Morocco had the better of the game after Ronaldo's fourth minute goal, but they were unable to break down Fernando Santos' side and ultimately crashed out of the competition with the defeat.
Portugal have climbed to the top of Group B with the victory.

Just four minutes into Portugal’s clash with Morocco, the star forward had put his side in front.
Wrestling his way between two defenders, Ronaldo buried a diving header to earn Portugal an early 1-0 lead.
It was his fourth goal of the tournament — in just his second game.

It also proved to be the game’s deciding goal, with neither team able to find the back of the net again.
That said, Morocco fought back in the first half, having their fair share of possession and creating good chances.
They even had a couple of decent penalty shouts waved away.

But their best chance came in the 57th minute, when they were cruelly denied an equaliser by stellar goalkeeping.
Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio produced a moment of brilliance to deny Morocco’s Younes Belhanda with a stunning save, diving low and scooping the ball to safety.

Morocco would continue to pepper Patricio’s goal but could never find the decisive goal.
Ronaldo is is now the all-time leading scorer for any European national team. His 85th career goal for Portugal moves him ahead of Hungary great Ferenc Puskas, who finished his career with 84.

Cristiano Ronaldo followed up his opening game heroics at the World Cup with the only goal in a 1-0 win for Portugal against Morocco as the European champions edged closer to the last 16.
The Real Madrid star struck in the fourth minute in Moscow to surpass Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas as Europe’s all-time leading scorer with 85 international goals.
Victory sent Portugal top of Group B on four points ahead of Spain’s game against Iran in Kazan, as a second straight defeat for Morocco condemned the African nation to an early exit in their first World Cup appearance since 1998.
Morocco coach Herve Renard opted for a back four, with Manuel Da Costa and Nabil Dirar coming into the side, to provide added protection against the “absolutely exceptional” Ronaldo after his hat-trick against Spain.
But his plans were torn apart within minutes at the Luzhniki Stadium as Ronaldo wriggled free of the imposing Da Costa to bury an unstoppable header past a helpless Monir El Kajoui.

It was Ronaldo’s fourth goal of the tournament, more than his combined tally at three previous finals, and left him trailing just Iran’s Ali Daei (109) on the list of top international goalscorers.
The Real Madrid forward threatened a second soon after, swivelling on the edge of the area and scuffing just wide after a powerful run from left-back Raphael Guerreiro.
Mehdi Benatia forced a smart low save from Rui Patricio at a corner for Morocco, before Hakim Ziyach skipped his way into the Portugal area, his goal-bound effort blocked by an outstretched leg.
Joao Moutinho then nipped in ahead of Mbark Boussoufa to get a vital clearing touch in the six-yard box as Morocco consistently targeted the right side of the Portuguese defence.
A crude lunge from Benatia on Ronaldo left the Portugal skipper writhing around in pain, while Morocco felt aggrieved when Nordin Amrabat was hauled down by Guerreiro as he muscled his way into the area.
Khalid Boutaib was flattened by Jose Fonte in an aerial challenge that again had the Moroccans up in arms, with Renard warned for gesturing for the video assistant referee.

Morocco goalkeeper El Kajoui kept his side in the game when he stuck out a strong left palm to repel a Goncalo Guedes effort following Ronaldo’s lofted pass over the top.
Ronaldo blazed over from 15 yards after a quick free-kick caught Morocco out, Guedes’s miscued attempt rolling invitingly to the five-time world player of the year.
Morocco continued to carve out opportunities as Patricio clung on well to a curling Belhanda shot, and the Portugal keeper pulled off an even better save minutes later.
Another dangerous delivery from Ziyach was flicked on by Belhanda, with new Wolves signing Patricio flinging himself to his right to magnificently claw the ball to safety.

A further opening fell to Benatia, the Juventus defender neatly shifting the ball onto his left boot only to lash over the bar as Morocco’s frustrations mounted.
The lively Ziyach nipped past Fonte in the closing minutes but found Pepe standing in his way, with Benatia hammering over one final chance to seal Morocco’s fate.
Portugal will meet Iran in their final group game on June 25, with Morocco set to bow out after their match against Spain in Kaliningrad.

With the loss, Morocco was mathematically eliminated from the World Cup, though it will have one more game. It was a hard ending for a team that provided fans with a lot of attacking entertainment, but no goals in two games.
Andrew Das: Boy, that Ronaldo goal seems a long time ago, and Morocco surely will rue its chances. But Portugal must feel it is on its way through to the next round, and Morocco will have one game left — against Spain — to salvage something from this World Cup. Scoring a goal would help.
A lone Morroccan player is the last to leave the field. He is draped in a flag that he got from a fan in exchange for his jersey, and he’s weeping.

Ziyach takes a free kick from the right, which goes to Benatia. He can’t get his head on it, though, and the shot goes wide.
76’: Morocco Feeling the Pressure
Morocco is racing around the pitch, playing hard defense, passing nicely, getting some crosses and free kicks. They just haven’t been able to finish.
A loss in this game would eliminate them from the World Cup. They have yet to score a goal in two games.

An entertaining game. Underdogs are often in bad shape when they fall behind in matches like this. Morocco played about as well as you could ask. They just didn’t quite get a goal. Goof for Morocco: they took seven shots to Portugal’s five, and 50 percent of the possession. Portugal was forced into 17 clearances in the half.

Andrew Das: Morocco had some chances in the half, and Amrabat especially has been persistent trouble for Guerreiro on the right wing. But the Moroccans haven’t taken advantage of the chances they have created, and Ronaldo buried his really good one. And that, I guess, is why Real Madrid pays him all that money.

Morocco’s attacking style leaves them a wee bit open at the back, and Ronaldo finds Goncalo Guedes, who forces a one-handed save, then fluffs the rebound. Great save by Mohamedi Munir. That really should have been 2-0.
Andrew Das: Morocco needs a little composure here. They feel very aggrieved by a couple of calls, and they’ve lashed out a couple times. Benatia just got a yellow for persistent infringement — basically, a handful of fouls that added up to one yellow once he rolled Ronaldo at midfield — and they just lost Guedes and had to be bailed out by their goalkeeper. Going into halftime down by 1-0 is not great. Going in down by 2-0 would be worse.

Andrew Das: Both players were holding, Geiger tells a furious Herve Renard at the next stoppage, and the replays confirm. Either way, the contact happened outside the area, so it shouldn’t have been a penalty. Geiger explained as much to the Moroccan players, and then goes to the sideline to talk with Renard about confronting the fourth official.
“Both were holding,” one can discern from amateur lipreading. And he’s right. Guerreiro pulls up his shirt to show a nasty red wound from Boutaib’s hand.

24’: Portugal Looking to Regain Control
Long-range effort by Ziyach of Morocco was saved. Portugal is going to want to get control of the ball a bit more. The thing is, if teams get enough shots and enough chances, the ball eventually goes in. Morocco is getting a lot of chances right now.
Andrew Das: Ronaldo is strolling mostly, or walking in the first half. His economy of movement, and effort, is remarkable. Sometimes he’ll just stand still, watching for a bit, then jog a few steps. But he only runs when he has to run, and those are the moments when everyone edges forward on their seat a little.
20’: Morocco Keeps Shooting
Morocco, as you might expect, is throwing everything at Portugal and it’s working. Ziyech and Boussoufa got close-in shots that drew saves.

The chances are coming thick and fast! A header from Benatia of Morocco, the captain, is saved at the corner of the net. Both teams are playing an open and aggressive brand of soccer.
9’: Ronaldo Threatens Again
Nearly two for Ronaldo. He dribbled right, shot left (through a defender’s legs), but it went barely wide. Morocco is in deep trouble here.

That was fast. Portugal took a tricky short corner, and Moutinho quickly stepped up to send it into the box. Who should be there to head it in but that man Cristiano Ronaldo? Goal No. 4 for him at this World Cup.
Andrew Das: How do you lose Cristiano Ronaldo on a corner? I mean, c’mon Morocco. Somehow, Manuel Da Costa fell for a stutter step, turned his head, and got beat. Any player at the World Cup buries a free header from six yards. Ronaldo? He lives for them.

The Most Popular Man in the Stadium
The Morocco fans are booing every mention of Ronaldo on the stadium loudspeakers and every sight of him on the stadium video screens. They just showed him in the tunnel, and it was the loudest one yet. But the Morocco players themselves seem pleased to see him; hugs all around, including from a smiling Noureddine Amrabat, who plays in La Liga.

Having two stadiums in Moscow has made the city a bit of a World Cup hub, and the matches here attractive to anyone and everyone. Lots of Portugal and Morocco jerseys and flags outside today, obviously, but also more guys in fezes than you normally see at a soccer game. But it’s the variety of shirts that is really striking. Jerseys spotted outside the stadium from teams not playing include: Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Japan, Germany, Croatia, Australia, Mexico again, and again, Russia, Real Madrid, Leicester CIty (!!!!), F.C. Köln. And then there’s this guy, who may have shown up in his Brazil shirt just to take pictures with pretty girls.
