When asked about the difference in quality of the two sides, Jose told Sky Sports: “12 points. It’s 12 points. I think our team is improving a lot. Even defensively conceding three goals today, I would say it was a positive performance defensively – apart from the individual mistakes.
”Since the beginning of the season, we are conceding too many goals with responsibilities from, I would say, the back four. That was not the case today. We’ve paid with points with the many mistakes that we were making but, you know, we said we knew there was a difference of potential since the beginning of the season.
Premier League leaders Manchester City turned on the style with a 3-1 win over Manchester United in their derby clash, leaving Pep Guardiola's unbeaten side two points clear of Liverpool. David Silva fired City ahead in the 12th minute after a Raheem Sterling cross from the left was turned back across the goal by Bernardo Silva and the Spaniard took his time before blasting home. City doubled their lead in the third minute after the interval - Aguero bursting goalwards and playing a clever exchange with Riyad Mahrez, before thumping the ball, from a tight angle, past David de Gea. United manager Jose Mourinho brought on Romelu Lukaku for Jesse Lingard in the 57th minute and within seconds the Belgian forward helped get his team back in the game. Lukaku was brought down inside the area by City keeper Ederson and French forward Anthony Martial confidently converted the spot kick. But four minutes from the end City secured the victory, their 10th in 12 games this season, when the influential Bernardo Silva picked out substitute Ilkay Gundogan in the area and the German made no mistake as he made it 3-1. Eighth placed United are now 12 points behind City. Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Mendy, Fernandinho, Bernardo, Mahrez, D. Silva, Sterling, Aguero. Manchester United XI: De Gea, Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, Matic, Herrera, Fellaini, Lingard, Martial, Rashford. MANCHESTER CITY 3-1 MANCHESTER UNITED | D. ‘We were in the game’ 18:50: Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho: "My first thoughts? The first is that we lost, the obvious one. The second is that we were in the game until the 80th-something minute and the third goal killed the spirit and morale of the team. "One thinking is a bad performance and one thing is a performance with mistakes. I think ours was a performance with mistakes. It is football and for me it is even more football when we have a week where we play three consecutive matches away and Manchester City play three consecutive games at home. Our last match against Juventus left some scars in the team. "For me zero words against my players, everything is positive. I am with them and they are with me. "There is a gap, Manchester City start playing from the beginning of the season at a certain level that allows them to get a lot of points. Now we are a much better team than at the beginning of the season when we lost a lot of points."

‘Mistakes’ 18:45: Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it is not a bad performance at all. It was a performance with mistakes and we paid for it. All three goals are our mistakes. Against a team like City, if you make mistakes you will get punished. "We had two matches away [Juventus and then City], it is not the physical effort but the mental pressure. I think some of the boys felt it a little bit. "The first one is a bad one to concede and the second one is even worse. The third goal kills everything. "Everybody has to agree. It is one thing to go to Juventus and play against one of the best teams in the world for 90 minutes. Another thing to beat Shakhtar Donetsk at home 6-0 and be very relaxed. We arrive in different circumstances. "We cannot lose the ball the way we did. It is not about David de Gea, it is about the way we lost the ball." ‘Tough’ 18:43: Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini: “It was a derby game, both teams want to win it but it was a tough game. High intensity. We had a tough week with three games away, we competed, tried our best. It is frustrating for us."

‘Worked well’ 18:40: Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan speaking to Sky Sports: "Unfortunately we weren't able to score more than two last time but today we scored three and won the game so we're very happy. "It was very important to score the third one. They have ability to create chances. The third one killed it because it was so late. He told me to keep the rhythm high and use the spaces. I played in the middle of David Silva and Fernandinho. We wanted to keep the ball and it worked out well.” ‘Nice’ 18:38: Man City striker Sergio Aguero: "For me it was more important to get three points but it's always nice to score.” 44 passes 18:35: I mean… just look at this. The chart above shows that there were 44 passes in the build-up for Ilkay Gundogan's goal. That’s the most before a goal in the Premier League since Juan Mata scored for Manchester United against QPR in September 2015 (45).

Twitter round-up Andrew: In truth, City are on another planet in compared to United. Bounce back in 2 weeks time. Joe: The worst we’ve ever played in a derby. And I include the 6-1. At least we looked like scoring at some point in that match. This time we did nothing worthy of a goal, including the pen. What did Lukaku do apart from win the pen by the way? Answer - nothing. Williams: Maybe Mourinho will learn that their best form of defence is attack. Average defence but talented forwards and he can’t get the best out of them. Naughty Sterling 18:30: I’ve not seen that very often. 'Ole' was the repeated call from the City fans as they kept possession towards the end of the match. But Pep Guardiola didn’t appreciate it. The Spanish tactician raced onto the field and had strong words with Raheem Sterling following England international's showboating in the dying seconds.

MANCHESTER CITY 3-1 MANCHESTER UNITED FT: It’s over. Manchester City have beaten arch-rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. It got a little bit nervy after Anthony Martial’s penalty - but in truth, City dominated from start to finish and always had more left in the tank. 92: I suppose the scary thing is that Manchester City haven’t nearly been at their best today. They can play better, and we’ve seen them play better. Ole, Ole, Ole’s are coming from the home supporters. They are loving this. 90: Three minutes of added time. 89: David Silva trots off to a heroes reception as Phil Foden replaces him for the remaining minutes. MANCHESTER CITY 3-1 MANCHESTER UNITED | GUNDOGAN 86: Game over. City have secured the three points, and perhaps more importantly, the bragging rights for the next few months as substitute Ilkay Gundogan restores their two-goal advantage. 44 passes led to that goal with Bernardo Silva eventually delivering an inch-perfect cross for Gundogan, who has time to control and fire City back above Liverpool.

83: I don’t really know how but Manchester United are still within touching distance of a point at the Etihad Stadium today. City have had 16 shots to United’s five and 66 percent possession. Just one goal separates the sides though. Drama incoming? 80: Leroy Sane guilty of trying to walk it into the net. He exchanges a few passes with Sterling before hitting a wall of red shirts. Final ten minutes - what can these sides conjure up?! 79: “It’s a proper derby now,” Martin Tyler says excitedly on Sky Sports. Raheem Sterling carries the ball to the edge of the Manchester United area but the through ball to Leroy Sane is a little too fast. De Gea hacks clear. 76: What a waste. It should be game, set and match for City as they find themselves in a 4 vs 2 situation - but Leroy Sane wildly strikes over the crossbar. Good conversion though… Sergio Aguero is replaced by Ilkay Gundogan. Pep Guardiola clearly looking for some more stability in the midfield.

73: Anthony Martial is just the fifth French player to score in five consecutive premier League appearances, after Thierry Henry (x3), Eric Cantona, Nicolas Anelka and Olivier Giroud. 70: Next change for Jose Mourinho. Juan Mata, who scored that terrific free-kick against Juventus midweek, replaces Ander Herrera for the final 20 minutes. Alexis Sanchez also replaces Marcus Rashford. Looks like a slight change in formation too with Alexis moving up closer to Lukaku. 67: There were just 30 seconds between Romelu Lukaku coming on as a sub, and winning Manchester United’s penalty. 66: City trying to assert themsleves now with some possession. The fresh-legged Leroy Sane skips inside and tees up Fernandinho for the shot, but De Gea easily collects. 63: Riyad Mahrez is shaking his head as Pep Guardiola sends on Leroy Sane. Benjamin Mendy actually has a word with the winger before he leaves the field. 60: I should tidy that substitute up for you. Romelu Lukaku replaced Jesse Lingard about 30 seconds before winning that penalty. Not a bad substitution, Jose.

MANCHESTER CITY 2-1 MANCHESTER UNITED | MARTIAL (PEN) 57: Converted! Anthony Martial continues his fine goalscoring record by sending Ederson the wrong way from the penalty spot. All of a sudden, we have a game on our hands. PENALTY TO MANCHESTER UNITED 56: Crazy decision from Ederson, who has flown off his line and brought substitute Romelu Lukaku down inside the penalty area. It’s stonewall. Just so rash from the Brazilian international. 55: Blocked! Riyad Mahrez, whose decision making has been excellent today, slips Raheem Sterling in down the left but Victor Lindelof stays big to make the tackle. The English winger the goes through on goal with De Gea but Fernandinho's pass won't sit for him. 52: Such a devastating blow for United to concede that early. Any plan that Jose Mourinho will have discussed in the dressing room as probably gone out the window. 50: Jose Mourinho instantly turns to his substitutes and asks Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to start warming up. The Portuguese has a scowl on his face as he stands in the technical area.

MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 MANCHESTER UNITED | AGUERO 47: Sergio Aguero! The Argentine striker is still absolutely lethal and grabs his obligatory goal at the Etihad Stadium to double Manchester City’s advantage. He plays a neat one-two with Riyad Mahrez before hammering an angled effort that powers through David de Gea’s hands and into the net. Is De Gea at fault? Yes, shouldn’t be beaten at your near post like that. MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 MANCHESTER UNITED 45: And we’re back underway folks! Will Manchester United perform yet another signature comeback or can Manchester City put this out of sight before the final 20 minutes. No changes for either side.

Twitter round-up Michael: People can say Hazard this, De Bruyne that... But for me; I think Sterling is arguably the best player in the league so far this season Steve: Since everyone knows Manchester United don't start playing until the second half, I'd say one down at the break is tantamount to a lead. Amber: Fellaini, Matic and Herrera all cost United more than what City paid for David Silva. Just let that sink in for a minute. Yeah, It’s a shame football doesn’t work like that, Steve.

MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED HT: Sergio Aguero hammers an angled effort into the side-netting just before Anthony Taylor blows for the break. City have dominated the half but United have defended quite well and are still well in this. God that was a dull summary wasn’t. I’ll also be better in the second half. 44: Booked! Luke Shaw takes a booking for a bodycheck on Riyad Mahrez, who saw him coming. The Algeria international will take this from the right touchline… Fellaini heads it directly in the air twice before eventually hacking it behind for a corner. Handball? None of the City players appealed but it looked like the ball connected with Lindelof’s arm. Ball to hand I would say. 41: Corner to City. David Silva trots over to take it and Chris Smalling clears but it just keeps coming back. 38: City finding it difficult to unpick the United lock as we approach the break. The visitors have 10-men behind the ball and have stayed nice and compact. Hang in there and nick an equaliser late? I suspect so. 35: Frustration from Anthony Martial, who is released by Luke Shaw - but his first touch lets him down and Ederson gathers. Typical, the week I bring him into my fantasy football team…

33: Congratulations whoever had Bernardo Silva in the booking sweepstake. He’s just clumsily flown in to bring Marcus Rashford down and referee Anthony Taylor shows the yellow card. 30: Approaching the half-hour mark and there’s a significant drop in the tempo. Jose Mourinho will be quite happy to see Aymeric Laporte strike from distance. He’s nearly sent that into orbit. 27: Ashley Young battles his way past Benjamin Mendy before sweeping a dangerous cross through the ‘corridor of uncertainty.’ No red shirt anticipated the ball and Ederson is able to gather without pressure. 24: Ah, is that the tactical fouling we’ve been hearing about? Fernandinho spots a potential counter-attack and brings Jesse Lingard down before any damage can be done. Gary Neville in the Sky commentary box is confused as to why the midfielder isn’t booked - as am I. 22: Sergio Aguero collects the ball in the centre-circle but he’s got no support. The Argentine decides to go it alone but is eventually stopped by Marouane Fellaini, who almost seemed to engulf the poor boy. 19: Manchester City are quite content to keep possession in midfield. It’s almost a joke how well Pep Guardiola’s side are retaining the ball and making Manchester United chase shadows. 16: Just to keep you updated, Wolves have taken the lead against Arsenal. Ivan Cavaleiro with a 13th-minute strike after a horrendous error from granit Xhaka.

15: The visitors look for a swift response but a speculative free-kick is punched clear by Ederson and City can counter. Ander Herrera dithers in possession and Raheem Sterling nicks it off his toes. He drives forward before Herrera busts a gut to get back and make the block. 13: David Silva has scored in three consecutive home games in all competitions for the first time for Manchester City. The guy is timeless. MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED | D. SILVA 11: You can’t say that it hasn’t been coming… David Silva breaks the deadlock in the 11th minute with a beautifully worked goal from the Premier League champions. Bernardo Silva heads Raheem Sterling’s excellent cross back across goal, where Silva is waiting to tip-toe his way beyond a few last-gasp challenges and fire beyond David de Gea. We have lift off! 10: David Silva releases Raheem Sterling in behind Ashley Young, who’s got the unenviable task of playing out of position against the champions. The England winger can’t quite get the ball under control and Chris Smalling blocks.

7: What’s that saying about too many cooks? Some quick and sharp interplay down the left touchline sees David Silva spring the offside trap. He squares it but Aguero and Bernardo get in each others way. Fernandinho powers the loose ball wide. 5: Jose Mourinho’s side respond with a chance of their own, kind of. A free-kick is floated to the far post where Fellaini towers over Walker, but nods his header well wide of the target. Nice and spritely tempo. 3: Woof! First blood nearly goes Manchester City’s way as Bernardo Silva collects a loose ball before driving forward and striking it wide of David de Gea’s goal. MANCHESTER CITY 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED 1: The first Manchester derby of the season is underway. Standby for some serious fireworks - I can feel a feisty one coming!

Lest we forget 16:29: There will be a minute’s silence as we honour the 100th anniversary of World War One Armistice Day. Sir Bobby Charlton and Mike Summerbee emerge from the tunnel to a round of applause as they lay a wreath on the field. Fergie… 16:26: Nice to see Sir Alex Ferguson in the stands looking happy and healthy this afternoon. I think he’s enjoying this incredible atmosphere before kick off. Where’s Paul Pogba? 16:23: Sorry I’m late everyone. It’s been a ridiculously busy day at Express HQ and I’m on my third game of the afternoon. Smallest violin, right? Anyway, there’s an explanation as to why Manchester United are without Paul Pogba today - and Jose Mourinho has revealed all. “Paul is injured," he told Sky Sports. "He was injured during the game in Turin. He resisted. He felt that he could resist. He felt that it was such a crucial match for the team. “He made that sacrifice for us, and then it was impossible for him to recover for this match.”He is a very important player for us. People sometimes like to focus on the little problems in his performance, and we do the same. We try to make him the complete player. But his qualities are so, so good, and so important for the team at many different levels."

Pep versus Jose for Manchester pride 16:20: Guardiola's champions face another stern test of their unbeaten record when their near neighbours arrive at the Etihad Stadium. Free-scoring City are favourites for the game, but Mourinho's United proved last season that they can pull off a surprise success on enemy territory. While City have been winning in style - hitting 23 goals in their last six games in all competitions - United have been scraping narrow victories and relying on late goals. The long-standing rivalry between the two coaches should make for an intriguing tactical battle, as well as adding extra spice on the touchline. The starting XI... 16:15: No Paul Pogba in the squad this afternoon, Alexis Sanchez on the bench. Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Mendy, Fernandinho, Bernardo, Mahrez, D. Silva, Sterling, Aguero. Subs: Muric, Kompany, Delph, Gundogan, Sane, Foden, Jesus. Manchester United XI: De Gea, Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, Matic, Herrera, Fellaini, Lingard, Martial, Rashford. Subs: Romero, Jones, Darmian, Fred, Mata, Sanchez, Lukaku.
