Westminster crash: Counter-terror police lead investigation - what we know so far


London (CNN) A car crashed into security barriers outside the UK's Houses of Parliament during rush hour Tuesday morning, injuring two people. The driver, a man in his late 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of terrorist offenses.

The man's car collided with several cyclists and pedestrians, before crashing into the barrier, shortly after 7:30 a.m., police said.

The crash is being treated as a terrorist incident and counter terror police are leading the investigation, police added.

The driver was alone in the car and no weapons were recovered at the scene. He remains in custody in a south London police station.

London Ambulance Service said the two people treated for injuries were not believed to be in a serious condition. Both were taken to hospital.

Armed police are on the scene at Westminster following an incident at 7.40am this morning.

Streets surrounding the area in central London have been cordoned off as emergency vehicles arrive.

Parliament Square, Millbank and Victoria Tower Gardens areas are affected as Westminster is placed on lockdown.

This is what we know so far:

:: The driver of the car, a man in his late 20s, was arrested at the scene by armed officers on suspicion of terrorist offences. He was wearing a black puffer jacket and led away in handcuffs. He is being held at a south London police station.

:: The Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism command is leading the investigation. It is being treated as a "terrorist incident".

:: The car "collided with a number of cyclists and pedestrians, before crashing into barriers outside the Houses of Parliament", Scotland Yard said.

:: There was no one else in the vehicle, and officers have not found any weapons so far.

:: Witnesses said the crash looked deliberate. The car is said to have been driven at speed, and to have lifted off the ground when it hit the barriers.

:: 7.37am: The time when the Met said a car was "in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament".

:: London Ambulance Service said it was called at 7.40am. It sent "three ambulance crews, responders in cars, and an incident response officer".

It added: "Two patients were treated at the scene and taken to hospital and a third patient with minor injuries was assessed at the scene."

At 0737hrs today, a car was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament. The male driver of the car was detained by officers at the scene. A number of pedestrians have been injured. :: The area remains in lockdown, with streets around Parliament Square, Millbank and Victoria Tower Gardens cordoned off. The whole of Whitehall is also shut to traffic, with the cordon extending all the way up to Trafalgar Square. Scotland Yard said road closures were likely to remain in place for some time.

:: Firearms officers and at least two police dogs were stationed outside parliament.

:: Westminster Tube station is closed while the incident is dealt with.

:: Witness Ewalina Ochab said: "I think it looked intentional - the car drove at speed and towards the barriers.

"I was walking on the other side [of the road]. I heard some noise and someone screamed. I turned around and I saw a silver car driving very fast close to the railings, maybe even on the pavement."

:: Another witness, Jason Williams, said: "I saw a car going at high speed towards Parliament.

"It hit a bollard. It looked deliberate. It didn't look like an accident. How do you do that by accident? It was a loud bang."

A man is being held by police on suspicion of terror offences after a car crashed into barriers outside the Houses of Parliament in central London.

At least two people were injured after the silver car struck pedestrians in Westminster shortly after 7.30am on Tuesday.

Parliament Square has been placed on lockdown while emergency services respond to the incident and Westminster Tube station has been closed.

Images and video footage showed armed police surrounding a silver vehicle at the scene before a man was led away from the scene.
