Boat Race 2018, Oxford vs Cambridge: live updates

The Oxford men's crew have been through all sorts of upheaval and late personnel changes in recent weeks. Rachel Quarrell has all the details on the controversial decision to ditch Joshua Bugajski at the last minute in favour of Benedict Aldous.

Here's a snippet:

Oxford University’s Boat Race chief coach on Thursday admitted the controversial decision to substitute one of their senior rowers days before this year’s contest followed disagreements within the camp.

Sean Bowden confirmed that the replacement of Joshua Bugajski by Benedict Aldous from the reserve crew Isis was not solely due to the illness which disrupted the 27-year-old Blue’s preparations.

“I think it’d be fair to say that Josh being a more experienced guy, quite a strong character, yes we would have had certain times when we would have found ourselves in disagreement over some things,” said Bowden.

“I’ve never been through a Boat Race season without disagreements and healthy discussion is essential to bring a team together. Sometimes that can be more prolonged and disruptive than you’d like it to be, other times crews that are too malleable are not very good either.”

THE BOAT RACE

Oxford and Cambridge go oar-to-oar in the annual Boat Race along the River Thames.

The Light Blues of Cambridge are seeking revenge for their length and a quarter defeat last year in the men's race, while Cambridge are the defending women's champions.

Oxford are still aiming to chase down their bitter rivals in the all-time stake though, with the Dark Blues down 80-82 since the maiden race in 1829.

The women's race is set to go at 16:31pm, with the men doing battle an hour later.
