JOHOR BARU: Members of the media had to convince Tebrau PKR candidate Steven Choong to vote immediately after he considered returning several hours later to avoid the long queue outside his polling station.
Choong, 61, who arrived at 8.50am with his wife Chua Yong Hiang, 63, was surprised to see the more than 300m long queue at Sabilul Muhtadin Religious School in Taman Puteri Wangsa here, and considered returning at about noon in the hopes that the crowd would have reduced by then.
But members of the media urged the parliamentary candidate to cast his vote earlier because they were on a tight deadline and could not wait for him to cast his vote later.
After eventually casting his vote at 10am, Choong said he was encouraged to see the high voter turnout so early in the day.
“I am very happy to see so many people here since early morning to cast their votes despite the inconvenience of having to wait in line.
“I am also glad to see many young voters. It shows that they too are eager to help shape the future of this country,” he said.
Choong is in a three-cornered fight against Dr Hou Kok Chung from MCA and incumbent Abdullah Husin from PAS for the Tebrau parliamentary that has a total of 123,033 voters.

KUALA LUMPUR: Life-long DAP member Amran Ahmad Nor is urging Malaysians to vote for any party, but PKR, tomorrow.
He said a vote for PKR was a vote for DAP and added that PKR’s prime ministerial candidate Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was only a puppet.
He said DAP would hold the majority of the parliamentary seats and their members would dominate five major ministries after sacrificing the post of prime minister and deputy prime minister to the Malays.
He told PKR supporters that Dr Mahathir would never hand over the prime ministerial position to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim so long as his son “Boboi” (Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir) was here to continue his legacy.
“Do not allow yourself to be manipulated and deceived by DAP’s propaganda,” he said in a statement today.
“Remember, our people will be neglected, insulted and tortured every day because voting for PKR will allow Pakatan Harapan to be controlled by DAP to govern Malaysia.”
Amran, who is the son of the late DAP national vice-chairman Ahmad Nor, said the people wanted a more progressive and better Malaysia, but not at the expense of the Malays.
He said political revenge, hate, religion and racism were at the core of Pakatan Harapan.
Amran said 90 per cent of DAP candidates were Christians and their religious agenda would be given priority if they came to power.
“What will happen to our religion (Islam)? I urge Malaysians not to take this risk. You will regret it when your race is marginalised, the prices of goods do not fall but go up instead and the country is always in chaos,” he added.
“My final words, please vote for any party other than PKR tomorrow because one vote for PKR means you are giving Malaysia to DAP.”
Dr Mahathir is PKR’s candidate for the Langkawi parliamentary constituency, while his son Mukhriz is contesting in Jerlun. Both seats are in Kedah.
Meanwhile, Anwar is serving out his last few days in Sungai Buloh prison until his release date next month.
