000 riled-up shoppers literally burst through the doors of a Walmart in New York state, trampling a store worker to death.

And if you think about it, the doorbuster culture has stores fighting over shoppers who are mainly there because stuff is cheap — many of whom might not return until the following holiday season, says Peter Fader, professor of marketing at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Now, Fader says, more and more companies are realizing the real value is in loyal shoppers who are there all year, rather than fair-weather shoppers from one weekend in November.

"There's always the chance that we could turn that ugly duckling into a beautiful swan, but it's not that common," he says. "And you'd start to say, 'Whoa, wait a minute, why are we paying people double overtime to be here, to serve these not-so-great customers?' "

“It’s a ghost town," said Nicola Carmichael, 47, of Germantown, Md., who walked in a few minutes later and has been shopping on Black Friday for decades. “The early deals have already happened and the ambiance is just, look around: Nobody, nobody, nobody.”

This year’s Black Friday sales began in October, long before most Americans had even begun thinking about Thanksgiving. In the weeks since, retailers have pushed out non-stop “HoliDeals” and “Early Access” promotions aimed at getting consumers to spend early, and often, during an uncertain holiday season. A number of factors, including looming tariffs, winter storms and a shorter-than-usual shopping season, have continued to keep retailers on edge during what is typically their most lucrative period.

But for shoppers, it’s rendered Black Friday inconsequential.

“I thought it was going to be packed,” Anika Smith said as she thumbed through a rack of puffy vests at the Gap. “But no. All I see are 50-off signs and no people.”

For decades, Black Friday signaled the official start of the holiday shopping season, a day of unbelievably deep discounts that drew hordes of shoppers into stores. Retailers saved their best deals for the day after Thanksgiving, and consumers responded by turning overnight camp-outs and long lines into an American rite of passage.

Not anymore. The day has morphed into a months-long discount fest as retailers push the season’s boundaries to get shoppers to open their wallets. Walmart began this year’s holiday sale on Oct. 25, a full five weeks before Thanksgiving. Target followed two weeks later, with a day of “real” Black Friday deals including $200 markdowns on the iPhone 11 and half-off air fryers. World Market has been promoting “Black Friday All Month Long!” while Best Buy’s “Beat the Rush Sale” has dragged on for days.

Lyndon Johnson was expecting long lines when he showed up at a Best Buy in Arlington on Friday morning. But he breezed right in when the store opened at 8 a.m.

By 8:08, he’d already picked up a laptop -- marked down to about $1,000 from $1,300 -- and was on his way home.

“It doesn’t feel like Black Friday," he said. “It feels like a regular day with regular deals.”

Americans spent a record $4.4 billion online on Thanksgiving day, up about 20 percent from last year, according to estimates from Adobe Analytics. Nearly half of those sales came from mobile devices. Adobe expects online sales of $7.5 billion on Black Friday, and another $9.4 billion on Cyber Monday.

AD

The holiday shopping season — from Thanksgiving to Christmas — is six days shorter than it was last year, leaving retailers particularly anxious. Many merchants also have loaded up on inventory in anticipation of upcoming tariffs, which would raise the price of laptops, high chairs, winter gloves and other consumer goods beginning Dec. 15.

AD

“It’s a double whammy for retailers: They’ve got a bunch of inventory, and fewer days to sell it,” said Natalie Kotlyar, head of the retail practice at professional services firm BDO USA. “There’s a lot of concern that if they can’t sell it now, they’ll have to offer even bigger markdowns next year.”

Merchants also fear a repeat of 2018, when holiday spending grew a mere 2.1 percent instead of the projected 4.5 percent. The National Retail Federation expects 4 percent growth this year, to roughly $730 billion, but warns that economic head winds — including tariffs and stock market fluctuations — could push down consumer spending again. Consumer confidence, meanwhile, declined a fourth-consecutive month in November, the Conference Board reported this week.

AD

“There is significant economic unease,” Jack Kleinhenz, chief economist for the NRF, said last month.

AD

Complicating matters this year are coast-to-coast winter storms that may keep shoppers from heading to stores, according to forecasting service AccuWeather. Colder-than-usual temperatures in November have already led to declining store traffic, according to Joel Myers, AccuWeather’s chief executive, who recently downgraded his forecast for holiday spending growth, to 3.6 percent from 3.8 percent.

Meanwhile, the number of Americans who shop on Black Friday is declining, though this is partly due to the weeks-long discounting. An estimated 36 percent of U.S. consumers plan to shop on Black Friday this year, compared with 51 percent in 2016, according to professional services giant PricewaterhouseCoopers.

AD

“Black Friday has almost become a nonevent,” Kotlyar said. “Consumers are seeing this constant build up to Black Friday — promotion after promotion — and they’re waiting to see what comes next.”

AD

Getting a customer’s attention is far more difficult, analysts say, as doorbusters and steep markdowns are no longer enough. Instead, retailers are adding in hourly flash sales and daily deals designed to create a sense of urgency.

“Holiday shopping has become a game of discount chicken,” said Rob Garf, vice president of retail strategy and insights at Salesforce. “Retailers are offering deals earlier and earlier, but consumers are waiting longer to see if they can outsmart them at their own game.”

AD

The heavy discounting, analysts say, is a remnant of the Great Recession, when retail sales plunged to a 35-year low. Customers have since come to expect deals, leaving struggling retailers little choice but to keep cutting prices, biting into already-thin profit margins.

The rise of online shopping has also changed how — and when — Americans shop. Today’s consumers are more likely to buy one or two items at a time over a course of weeks, analysts say, instead of stocking up during a couple of trips to the mall, as they might have done 10 or 20 years ago.

AD

“Consumers are spreading out their holiday shopping, so retailers are responding by offering more promotions all season long,” said Katherine Cullen, senior director of consumer and industry insights for the National Retail Federation. “It’s becoming harder to predict when you’re going to find the best deals.”

AD

For years, Conor Orten made the rounds on Black Friday, picking up tablets, gaming consoles, LED lightbulbs and video games at Walmart, Best Buy and Target. But this year, he’s kind of over it.

Plus, he’s already picked up the TV he wanted.

“I kept seeing deals popping up all the time: 50 percent off, 60 percent off,” said Orten, 24, who works with hospice patients in Knoxville, Tenn. “But there’s still that voice in your head: Should I wait until Black Friday? What about Cyber Monday? Will the deals get even better?”

Finally, he says, he got tired of fretting. He bought a 50-inch TV, marked half-off, at Walmart.com for $200. And despite some lingering doubts, he says he’s — mostly — made peace with his purchase.

“I can’t spend my life waiting for the absolute best deal,” he said.

How to get the best deals for holiday shopping

How to get the best deals for holiday shopping

Black Friday might serve as the traditional kickoff to the holiday shopping season. However, that's not always when you'll find the best prices. Experts say waiting until after the shopping bonanza for some purchases might be wise.

Here's a quick look at when you can find the best deals on popular products.

Wait for Cyber Monday

Laptops and personal computers. Cyber Monday offers great tech deals, especially on all things computer: laptops, desktops and gaming PCs, said Kristin McGrath, editor and shopping expert at BlackFriday.com.. That's because retailers will mark down these playthings starting the week of Christmas.

That's because retailers will mark down these playthings starting the week of Christmas. Clothing. Retailers such as Old Navy and others typically discount heavily on Cyber Monday, so it's best to hold off on clothing purchases until Cyber Monday, when you can find sitewide discount codes.

Wait for "Travel Deal Tuesday"

If you have travel plans coming up, your best bet may be to search for flights and hotels on Tuesday, December 3, which flight-tracking service Hopper calls "Travel Deal Tuesday."

Flight and hotel prices are consistently the lowest in the post-Thanksgiving shopping period on this day, based on analysis of about 25 billion flight and hotel prices.

When is the best time to buy a real Christmas tree this year?

Wait until closer to Christmas

Toys and games. If it's not a popular toy in danger of selling out, wait closer to Christmas to buy your toys and games.

If you can hold off until a day or two before Christmas, you'll get great deals on holiday decor, she added. Of course, you'll get even better prices if you wait until the day after the holiday.

So what should you buy on Black Friday?

Televisions. The key here is to look for doorbusters, McGrath said. She notes that 4K televisions will likely to have their lowest prices of the year — and sales are likely to start on Thanksgiving day.

Once again Kohl’s is really standing out from its rivals thanks to Kohl’s Cash. As such it is likely to have the top Xbox One X, Nintendo Switch, PS4 Slim, Google Nest and Beats Black Friday deals this year. Kohl’s will also beat Amazon’s best deals on its own products when Kohl’s Cash is involved.

The only disappointing omissions the lack of a PS4 Pro deal (perhaps it will come for Cyber Monday) and any further TV offers, though this shows Kohl’s current live sales are the real deal right now.

USA TODAY

Will Black Friday become a thing of the past?

It depends on who you ask as the unofficial kickoff to the end-of-year shopping frenzy begins in earnest Friday. A new USA TODAY/Ipsos Poll looking at how people plan to shop this holiday season revealed a startling insight: most Americans will only buy this weekend if they can grab a sure-fire deal, with millennials preferring Cyber Monday over Black Friday. We spoke with current and former retail store employees and the consensus is this: you can still score doorbuster deals without the chaos of the holiday crowds.

Prefer the in-person Black Friday experience? We have some pointers

If you prefer to visit the stores, you can start by uncovering the right products at the best price on your smartphone or tablet. A handful of shopping apps are designed to sniff out great deals by alerting you to a fire sale on something you’ve had your eye on. Once you've done your homework, get an action plan together. Some retailers are offering limited freebies likecoupon giveaways and free items after mail-in rebate which are expected to go fast. But before you make a major holiday purchase, it's important to ask these four questions. If you don't, you may find yourself making a budget-busting mistake.

Thanksgiving, phase 2: The leftovers

It's time to reheat the Thanksgiving leftovers. Our friends at Grateful have a fool-proof cheat sheet to reheating your favorite dishes so they're as good as the first time around. (Rolls can go in your slow cooker. Who knew?) Grateful also has recipes for new meals made with leftovers, as well as tips on storing leftovers so they don't tragically end up in the trash.

Skip the shopping and hit the theaters ... or couch

One of the biggest holidays of the year deserves good TV and movies to go along with your leftovers. If you're hitting your local theater, "Knives Out" or "Queen & Slim" are good bets of having audiences talking for days. Or you can always catch up on the "Frozen 2" hype and its mad science trivia that's made us scratch our heads. But what if you want to stay inside? That's fine, too. There are plenty of quintessential holiday options available on various streaming platforms.

Travel woes possible: Winter storm isn't over yet

A strong winter storm weakened and moved to the northeast on Thursday. At the same time, a second storm pounded Northern California setting up the likelihood of heavy snow spreading across the northern tier of the country as travelers head home at the end of the weekend."A major winter storm will continue to produce heavy mountain snow and high winds across much of the Western United States through Thanksgiving Day before tracking over the Rockies on Friday," the National Weather Service said. Forecasters warned of the possibility of end-of-holiday travel delays from wet or snow-covered roads and flight delays because of low pressure moving into the East.

PARIS — People don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in France, or Russia, or South Africa – but they do shop on Black Friday.

The U.S. sales phenomenon has spread to retailers across the world in recent years with such force that it’s prompting a backlash from some activists, politicians and even consumers.

Workers at Amazon in Germany went on strike for better pay on one of the busiest days of the year. Near Paris, climate demonstrators blocked one of the retail giant’s warehouses to protest over-production they say is killing the planet. Some French lawmakers want to ban Black Friday altogether.

Consumer rights groups in Britain and some other countries say retailers use Black Friday as a slogan to lure in shoppers, but it’s not always clear how real or big the discounts are. Other critics say it hurts small businesses.

Globalized commerce has brought U.S. consumer tastes to shoppers around the world, from Halloween candy to breakfast cereal and peanut butter, sometimes even supplanting local traditions.

To French activists, Black Friday is the epitome of this shift, a purely commercial event designed to boost U.S. retailers ahead of the Christmas holidays, the symbol of capitalism run amok.

“The planet burns, oceans die, and we still want to consume, consume, and therefore produce, produce – until we eradicate all living things? … We will not betray our children for a 30% discount!” reads a manifesto by groups holding “Block Friday” protests around Paris.

In Britain, where the big winter sales have traditionally been held on the day after Christmas, companies have been adopting Black Friday marketing campaigns since about 2010. After a rise in business on the day in the first years, the volume of shopping has leveled off, with most of it happening online over multiple days.

Research by a U.K. consumer association found that 61% of goods advertised in Black Friday deals last year were cheaper or about the same price both before and after the event.

That echoes similar warnings in other countries. Russia’s consumer watchdog issued a long statement with tips on how to avoid getting fooled, like checking whether prices were raised before Friday to make deals look good or whether delivery costs are inflated.

The Black Friday advertising push has extended beyond the one day to Cyber Monday, with retailers in several countries spreading them across what’s often called “Black Week.”

In the Czech Republic, one electronics chain encourages shoppers – in English, of course – to “Make Black Friday Great Again,” in an ad featuring a suited man wearing the distinctive red cap used by U.S. President Donald Trump’s election campaign.

While the phenomenon is less widespread in Asia, some major companies like Japan Airlines use it as a slogan.

Broadcasters in South Africa showed people waiting in line to shop in one of the world’s most socially and economically unequal nations. The respected weekly Mail & Guardian newspaper decried in a scathing editorial how Black Friday is used to enrich big retailers.

“Like no other day, this Friday shows how broken the world we have built is,” it said. Among other concerns is that Black Friday could hurt small businesses that do not have the vast marketing budgets and online sales presence of big retail chains or multinationals.

In Italy, for example, Black Friday falls outside the season’s strictly defined schedule for when the winter shop sales can be held. This year, sales cannot be held from Dec. 5 until Jan. 4, when stores are allowed to clear out stock. The fashion industry has warned that can hurt smaller retailers in a country that relies on them heavily.

A French legislative committee passed an amendment Monday that proposes prohibiting Black Friday because it causes “resource waste” and “overconsumption.” France’s e-commerce union, whose members are aggressively marketing Black Friday sales throughout November, has condemned the measure.

Dozens of French activists blocked the Amazon warehouse in Bretigny-sur Orge on Thursday, spreading hay and old refrigerators and microwaves on the driveway. They held signs in front of the warehouse gates reading “Amazon: For the climate, for jobs, stop expansion, stop over-production!”

The activists were later dislodged by police.
