Namewee arrested over controversial CNY video


PETALING JAYA, Malaysia: Rapper Namewee has been remanded by the police over his controversial Chinese New Year video, according to the Star.

Last week, the Malaysian rapper uploaded a video clip for Chinese New Year titled Like A Dog, featuring a group of people wearing dog masks. It allegedly features vulgar dance moves near the Putra Perdana Building which houses the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya.

A post published on Thursday (Feb 22) on the rapper's Facebook page confirmed that Namewee had been remanded for further investigations.

"Namewee has been officially arrested. We will continue to cooperate with police for investigation. Thanks for your continuous support. Let's pray and hope that Namewee will be released tomorrow," read the post.

Earlier on Thursday, the rapper published another post on his Facebook page, saying that he was at the police headquarters in Bukit Aman.

"I'm not afraid because I believe there is justice in Malaysia.

"I will not bow to the media," said the rapper, as he also thanked those who have supported him.

The Malaysian authorities had opened up "investigation papers" on the rapper's video on Sunday, said Malaysia's Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun, according to the Star.

The police believed that the video was offensive to the feelings and "sensitivities of the multi-racial community" in Malaysia.

The case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, said the Star.




KUALA LUMPUR: Controversial rapper Namewee, was arrested at the Federal Police Headquarters, here today after police recorded his statement over a music video entitled 'Like a Dog' which was deemed insensitive.

Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd confirmed the arrest of the rapper, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, 34.

He said Namewee was arrested at 2.45pm after several police reports were lodged against him over his music video that he produced for Chinese New Year contained elements which could possibly create racial disharmony in the country.

"We acted based on four reports which had been lodged against Namewee citing elements of insensitivity towards religion, which could spark racial tension living in a multiracial country, like Malaysia," he said in a statement.

Wan Ahmad Najmuddin said Namawee had been detained to facilitate investigations under Section 298 A of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.

On Feb 18, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the police had opened up investigation papers on Namewee with regard to his video clip.

Meanwhile, Namawee through his Facebook account earlier posted that he had been arrested and would be released tomorrow.

"Namewee has been officially arrested. We will continue to cooperate with police for investigation. Thanks for your continuous support. Let's pray and hope that Namewee will be released tomorrow," he wrote.

Last week, Namewee uploaded the CNY-themed Like a Dog music video, in which he and other individuals are seen dancing “indecently” in front of Masjid Putra in Putrajaya.

The video which went viral had angered many netizens and public who urged the MCMC to investigate the headline-grabbing local rapper.

"I am not afraid because I believe Malaysia has justice," he said in a Facebook post that was accompanied by a picture of him at Bukit Aman.

Police had said they were tracking down Namewee as the video allegedly offended the feelings and sensitivities of the multi-racial community in the country.

On Sunday (Feb 18), Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the police had opened up investigation papers on Namewee with regard to his video clip.

Mohamad Fuzi said the case was being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The dog theme in the video was in conjunction with the Chinese Year of the Dog.

The controversial musician and director said that the video was shot by the side of a main road in Putrajaya, with the Prime Minister's Office a kilometre away in the background.

Beliau berkata, Namewee ditahan mengikut Seksyen 298A Kanun Keseksaan dan Seksyen 233 Akta Komunikasi dan Multimedia 1998. Namewee sebelum ini memuat naik status di akaun Facebooknya mendakwa dia tampil ke Bukit Aman untuk memberi keterangan berhubung klip video berkenaan. Dia turut memuat naik status memaklumkan dia ditahan pihak polis untuk siasatan lanjut. Sebelum ini, Ketua Polis Negara Tan Sri Muhamad Fuzi Harun memaklumkan pihaknya membuka kertas siasatan berhubung klip video berkenaanz Baru-baru ini, Namewee memuat naik klip video terbarunya sempena Tahun Baharu Cina bertajuk ‘Like A Dog’ yang memaparkan individu memakai topeng anjing dengan tarian lucah berlatarbelakangkan bangunan Pejabat Perdana Menteri Putrajaya.
