1. "Started From the Bottom"
It's still insane to think that there has ever been a Drake song that hasn't been No. 1 in the country at some point. Yet, somehow—as pervasive as it became—"Started From the Bottom" was never a No. 1 song. What's even more surprising is Drake's first No. 1 track as lead artist on Billboard's Hot 100 wasn't until "One Dance" in 2016. Think about that. He was releasing absolute bangers like "Started From the Bottom" for years and still hadn't reached ultimate commercial acclaim. But, like everything Drake, the song took on a life of its own, becoming yet another anthem of success that could be played for drunk frat bros at clubs, at weddings, NBA championships, and still end up at the top of every 2013 year-end list. It's proof that Drake can make a hit for literally everyone—one that has lasting appeal beyond the fleeting nature of charts.
About “Nice For What”
“Nice For What” is the third single to be released from Drake’s 2018 album that has yet to be named.
Throughout the song, Drake speaks about the life women live in the digital age. They’re always looking to gain a following and live in the light, but that also comes with some resistance and hate. Despite what they go through, Drake shows that he understands and appreciates the hustle.
It was first teased by Lauryn Hill’s son, Joshua Marley on social media in early March of 2018 under the name “Showin' Off.”
On Thursday night, while making an appearance at OVO signees Majid Jordan’s show, Drake announced a new single would be released within the next 24 hours.
“The reason I’m here tonight is because I’m back in the city finishing my album,” he explained to the audience. “I’ve got a new single dropping tomorrow night too, just in case you got some free time.”
He not only delivered on the promise of a single within 24 hours, he also released accompanying music video for “Nice For What,” a Murda Beatz production featuring a sample of Lauryn Hill’s “Ex Factor.” The video features cameos from Issa Rae, Misty Copeland, Rashida Jones, Tracee Ellis Ross, Tiffany Hadish and more.
“Maybe getting back to my regular life will humble me, I’ll be back 2018 to give you the summary,” Drake rapped on the final bars of More Life. Apparently, meant every word.
Since the beginning of 2018, Drake has dominated charts, playlists and radio airwaves. “God’s Plan,” one half of the Scary Hours EP he released in January, has already topped Billboard’s Hot 100 charts. Its accompanying video, in which Drake gives nearly $1 million away to students and families in need, has racked up over 340 million views since its arrival in February.
But chart domination doesn’t seem to enough to satisfy the Toronto rapper. In 2018, he tied with Eminem on the FORBES Five list, bringing in $100 million the year prior thanks to touring and an equity stake in Virginia Black whiskey.
Though Drake hasn’t announced a date for the album, one can hope he’ll make good on his promise before the day's end.
