The Asian Games was declared open by Indonesia's President Joko Widodo late on Saturday during a colourful opening ceremony in Jakarta dominated by the joint march of North and South Korea. A burst of fireworks followed the announcement, marking the start of the two-week tournament to be held in Jakarta and Palembang in Sumatra. The ceremony stage -- with features of 120-metre length, 30-metre width and 26-metre height -- showcased a towering mountain as its background, accompanied by plants and flowers unique to Indonesia. Commonwealth Games gold medallist Neeraj Chopra was India's flag-bearer in the opening ceremony. The Indian sports ministry had cleared an 804-member Indian contingent, including 572 athletes, for the Asian Games . The sporting extravaganza will see around 10,000 athletes from 45 countries compete in 58 games.

The stage has been built manually by artists from Bandung and Jakarta and will witness around 4,000 dancers who will perform on dance choreographed by Denny Malik and Eko Supriyanto. The dancers are expected to perform "an energetic and elegant show" with the presence of an orchestra that will feature at least a hundred musicians with its two conductors Addie MS and Ronald Steven, who are well recognised amid Indonesian music culture. The main Gelora Bung Karno stadium will be transformed into a verdant mountain, organisers say, and Indonesian celebrity singer Anggun Cipta Sasmi will take to the stage.
Around 50,000 people are expected inside the stadium, Games organising committee INASGOC said Saturday, adding that tickets -- which range in price from to $50-$350 -- had sold out. Indonesian Gunawan Tri Wasisto, who works in finance, said tickets were costly but worth it.

Kehadiran RI-1 ini diawali dengan tayangan ketika Jokowi melangkah keluar dari Istana Bogor diikuti oleh para Paspampres. Dia kemudian menaiki mobil RI-1 dan menuju SUGBK.
Dia sempat melewati jembatan Semanggi, Jakarta dan terjebak macet. Tak kehabisan akal, sosok yang digambarkan sebagai Jokowi itu turun dari mobil dan menggunakan sepeda motor milik Paspampres.
Motor yang ditunggangginya bahkan melompati mobil-mobil untuk menembus kemacetan. Dia juga melewati jalanan yang sempit.
Paspampres lalu menyusul dan sempat terhenti di depan sekolah. Jokowi pun turun dari motornya untuk memberi jalan kepada rombongan anak sekolah berseragam Pramuka yang akan menyeberang. Seorang pelajar sempat terperangah ketika menyaksikan Jokowi membuka kaca helmnya.
Lepas dari kemacetan, Jokowi kemudian kembali dikawal oleh rombongan Paspampres yang menaiki sepeda motor. Diceritakan, Jokowi tiba di SUGBK tepat ketika acara pembukaan akan digera dilangsungkan. Jokowi pun langsung masuk ke stadion masih dengan tunggangannya sembari melambaikan tangan.
Diperlihatkan pula, sosok yang digambarkan sebagai Jokowi kemudian memarkir motornya dan kemudian masuk lift dengan pengawalan Paspampres menuju panggung upacara. Tepat ketika pintu lift terbuka, sosok asli Jokowi pun muncul di panggung utama dan mendapat sambutan meriah.
Jokowi langsung disambut Ketua Inasgoic Erick Thohir, Wapres Jusuf Kalla, Menpora Imam Nahrawi, serta Menko PMK Puan Maharani.
Usai menyalami para tamu lainnya, Jokowi kemudian duduk di sebelah Ibu Negara Iriana Jokowi yang sudah lebih dulu tiba di panggung utama. Namun, teriakan serta tepuk tangan dari penonton atas kehadiran Jokowi masih berlanjut.

Pembukaan Asian Games 2018 dipastikan bakal menjadi sorotan karena panggung berukuran raksasa akan hadir di tengah lapangan Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno (SUGBK).
Panggung dengan berat total 600 ton dan ukuran panjang 135 meter, lebar 30 meter, dan tinggi 26 meter merupakan salah satu panggung terbesar dan tertinggi yang pernah ada dalam upacara pembukaan acara sejenis.
Panggung itu merupakan karya 350 anak bangsa. Menjawab rasa penasaran dari masyarakat, upacara pembukaan Asian Games 2018 akan menampilkan konsep keindahan alam dan keragaman budaya asli Indonesia.

The creative segment is in full swing at the Gelora Bung Karno. The performances all signify the history and culture of Indonesia in some form or the other. The first segment signified water, showing the history of the early, sea-faring Indonesians. The seas then dissapear and the light baths the central stage of the stadium green as the segment starts. This was to signify Earth and the preservation of culture accross the country over the years.
