As Kohli said, the results in the last week or so have kept the table open. While SRH and CSK have already made it through, things are heating up for the other two positions. RCB have done their bit to stay alive while KXIP have just been throwing away the good job they did in the first half of the tournament. KKR vs RR tomorrow is another crucial encounter. Join us for that clash.

Umesh Yadav, is the Man of the match.

Umesh has now won five Man of the Match awards against KXIP - only Yusuf Pathan has won as many against an opponent in IPL (five vs DC). #KXIPvRCB #IPL2018 — Deepu Narayanan (@deeputalks) May 14, 2018

Here's what the captains had to say:

Virat Kohli: "The last one week has been really crazy for us. At one stage, we thought we were down and out. But the way other games have gone, the points table opened up. Couldn't have asked for a more clinical performance. No negatives to point out today. Perfect game for us. Kings thought that we would be intimidated by their openers on this small field but the way our bowlers started, they knew that they couldn't make any mistakes. Umesh was brilliant, taking those two big wickets in the same over. We kept picking wickets throughout and that was crucial. Very important because that's been the trend at this ground and we knew that they will try extra with their mystery spinner not playing. As I said, it was a perfect day right from the toss. We want to take responsibility as batsmen, the toss may not go well everytime. One (game) is at home and we have the right momentum. We are in the nothing-to-lose zone and it will work well for us. Other teams will be wary of a team with such mindset. We still got three days till the next game, we just want to enjoy the break till then."

Ravichandran Ashwin: "Really disappointing. Wasn't at all a professional effort from us. That has been the story for us. It's been the bowlers who have done it right and got the points for us. The batsmen have struggled more often than not. Anyways, we need to chin up and move forward. Need to try and make sure to lift ourselves. We need to stay positive and move forward. It was very simple. We have never got to 20 overs with 3 down or 4 down so far in the tournament. That's what we wanted to achieve but the wheels came off at the wrong time for us. We lost by a big margin and our net run rate has come down. We need to go to Mumbai and try them to bed, then we go to Pune. Most of these guys have played for a long time now. We have a reasonable bowling attack that has fired for us. The internationals need to step up and live up to their expectations."

Thumping win for RCB:

They do it with all 10 wickets in hand and 11.5 overs to spare, which gives a massive boost to their NRR. Kohli finishes with an unbeaten 48 while Parthiv played his part with 40 not out. RCB's NRR has gone into the positive now at +0.22, although they are still below MI at present. This is the first time that RCB have managed to win back to back games since winning five in a trot leading to the 2016 finals, informs Deepu.

Meanwhile, the massive loss has meant that KXIP have now slipped out of the top four, down to fifth with a NRR of -0.52. KXIP this season - First six matches: W L W W W W; Next six matches: L L W L L L.

Partnership crosses fifty:

Parthiv continues to tee away against anything in his arc, crunching those drives through the off side and the pulls behind square. The fifty partnership is up in the fifth over. Virat Kohli ends the powerplay with a four and a six off Tye as RCB are finishing this quickly, ending up with 66 in the first six. This is the highest PP score for RCB this season, adds Deepu. They made 64 against RR in Bengaluru.

Review lost:

R Ashwin decided to go upstairs straightaway after Tye rapped Kohli on the pads and the onfield umpire ruled in favour of the RCB captain. Replays reveal that the call was right as the ball was sliding down.

Kohli gets going:

An authoritative over cow corner for a six is followed by a pull wide of mid-on and a slap over point for two fours. And another reprieve for Kohli, as Finch puts down the RCB captain at mid-off. Just not the day for KXIP. RCB are racing away, having moved to 36 for 0 after three.

Missed opportunity:

While Parthiv has scored a flurry of boundaries in the first two overs, KXIP miss an opportunity to send back Kohli. Ashwin, fielding at mid-on, misses a direct hit at the non-striker's end.

RCB need to win all three games, including this one, keep an eye on NRR and pray hard for other results to help them out... At least they can control two variables tonight. #IPL2018 #KXIPvRCB — Chetan Narula (@chetannarula) May 14, 2018

Dismal performance:

36 runs for the opening wicket but once that ended, it was a procession of wickets. The lack of application from the KXIP batsman was a disaster in the making and so it proved as they finish with 88. This the first time that a team has failed to go past 100 in this IPL while batting first. Three run outs, including the final one, sums up KXIP's dismal performance. RCB will be looking to chase this down quickly and boost their NRR.

More numbers from Deepu:

Lowest totals for KXIP in IPL: 73 vs RPS, Pune, 2017; 87 vs RCB, Indore, 2018 *; 88 vs RCB, Bengaluru, 2015; 92 vs CSK, Durban, 2009.

Lowest totals vs RCB in IPL: 58 RR, Cape Town, 2009; 82 DC, Mumbai, 2010; 88 KXIP, Indore, 2018*; 88 KXIP, Bengaluru, 2015; 92 RR, Bengaluru, 2010.

More wickets:

After being pulled for a six by Finch off his first ball, Moeen keeps his length back again and the batsman slog-sweeps it straight to Kohli. The sorry state of affairs for KXIP is compounded by R Ashwin's run out, and he's soon followed by Tye, who edges to the 'keeper to give Umesh his third wicket. Mohit is run out a short while later, leaving KXIP at 84 for 9. Can KXIP reach 100?

Umesh now have 26 wickets vs KXIP - equalling Narine for the most wickets against them in IPL, informs Deepu.

Umesh Yadav three+ wkt hauls vs KXIP in IPL:

4/33 Kolkata, 2017

3/13 Kolkata, 2014

3/19 Dharamshala, 2012

3/21 Delhi, 2012

3/23 Bengaluru, 2018

3/23 Indore, 2018

3/33 Pune, 2015

No other bowler has more than five such hauls against an opponent.#KXIPvKKR #IPL2018 — Deepu Narayanan (@deeputalks) May 14, 2018

Agarwal's struggles continue:

Mayank Agarwal becomes the next to depart, leaving KXIP struggling at 61 for 5 in the 9th over. The on-field umpires sought the third umpire's help after they heard some noise when the ball went down the leg-side to the 'keeper's hands. Replays confirm there is some bat involved and Agarwal has to depart for 2. A wicket for de Grandhomme.

Despair:

Our statsman, Deepu Narayanan, with some numbers: 19th successive innings since Mayank went past 30. Among specialist batsmen, only Abhishek Nayar had a longer wretched run - 30 innings between 2009 and 2014.

Hope:

This is only the second time in this year's #IPL that a team has lost five wickets in the first nine overs of the innings.

The previous occasion was in match 23 when @SunRisers were 71-5. They went on to post 118 and successfully defended it against @mipaltan#KXIPvRCB — The Cricket Prof. (@CricProf) May 14, 2018

Four down:

Stoinis is the latest to depart, leaving KXIP in further trouble. The batsman was late to respond to a yorker from Yuzvendra Chahal and is bowled for 2. Mayank Agarwal joins Finch at the crease now. can they stabilise the innings?

Karun departs:

Siraj strikes in his first over as Karun departs after scoring just 1. Looking to guide one behind, the batsman edges the ball to Kohli at slip. More like catching practice. At the end of powerplay KXIP are 47 for 3. Aaron Finch and Marcus Stoinis have their work cut out.

Openers fall in quick succession:

A short, slower ball from Umesh is dispatched for a six by Rahul. However, the bowler has the last laugh as he sends down another short ball which Rahul pulls straight to Colin de Grandhomme to depart for 21 off 15. Gayle departs soon after, miscuing a pull to Mohammad Siraj. A stern test now KXIP's fragile middle order.

Gayle gets into the act:

The left-hander finally gets something in his swinging arc and he makes Southee pay, scoring three fours off the bowler in the fourth over.

Dropped:

Umesh Yadav finds the outside edge of Chris Gayle's bat in the opening over, only to be put down by Parthiv Patel. A fine over from Yadav, who conceded only one run, which allowed KL Rahul to get off the mark. A quiet over from Tim Southee but he doesn't finish it off well, bowling a short delivery which Rahul pulls away for the first six of the match. Gayle, meanwhile, finally gets off the mark, with a single off the seventh delivery he faced and Rahul continues to take toll of the short deliveries. However, he too gets a lucky break as AB puts in a superb effort at mid-off but the ball just about brushed his fingers before landing on the ground. Umesh the unlucky bowler again.

We can see a few #MI fans supporting #RCB today. Just see to it that this extra support doesn't give them an extra boost as far as the NRR is concerned. #KXIPvRCB — North Stand-Wankhede (@NorthStandGang) May 14, 2018

Toss and teams:

Virat Kohli wins the toss and decides to field. RCB are unchanged while KXIP bring in Marcus Stoinis for an injured Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Kings XI Punjab (Playing XI): Lokesh Rahul(w), Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair, Aaron Finch, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin(c), Andrew Tye, Ankit Rajpoot, Mohit Sharma

Royal Challengers Bangalore (Playing XI): Parthiv Patel(w), Moeen Ali, Virat Kohli(c), AB de Villiers, Mandeep Singh, Sarfaraz Khan, Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal

If @RCBTweets lose to @lionsdenkxip today, they are knocked out of #IPL2018

Then the max RCB can finish will be 12.

KXIP will move to 14 points after today's win & either of KKR or RR will also reach at least 14 points. (SRH is on 18 & CSK on 16)#KXIPvRCB — Deepu Narayanan (@deeputalks) May 14, 2018

Build-up

Hello and welcome to the Live Blog of the 48th match of IPL 2018, featuring hosts Kings XI Punjab against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. Five victories in their first six games but only one in the five matches after that - KXIP have had contrasting fortunes in this IPL. While they are still in the top half of the points table, currently placed third, they might have to tussle with other teams for a position in the play-offs if their poor run continues. The main reason for that has been KXIP's middle order woes and their over reliance on the opening pair of KL Rahul and Chris Gayle. Their bowling, too, has started to show some cracks in the recent games and the time is ripe for them to buck the slide.

KXIP's opponents for today, Royal Challengers Bangalore, have cut a sorry figure despite a power-packed squad. They are in danger of being knocked out of competition - a loss would mean their play-offs hopes will come to an end today. Can RCB fight back like cornered tigers? A good batting performance in the previous game, with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers both scoring fifties for the first time in this IPL, will give them a lot of confidence.

But RCB are up against a batting order that has Rahul, who has hardly put a step wrong, and a dangerous Gayle, who has been kept quiet in the last few matches and all that bottled up energy might just find the release against RCB, a franchise that had decided to let him go. While we wait for the outcome of the toss and the elevens, in what is expected to be another high scoring game, here's the detailed preview.
