CLOSE The evil doll from "The Conjuring" movies haunts young Judy Warren (Mckenna Grace) in the new horror film "Annabelle Comes Home." USA TODAY

Things go bump in the night frequently in "The Conjuring” universe, namely thanks to folks like the Crooked Man, the Nun and that creepy Annabelle – and, unfortunately for the ghostbusting couple at the heart of the movie series, they’re all hauntingly connected.

Headed up by James Wan, “The Conjuring” films have become a horror version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with spinoffs, characters who cross over between movies, and a couple of primary do-gooders in real-life paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga).

The true “Conjuring” MVP, though? That’d be Annabelle, the macabre doll/demonic conduit who’s appeared in more films than Ed’s guitar skills. The most dangerous item in the Warrens’ room of fantastically freaky artifacts returns for her third “solo” movie “Annabelle Comes Home” (in theaters Wednesday).

These fright fests – which, interestingly, lean very female in terms of protagonists and antagonists – scare up decent box office, too: Four of the six so far have topped $100 million. Of course there’s more to come, with “The Conjuring 3” (out Sept. 11, 2020) now filming and a sequel to “The Nun” in development, as is a spinoff with “Conjuring 2” creeper Crooked Man.

To mark the release of the latest, here are all the “Conjuring” movies, ranked from worst to best:

Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) is haunted by the demonic nun Valak (Bonnie Aarons) in the "Conjuring" spinoff "The Nun." (Photo: COS AELENI/WARNER BROS.)

7. ‘The Nun’ (2018)

The 1950s-set prequel is an early story of Valak (Bonnie Aarons), the demon nun that stalks Lorraine in “The Conjuring 2,” and the priest (Demian Bichir) and the young novitiate (Taissa Farmiga) who encounter her while investigating a suicide at a Romanian abbey. There are hints of religious mystery and old-school adventure, but it’s a mostly dull and arduous entry that totally wastes Aarons’ chilling villainess of the cloth.

6. ‘Annabelle’ (2014)

On paper, it draws some “Rosemary's Baby” comparisons with a pregnant woman battling a malevolent force and the involvement of a devil-worshipping cult. If only it held a candle to that classic: The first “Annabelle” sics the evil doll on a young couple (Annabelle Wallis and Ward Horton) and their baby in 1967, with Father Perez (Tony Amendola) stepping in to try and exorcise the porcelain menace, yet this is a clichéd disappointment rather than good unholy terror.

5. ‘The Curse of La Llorona’ (2019)

Its connection to the rest of the “Conjuring” saga is glancing, with a cameo from Amendola’s Perez (and a flashback-y glimpse of Annabelle), and overall the film is a so-so tale of a widow (Linda Cardellini) and her kids beset by a supernatural entity. It’s a shame because "La Llorona" mines Mexican folklore to unleash a ghostly weeping woman in a wedding dress (Marisol Ramirez), whose terrifying look and sinister intentions rank right up there with the franchise’s best baddies (or worst, as the case may be).

Lulu Wilson stars as an orphan girl who learns that stuff goes bad when a certain doll is around in the 1950s-set "Annabelle: Creation." (Photo: WARNER BROS.)

4. ‘Annabelle: Creation’ (2017)

The possessed plaything gets an origin story here, as we go back to the ‘50s with a dose of childhood tragedy and some young scream queens (or is it princesses?). Talitha Bateman and Lulu Wilson are orphan girls who come to live in a house where Annabelle’s taken up residence, which means a lot of sleepless nights for everyone involved. “Creation” offers a few decent scares but mainly a lot of familiar tropes in a forgettable package.

3. ‘Annabelle Comes Home’ (2019)

Third time’s the occult charm: The doll’s new disco-era flick features the Warren family but puts the focus on young daughter Judy (Mckenna Grace). She has a bit of her mom’s innate sense for the otherworldly, which helps when the kid and her babysitters (Madison Iseman and Katie Sarife) have to survive one crazy night: Annabelle is inadvertently taken out of her case and lets loose the evils of the artifact room, including a hellhound and the frightening Ferryman. It’s the funniest of the “Conjuring” series and an ode to ‘70s and ‘80s teen horror flicks.

2. ‘The Conjuring’ (2013)

When the first “Conjuring” hit, it was like a breath of cold, musty, goosebump-inducing air – in a good way! The Warrens are called to a cursed Rhode Island farmhouse to dig into the supernatural goings-on that are creating a regular nightmare for the resident family. Wan does wonders with camera angles, panning shots, sound effects and other old-school techniques to create an unnerving atmosphere, balanced by the uplifting, grounded personalities of Ed and especially Lorraine.

1. ‘The Conjuring 2’ (2016)

Both main “Conjuring” movies are quite good – especially compared to the spinoffs – but No. 2 rules by tapping a religious vein similar to the original “The Exorcist.” The sequel mines two real Warren cases, the infamous Amityville Horror and the Enfield Poltergeist, and the latter gives rise to the main plot of a possessed 11-year-old girl (Madison Wolfe). Freakier than the first film, “The Conjuring 2” turns “This Old Man” into a whistled theme of impending doom as one of its many ghoulish delights.

The Pitch: Famed paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) keep some of the world’s most dangerous occult objects contained in the artifacts room of their family home. The most dangerous of them all is the demonic doll Annabelle, which Lorraine warns is a “beacon” for other evil spirits, locking her in a sanctified glass case for additional spiritual protection.

But when the Warrens leave their ten-year-old daughter Judy (Mckenna Grace) alone one night with her babysitter Mary Ellen (Madison Iseman) and the sitter’s devil-may-care best friend Daniela (Katie Sarife), Annabelle conjures up an escape of her own, with the rest of the Warrens’ spooky menagerie in tow.

“Not All Ghosts Are Bad”: The Conjuring series has had a spotty track record up to this point. Aside from the first installment and the surprisingly intriguing Annabelle: Creation, the retro-horror franchise has leaned harder on cheap jump scares over time than a successful execution of its throwback ’70s atmosphere. Good or bad, each film in the franchise (yes, even La Llorona) has masked schlockier tendencies under the inherent respectability of the films’ period settings and deliberate evocations of classic horror films like The Amityville Horror.

Annabelle Comes Home is a deliberate course correction for the series, and a somewhat refreshing one at that. It’s a down-and-dirty spookfest with absolutely no greater pretensions than to drag its characters (and by extension, the audience) through a relatively harmless haunted house experience. The scope and the stakes are low: while the Warrens bookend the film, Annabelle Comes Home keeps its primary focus on Judy and her teenage babysitters going through the worst sleepover of their lives, dodging all manner of inventive spooks and scares along the way.

Grace, Iseman, and Sarife are winsome leads, with stalwart Annabelle series scribe Gary Dauberman (making his directorial debut here) establishing clear dynamics for them to play with throughout. Judy is an awkward girl with latent psychic abilities just trying to enjoy herself before her eleventh birthday; Mary Ellen is the Laurie Strode type, as committed to Judy’s protection as she is her crush on an adorable classmate; Daniela’s the free spirit whose recklessness sets the film in motion. (Dauberman thankfully weaves in a reasonable motivation for Daniela to open all manner of doors she’s not supposed to, even if it still ultimately reads as a contrivance.) It’s not the most sophisticated stuff, but the young actors carry the film’s economical storytelling with aplomb.

Hell No, Dolly: While the first hour of Annabelle Comes Home soaks its audience in its groovy ’70s setting, Dauberman lets his considerable coterie of creatures loose in the second half, which is where his feature really kicks into high gear. (Expect plenty of needle-drops courtesy of the Warrens’ record player, just one of numerous tchotchkes in their Brady-fied pad.) The Conjuring series to date has mostly leaned toward the subdued, but Comes Home firmly roots itself in the territory of John Carpenter at his most playfully cruel, delighting in throwing all manner of creepazoids in the direction of its terrified teens and watching them scream and squirm.

The Warrens’ everyday domesticity has always made for an interesting contrast with their demonic encounters; while their presence is sparse in Annabelle Comes Home, their house maintains that uncanny mix of the domestic and supernatural. Dauberman mines oodles of tension out of everyday ’70s trappings like Feeley Meeley (an old board game where you reach into a dark box to retrieve items, a surprisingly effective vehicle for suspense) and a color wheel lamp on Judy’s nightstand.

Too Many Kooks: While its cast and stakes are sparse, Annabelle Comes Home overdoes it when it tries to expand the Conjuring universe’s existing bench of monsters. Annabelle’s the ringleader (her presence restricted mostly to that dead-eyed stare creeping up when you least expect it), but she also commands ghoulies like The Ferryman, a demon with coins over its eyes, or a blood-soaked wedding dress that possesses whoever wears it. (The most absurd is a werewolf, rendered with some of the weakest CG you’ll see all year.) While the scares work in isolation, there are only so many jump scares one can employ before the audience builds up its tolerance. After a while, Annabelle becomes more exhausting than exhilarating, sustained only by its game cast.

The Verdict: Annabelle Comes Home feels like a neighborhood haunted house burdened with a few too many gags, and featuring about as much story. It’s a shallow exercise in gimmicky scares, but that might be its greatest virtue: it’s a horror film of modest aspirations, avoiding the convoluted mythology of the rest of the series by planting a bunch of scary stuff in a room and setting it off. It all amounts to empty calories, but it satisfies in the moment.

Where’s It Playing? Annabelle Comes Home jumps out of the shadows and yells ‘boo!’ starting June 26th.

Trailer:

Annabelle Comes Home - "The Artifact Room" Featurette

The most evil and cursed objects are held within this locked room in the home of demonologists Lorraine and Ed Warren. Come take a peek inside, won't you?

A moving piano bench, uncontrollable nose bleeds and an unexplained loss of power in a production trailer are just a few of the eerie experiences the cast and crew of “Annabelle Comes Home” had during the shoot.

Twelve-year-old star Mckenna Grace, who plays the daughter of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, respectively) in the movie, had experiences she couldn’t explain.

“There’s a lot but I’ll start with a short one: I woke up one morning and I had this weird, small cut near my hairline on my forehead and it was in the shape of a triangle,” she told TheWrap. “I was really freaked out, and I got really scared because Gary Dauberman [director] had told me I was abducted by aliens, and I started researching. I literally thought I had gotten abducted by aliens.” A creepy coincidence: while Grace was explaining her experience, she said a car just passed her and it had a picture of an alien on it.

“And I’m just starting with the least scary experience,” she added. “When all of us were on set together for the first time, the lights went out and we were all freaking out and asking, ‘Annabelle, are you there?’ Then, the lights turned back on and my nose was bleeding so heavily. It happens sometimes because of allergies but not this heavy — as soon as I left set to get a tissue, it stopped.”

The “Conjuring” universe films have a longstanding tradition of inviting a priest on set to bless the production — for “Annabelle Comes Home,” a priest blessed the set on November 7, 2018.

“He actually did it in the artifact room and he stood there and he had this iPad and he was reading out of that and the Bible, and he was throwing holy water around and it was really cool to watch,” Grace said. “He blessed me, [costars] Madison [Iseman] and Katie [Sarife].”

But the paranormal still had a way of wreaking havoc on Grace and Patrick Wilson, as well as visiting journalists and certain artifacts in the replica of the famed Warren artifact room.

According to the production notes, a piano bench in the artifacts room “moved overnight on several occasions, though no crew members were working, and the stage was locked.” When a journalist visited set one day, his watch “went haywire, with it changing time, speeding up and jumping ahead hours at a time. But when he put it on the next day, the time was accurate and everything was back to normal.”

Grace, who plays 10-year-old Judy Warren, also experienced things like “unexplained loss of power in her trailer, doors that she found open when they had been shut, a shadowy figure asleep in one of the empty rooms on location,” and more. She explained that the lights in her trailer didn’t work one day but all the other trailers around her were fine, and that there was a funky smell that went away when everything was fixed.

She had also been gifted a rainbow-colored rosary, according to the production notes, and one day when she was wearing it, the crucifix on the necklace fell off and dropped to the floor.

“I was wearing it and all of a sudden it just broke,” Grace said. “I had been wearing it all day and nothing happened. It just broke — it was the strangest experience.”

According to the production notes, “also during filming, Grace brought a new instant camera to set to take pictures with cast and crew, but every time she snapped a photo with Annabelle in it, the picture came out black. And in a photo with Patrick Wilson, a black mark appeared over the cross he was wearing, obfuscating the holy symbol.”

Grace explained further: “I brought my camera and I took photos of everyone, and when I would take photos of Annabelle, every time, it would come out black. I took a photo of with her two different cameras, and both times, it came out black. Every other photo was fine. I thought it maybe was the camera reflecting the case, but I took the photos of her outside the case. I also took a photo of me, Vera and Patrick, and Patrick wears this big cross in the movie, and when I took the picture, the cross was whited out in the photo with black stuff around it.”

During one safety test run of a scene, a glass case fell over right where she and Iseman were standing. A witch bottle Grace received as a gift after wrap started heating up out of nowhere, which made the wax melt off and burn her hand.

But maybe the eeriest on-set experience Grace had occurred during the filming of a scene that required Grace and Iseman to walk down a hallway — where Annabelle herself made an appearance.

“Madison and I had a scene where we had to walk down a corridor, and we heard three knocks on a door but the camera was rolling so we kept going,” she said. “We did it a third time and we heard it again. At that point, I asked Madison if she heard it and we both thought it was weird. In the first ‘Conjuring,’ three knocks is a sign of the holy trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We opened the door and Annabelle was sitting there in a rocking chair. We thought the guys were just messing with us. The next take, we heard the knock again and we opened the door again — and Annabelle was gone.”

Wilson and Farmiga reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren from “The Conjuring” films. Dauberman is directing the film from a screenplay he wrote, from a story by Dauberman and James Wan, who created the franchise.

Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Victoria Palmeri, Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear, Michelle Morrissey, and Atomic Monster’s Judson Scott served as executive producers. Wan and Peter Safran, who has produced all the films in the “Conjuring” universe, are producing.

“Annabelle Comes Home” is the third film in the spin-off series, and follows Ed and Lorraine Warren who decide to bring the possessed doll to the locked artifacts room in their home. But of course, when her daughter and her friends visit the room a year later, Annabelle is unleashed.

“Personally, I don’t know if I believe in ghosts or not,” Grace concluded. “I am torn because there are logical explanations but there are also things that cannot be explained.”

“Annabelle Comes Home” hits theaters on June 26.
