BBC Weather forecast: 'MORE snow this weekend' for the UK - THIS is where it will fall

Carol Kirkwood, who presented the BBC Breakfast weather report this morning, told viewers there would be rain and hill snow in the north. She said: “What we have is some rain, sleet and also some snow pushing northwards across northern England and Scotland. “That will eventually become confined to the hills of Scotland, where today we will see some significant snowfall.” With temperatures continuing to slowly increase snow will be restricted to the high grounds in Scotland.

As a result commuters hit by the heavy snowfall from last week will see it ease off throughout the day. Today, rain is predicted to push its way across the northern part of the UK, bringing with it some snow for parts of Britain. Scotland will be hit the hardest, although it will mostly be in the hills. While in the south there could be a few mist and fog patches. There could also be some frost this morning, particularly in the countryside where it could be slippery.

Meanwhile snow could cause problems for an area of Scotland due to the heavy flow of snow showers. Snow could reach between five to 10 centimetres in the hills. Whereas, in the east coast of Scotland rain is expected. The rain in the east will most probably cause some issues as it is likely to be heavy, therefore it will add to the fore of the snow that’s already on the ground. Elsewhere, there will be a few showers across England and Wales, but besides that it is going to be a largely dry day. Temperatures in the south range between eight and 12 degrees, with London predicted to have the warmest weather.

BBC Weather has predicted more snow for some parts of the country as a warm weather system collides with cold air in the north. Weather forecaster Louise Lear claimed that moving into Friday the UK will see “a change”, but only the north is likely to see snowfall. She said: “As we move out of Wednesday into Thursday we will start to see this area of low pressure threatening into the southwest and still under the influence of low pressure into the north. Which means that the showers are never too far away and it’s still pretty cold here so the showers will be rain, sleet and snow with any elevation so still quite a wintery flavour. “Elsewhere quite a quiet story on Thursday, dry with some sunshine with a little bit of rain moving through the channel Isles.

“As we move out of Thursday into Friday we will start to notice a change. “That area of low pressure is likely to squeeze up from the southwest and bring a spell of wet weather and it is going to stay with us as we go into the weekend. “But milder down to the south and it looks like that mild air will follow the flow gradually pushing into that cold air, however where that frontal system will tend to sit, it could mean we could see more snow as we move into the weekend. But it is likely to only be for the north and only for a time turning milder behind and hopefully some sunny spells.” The threat of more wintery weather comes as the UK is bracing for a monster Atlantic storm which could hit the country this weekend.

The weather system is expected to bring more freezing air across the nation meaning a further risk of more snow and ice and winds of up to 60mph. Meteorologist Martin Bowles said England and Wales will enjoy a calm run up to the weekend although Scotland will stay cold and snowy. He said: “We think there is going to be a low-pressure system coming in from the south west from Friday to Saturday. This will cause some wet and windy weather and we are looking at gales and a lot of rain in parts of the country. “It will bring some cold air back into Scotland, and this is where some talk of the cold returning could be coming from, and there is quite likely to be further amounts of snow. Ahead of the weekend there could be some further problems with snow in Scotland, elsewhere it will be milder and slightly unsettled.”

Could Wednesday's nor'easter unleash 2 feet of snow on Massachusetts? Newly released weather maps have dropped a load of fresh information on the upcoming storm, including rapidly increasing snow forecast totals that are beginning to get out of control.

The National Weather Service on Tuesday morning released a new snow total map that increases the high-end totals in parts of northern Mass. to 18-24 inches while moving the rain/snow line farther east, meaning heavier snow totals in parts of Eastern Mass. Communities north and west of Boston could now be getting up to 18 inches, while the Boston area itself is still looking at 6-8 inches.

Areas south of Boston, many of which make up the more than 20,000 still without power from the last storm, are expected to get primarily rain. See the new snow total map below.

"The big problem is that the storm this week is coming so soon after the destructive storm from last Friday," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski. "It will disrupt cleanup and restoration operations and is likely to cause a new but less extreme round of travel delays, power outages and damage from falling trees."

Where will it rain, snow?

The rain/snow line may seem like something you want to be to the east of, but that's where the heavy, wet snow will be. That means an increased likelihood of power outages as the precipitation weighs down on tree limbs and power lines.

This morning's maps show the rain/snow line has moved east. Snow totals in the pink areas below are likely to fluctuate depending on the temperature.

When will this happen?

The NWS said this morning to expect precipitation in much of Massachusetts by about noon Wednesday, making its way to the coast by 1 p.m., and heading out to the Cape by 2. By the Wednesday evening commute, up to 2-3 inches of snow per hour could be falling.

Anything else to know?

The wind talk is taking a backseat to the snow totals, but you can still expect gusts between 30-50 miles per hour to sweep across the state Wednesday. The strongest totals will be near the coast.

Flooding is another major concern. Coastal towns which haven't yet dried out can expect another round, but even some inland communities have to battle floods.

Don't be out on the water. Forecasters are expecting very hazardous ocean conditions.
