AMPANG: Sungai Besar Umno Division chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos has claimed trial to committing public nuisance by smashing bottles of alcoholic drinks in front of the Selangor State Secretariat building in Shah Alam last year.
Jamal was charged at the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital's premium ward before Shah Alam court magistrate Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin who was accompanied by an interpreter and an investigating officer.
The charge was read out at 10.45am on Friday (May 25).
Reporters and photographers were not allowed to enter the ward during the proceedings.
Jamal, 48, was charged with committing public nuisance by breaking bottles containing alcoholic drinks with a hammer and causing disaster, danger and public nuisance in front of an exit gate of the building at 10.15am on Oct 5.
He was accused under Section 290 of the Penal Code, which carries a fine of up to RM400 if convicted.
Jamal's lawyer Mohd Nasir Yusof later said that he has asked for RM2,000 bail while Deputy Public Prosecutor Megat Mahathir Megat Tharif Afendi offered bail of RM4,000.
The magistrate then set bail at RM3,000 pending mention on June 8 at the Shah Alam magistrate's court.
Jamal had smashed the bottles in front of the building as a symbol in protest of a beer festival.

The controversial political figure was under police remand at the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital's premium ward after he was charged there with three offences on Friday.
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmat said bail was set for RM3,000 for each offence.
"However, before the bail was processed, he went missing," SAC Fadzil said when contacted.
A source said that Jamal was discovered missing by Shah Alam Court assistant registrar Rahasbiah Abd Rahman around 5.30pm, just as she was about to grant him bail.
Police have launched a manhunt called Ops Tutup to find him.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian police are looking for the controversial divisional leader of former ruling party UMNO, Jamal Yunos, after he went missing from hospital.
He had earlier been charged for causing public nuisance by smashing beer bottles in front of the Selangor government offices in October last year. Apart from the charge for public nuisance, he also faces two other charges for trespassing.

A source familiar with the matter said on Friday (May 25) that the head of the nationalist "Red Shirts" movement has been missing from the hospital where he was undergoing treatment since about 3pm, after he was charged.

Jamal is still considered to have been in police custody at that time, as the authorities were processing bail documents when he went missing. Bail was set at RM3,000 for each of the three charges.
Jamal was first arrested in connection with a firearms investigation on Tuesday. He checked himself into hospital for back pain after he was released.
Jamal is a household name in Malaysian politics, first as the leader of the "pro-Malay rights" movement, the Red Shirts, and also for his antics, which include showing up at the Selangor administrative offices in a towel to make a point about water cuts.

Channel NewsAsia has been informed that his associate and fellow party member, lawyer Imran Tamrin, was detained to help track Jamal down.
Imran confirmed he was at a police station "to assist and facilitate the investigation".
He told Channel NewsAsia that as of 10.40pm, the police did not know where Jamal was.
