Portarlington train station in Laois was evacuated on Tuesday around 4 pm after a fire broke out in a maintenance workshop, a stone building that runs next to the platform.

Fire brigades from four stations attended the blaze and there has been extensive damage to the roof of the workshop.

The gallery of pictures above by Ray Commins shows the emergency services in action and some of the damage at the station.

Dublin Cork Limerick Galway commuter trains hit with delays after fire at Laois train station.

Navy officials said Tuesday that an investigation continues into a fire that broke out on board the mine countermeasures ship Devastator last week.

The blaze began about 8 p.m. local time Thursday while the vessel was tied up at the Naval Support Activity Bahrain’s pier but no one was injured, according to a U.S. Naval Forces Central Command release.

Crew members from the ships Sentry, Gladiator, Dextrous and Whirlwind joined Devastor’s sailors to battle the flames, as did members of the base fire department, and it was extinguished about an hour later, officials said.

The Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center and the ship’s superior command — Naval Surface Squadron 5 — continue to assess the damage, spokeswoman Lt. Chloe Morgan told Navy Times.

The Devastator is one of 21 ships deployed to U.S. 5th Fleet, an area that encompasses 2.5 million square miles of water, including the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea and Red Sea.

The vessels also patrol key choke points for the free flow of global commerce such as the Suez Canal, Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al Mandeb Strait at the southern tip of Yemen.

Launched nearly 31 years ago, Devastator is the sixth of 14 Avenger-class mine countermeasures ships.

The Fire Department will get at least one of its requested three new engines following the results of a special town meeting last month, which approved a $750,000 allocation from the town’s fund balance for a new pumper truck.

The new truck will replace one of three department vehicles that have been in service for 25 years or longer and are now selected for replacement.

“There are essentially three apparatus that have been identified as having to replace,” said Fire Chief Paul Januszewski. The three engines were selected for replacement in 2014.

Januszewski said that the department has applied for a FEMA grant that would cover the cost of one truck, and that they hope to hear about the results of their application for that grant by the end of March. The fire department has also allocated $300,000 for a used ladder truck in its proposed 2019 budget.

Repairs to the engines’ systems are becoming more frequent, according to the department.

“The constant maintenance and the constant downtime is impacting our operations,” Januszewski said. “We’re holding off on sending our additional apparatus for more repairs because we can’t have more than, typically, one apparatus out at any given time.”

The Board of Finance (BOF) proposed the $750,000 allocation at its January meeting. Januszewski said that the new vehicle will be built to their specifications. Construction of the vehicle is expected to take 10 to 12 months.

“By doing this now…instead of having to wait, let’s say for the next budget and doing this July or August, we can get a good six months head start on the ordering,” Januszewski said.

The BOF made the decision to purchase the vehicle with the town’s rainy day fund rather than lease it to keep the added cost from affecting the town’s mill rate calculations.

First Selectman and BOF member Mike Freda spoke in favor of the proposal.

“This is why we have a fund balance. This is why we have healthy reserves,” Freda said.

Other citizens and members of the Board of Fire Commissioners defended the proposal. One citizen, Nancy Barrett, spoke in favor of delaying the vote until after the results of the FEMA grant application is returned.

“Why should we pay for a new pumper engine when we might get it for free?” she said. “It is clear that we need to replace aging apparatus, however I think that we should make such a major purchasing decision only when we have all of the best information.”

The fire department’s 2019 budget also calls for funds to hire six additional firefighters to meet a call volume that Januszewski said has increased by a rate of six- to eight percent every year. Januszewski has also suggested that the department would like to hire eight firefighters in addition to the six requested in the budget.

Additional items in the budget would go to purchasing more safety equipment, like bulletproof vests, for firefighters.

The vote to approve the pumper truck purchase passed with no votes in opposition.

Located on Wilton’s westside, situated on a cul-de-sac, the 1984 custom-built colonial at 39 Marvin Ridge Place is listed for $929,000 by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, New England Properties.

The sellers of the home, BJ and Steve Bralower, acquired the property in 2008, after pinpointing Wilton as a town that would place them near family and the Merritt Parkway. BJ Bralower had grown up in nearby Westchester, so she was familiar with the area.

“We were downsizing, but not yet ready for a condo,” the Bralowers explained in an email. “We still wanted to have some property to enjoy. When we came upon 39 Marvin Ridge Place it met just about every criterion we had: beautiful area, three bedrooms, great entertaining kitchen, and a first-floor master bedroom.”

Among the nearly 3,200 square feet of living space, buyers will find a formal living room with a fireplace, a formal dining room, family room and eat-in kitchen, as well as a four-season solarium.

“The kitchen has functioned as a great work and gathering space. There is plenty of room for friends and family to gather around while we’re entertaining,” the sellers wrote. “It’s especially nice to have the sitting room as part of the kitchen, so everyone can be together as the meal is being prepared. And it doesn’t hurt to have the fire going right there on cold evenings.”

One of the many updates they’ve made to the home was converting the sitting room’s fireplace to gas.

During their years here, the homeowners made a number of other improvements, including planting some landscaping elements to the front yard, installing a sprinkler system, and strategically adding driveway lighting. They also rebuilt the deck with composite Fiberon-brand building materials, creating a maintenance-free outdoor living space.

The Bralowers also added insulation to the attic crawl spaces and to the perimeter of the basement. French doors were added to both the living room and sunroom. New skylights were fashioned, and the entire exterior of the home was painted in the fall of 2017, according to the sellers.

In addition to the first-floor master bedroom, there are two large bedrooms on the second floor, as well.

Details Address: 39 Marvin Ridge Place, Wilton Price: $929,000 Number of Rooms: 8 Features: Custom-built in 1984, this single-family Cape Cod-style home is located on a 1.27-acre lot, on a cul-de-sac that’s close to the New Canaan border. It has three bedrooms, including a first-floor master suite, and 3,195 square feet of living space, with hardwood flooring throughout most of the home, and a tiled floor in the four-season solarium. The floor plan also comprises a formal living room, formal dining room, eat-in kitchen and two-story family room. Off the rear of the house, a Fiberon-brand deck is in place for outdoor living and dining. The attached garage has two bays, and a whole-house generator ensures that power is never lost, even during bad weather and storms. Schools: Cider Mill School, Middlebrook School, Wilton High Open House: Sunday, March 10, 2 - 4 p.m.

This property has a 1.27-acre lot that the listing broker describes as “manicured.”

Asked about the neighborhood vibe and what it has been like to live on this street and to be a part of the greater Wilton community, the sellers said, “We have the best neighbors and are grateful that we ended up on a street with such wonderful friends. That’s certainly something we’ll miss when we move.

“Wilton has been a great place to spend the past 11 years,” they continued. “It is such a beautiful part of Connecticut. We’ll miss the lush greenery and the picturesque stone walls, for sure. As for downtown, just about anything you might need you can find in town. It’s really nice to walk into the shops and be recognized by name. We’ll definitely miss the Village Market and Wilton Hardware.”

HOUSTON (AP) — Crews have extinguished a at a Houston-area petrochemicals storage facility.

International Terminals Company says the blaze in Deer Park was extinguished as of 3 a.m. Wednesday. The fire began Sunday at the facility southeast of Houston, sending a huge, dark plume of smoke thousands of feet in the air, though officials said air quality remained safe.

ITC says crews will continue to spray foam and water on the storage tanks that caught fire to cool them down and prevent the fire from reigniting.

The company says steam and smoke will be visible, and the fire could still flare back up.

The tanks that caught fire contained components of gasoline and materials used in nail polish remover, glues and paint thinner.
