PETALING JAYA: Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos' (pic) legal team is urging him to present himself to the police.
"On May 25, while we (the legal team) were assisting the bail process for Datuk Seri Jamal over charges which were read to him at the hospital in the morning, we realised that he had left the ward before it was completed.
"We failed to locate him to complete the process yesterday (May 25) afternoon," said his lawyer Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin in a statement on Saturday (May 26).
Mohd Imran added that he was brought to the Ampang Jaya police headquarters to assist the police in locating and completing the bail process.
"After nearly 10 hours, we were then allowed to leave. I urge all to help us and the police to locate him in order to complete the process.
"I believe that there might be some 'miscommunication' between us and him about the process as this is the first time he has been charged outside the courts.
"I also believe that there was no intention to commit any crime, including running away from custody. I worry that he might have been under some trauma or felt pressured as this is a new situation for him," he added.
The lawyer also apologised to the police, courts and the hospital over the incident.
He also added that there was no need for the police to arrest him.
"I believe the police will provide the assistance and help needed without the need of any arrest. It is urged that Datuk Seri Jamal contact us, his legal team or present himself straight to the Ampang Jaya police station," he said.
The Red Shirts leader was under police remand at the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital's premium ward, where he was undergoing treatment for back pain, when he escaped from police custody on May 25.
Jamal, 48, was charged earlier that day under Section 290 of the Penal Code with breaking bottles of alcohol in public to protest the Better Beer Festival 2017.
The offence carries a fine of RM400.
According to the charge sheet, Jamal is said to have broken a number of alcohol bottles using a hammer, causing danger and public distress.
He is said to have committed the offence at the exit gate of Pos (1) Darul Ehsan State Government Secretaries building (Bangunan SUK Darul Ehsan) at 10.15am on Oct 5, 2017.
He pleaded not guilty in the premium ward in front of magistrate Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin.
The court granted bail of RM3,000 in one surety and set June 8 for mention at the Shah Alam magistrate's court.
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmat said: "However, before the bail was processed, he went missing."
On Tuesday (May 22), Jamal was arrested at about 1.15pm at the hospital over investigations into a case under Section 34 of the Firearms Act 1960.

The controversial political figure was under police remand at the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital's premium ward after he was charged there with three offences on Friday.
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmat said bail was set for RM3,000 for each offence.
"However, before the bail was processed, he went missing," SAC Fadzil said when contacted.
A source said that Jamal was discovered missing by Shah Alam Court assistant registrar Rahasbiah Abd Rahman around 5.30pm, just as she was about to grant him bail.
Police have launched a manhunt called Ops Tutup to find him.
Jamal, 48, was charged with committing public nuisance by breaking bottles containing alcoholic drinks with a hammer and causing disaster, danger and public nuisance in front of an exit gate of the Selangor State Secretariat building at 10.15am on Oct 5.
He was accused under Section 290 of the Penal Code, which carries a fine of up to RM400 if convicted. He claimed trial.
His lawyer Mohd Nasir Yusof asked for RM2,000 bail while Deputy Public Prosecutor Megat Mahathir Megat Tharif Afendi offered bail of RM4,000.
The magistrate then set bail at RM3,000 pending mention on June 8 at the Shah Alam magistrate's court.
Jamal had smashed the bottles in front of the building as a symbol in protest of a beer festival.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian police are looking for the controversial divisional leader of former ruling party UMNO, Jamal Yunos, after he went missing from hospital on Friday (May 25).
He had earlier been charged with causing public nuisance by smashing beer bottles in front of the Selangor government offices in October last year, in protest against a beer festival. He also faces two other charges for trespassing.

The public nuisance charge carries a maximum RM400 (US$100) fine if convicted. The house-trespassing charges, however, carry a maximum three-year jail term and up to RM5,000 fine per conviction.
A source familiar with the matter said that the head of the nationalist "Red Shirts" movement has been missing from the hospital where he was undergoing treatment since about 3pm, after he was charged.

Jamal was still in police custody at that time, as the authorities were processing bail documents when he went missing. Bail was set at RM3,000 for each of the three charges.

Jamal was first arrested in connection with a firearms investigation on Tuesday. He checked himself into hospital for back pain after he was released.
Jamal is a household name in Malaysian politics, first as the leader of the "pro-Malay rights" movement, the Red Shirts, and also for his antics, which include showing up at the Selangor administrative offices in a towel to make a point about water cuts.
His fellow party member and state assemblyman, lawyer Imran Tamrin, said he and other friends were taken to Ampang Jaya police station at around 5pm. They were allowed to leave after 10 hours of trying and failing to contact Jamal.
In a statement issued on Saturday morning, Mr Imran said he believed there may have been some "miscommunication" and Jamal thought the bail process was complete, as this was the first time he was charged outside a court.
However, he appealed for friends to help locate Jamal and to Jamal himself to come forward.

It was understood his absence was noticed at 5.30pm when the Shah Alam deputy court registrar arrived at the hospital.
Jamal had been arrested and then placed under remand recently for allegedly displaying a firearm in pictures that had gone viral on social media websites.
Earlier today, he was charged with being a public nuisance for an Oct 5 protest in front of the Selangor State Secretariat building where he smashed crates of beer with a sledgehammer.
He was charged at the hospital where he had been warded under police watch after complaining of back pains.
However, when the deputy registrar arrived for documentation procedures, Jamal was nowhere to be seen, though his lawyer and bailer were there.
Jamal’s lawyer claimed his client had been missing since 3pm, after his case was heard by magistrate Raja Noor Dilla Raja Mahyaldin and he was allowed bail of RM3,000.
Following his disappearance, police set up roadblocks around the Ampang area.
Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmat, when contacted, confirmed that police were now looking for Jamal.
“While the court documentation process was still taking place, Jamal went missing. We will look for him and contact him again to complete the documentation for bail,” he said.
The protest at the Selangor secretariat building was to protest the then-controversial Better Beer Festival 2017.
Members of the press were not allowed from entering the ward where the half-hour proceeding took place.
Jamal was charged under Section 290 of the Penal Code and is facing a RM400 fine if convicted.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Megat Mahathir Megat Afendi prosecuted while Jamal was represented by lawyer Mohd Nasir Yusof.
The magistrate set bail at RM3,000 and set June 9 for case mention at the Shah Alam magistrate's court.
