Everything we learned from the September 2018 Nintendo Direct

Just How Super is the New Mario Party™ Game?

See some new modes in action

After massive earthquake shook Japan’s northernmost island Hokkaido, Nintendo delayed the latest Nintendo Direct until further notice. It didn’t take them too long to reschedule: The company bounced back on Sept. 13 with a pre-Tokyo Game Show presentation full of reveals.

While we had a few ideas on what we might get out of this latest batch of updates, there were still plenty of surprise announcements for both Switch and 3DS. Super Mario Bros., Luigi’s Mansion 3, the latest in the long-running Katamari series, with a handful of other games and peripheral news piling up out of the event. Also, Nintendo revealed a back catalogue of classic Final Fantasy titles — not just FF 12 but also 7, 9 and 10. There was also news on new hardware and updates to fan favorite games that should please anyone out there who’s invested in the immediate future of Nintendo.

And then there was that painful Animal Crossing tease. But it was only a tease.

For the full breakdown, and all the details on games new and updated, check out our full list of news stories below.

I'm kinda down on this Direct to be honest. I mean, it was what I was expecting. No major new announcements, well except maybe LM3, but plenty of ports and smaller projects for the pipeline. Other than LM3, which is not going to happen any time soon, there was no game though, I really cared about.

Maybe DxM, but that game is also still ways off, with the E3 demo having shown the framerate dipping close to single digits. That of course is completely unacceptable in an action game. I'm sure much of that will be worked out, but that is going to take time and I'm not sure, that it will be completely resolved, as the whole thing was really extraordinarly rough for an E3 demo of a supposed 2019 release. I hope it does, I really do, but I'm simply not sure.

Nintendo Online honestly struck me as a joke. I HATED how they almost praised the service for enabling online play in "supported titles" like Splatoon 2. That really stuck in my craw. It was silly and kinda tone-deaf. Also, making a big deal out of the cloud, something every other platform has been supporting for a long time, is equally silly. $60 for two wirless NES controllers? Well, Apple just called and they want their business plan back. Speaking of which, NES games? Really? I'm sorry, I might be in the minority here, but I do not care about 99% of the NES library. I don't care about 8-bit games period, with the exception of like a handful of titles. SNES games? N64 games? Now, that would be something.

Golden Eye and Wave Race 64 and Star Fox 64 with online multiplayer? Would I pay $20 a year for that? Hell to yes I would, I would even pay $10-15 a month for that luxury. That stuff doesn't scale though. $20 a year for a few dozen NES games (eventually) is just as unattractive as these things get.

Nintendo really went back to its old self with this one. And don't get me started about their insistence on the app (has been discussed to death already though). So yeah, to me, harsh as it sounds, Nintendo Online is cheap, and the features it offers follow suit on the price. It will serve it's core function, as it has previously done, just now with the added priviledge of a pay-wall. Congratz on that. The fact that this close to launch they could not even elaborate on the "special deals" part ... I don't want to comment on that, it just speaks volumes on its own.

@Frendo Did the Direct give any indication of SNES games I might have missed? (honest question) Because, quite frankly, I do not see this happening at all. The fact, that they are selling those $60 NES controllers tells me, that this is their offering - period. I'd love N64 and SNES games, that would make the service attractive to me for sure, but I strongly feel that at this point, this is just wishful thinking. I'm not saying that it could never happen, but I would be genuinely surprised if it were to happen during the (vanilla) Switch's lifetime.
