With the threat of significant snow and blizzard conditions, the army has been readied to assist British citizens in the event of the Baltic weather bringing Britain to a standstill. BBC Weather forecasters have outlined where and when the UK is most likely to be smashed by the blizzard conditions as the cold weather continues into the week. BBC Weather has warned that southern England may experience a “full-blown” blizzard. BBC Weather meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker said: “The advise is to keep track of the weather forecast, because you may be surprised just how much snow could be heading your way over the next few days or so.

We could be heading for a full-blown blizzard across the south, toward the end of the week BBC Weather forecaster Tomasz Schafernaker

“For some of us, it is going to be a very troublesome week on the weather front.” The BBC Weather forecaster adds: “A covering of snow first thing on Monday morning, the ground looks frozen solid so the snow will have no problem settling. “I think on Monday morning we will be seeing scenes like this, nothing too significant.” Most of the UK’s major cities can expect a dusting of snow, according to the forecaster.

Tuesday is expected to bring “persistent and heavy snow” from Lincolnshire to parts of Midlands, down towards central areas. Schafernaker continues: “On Wednesday, you can see the snow showers continue from East Anglia and the south east across Lincolnshire all the way into eastern Scotland, some in Northern Ireland some out west as well.” The BBC Weather forecaster then offered a prediction of the amount of snow that could cover parts of the UK across the week. As much as “20cm” could cover parts of eastern and eastern Scotland, according to Schafernaker.

He, however, concludes with a shock warning that Britons should be prepared for the worst of the weather toward the end of the week. Schafernaker said: “The real problem arises toward the end of the week, this low pressure gets stuck in this cold easterly wind and we could be heading for a full-blown blizzard across the south, toward the end of the week.” Sub-zero temperatures, ice and have wintry downpours threaten to cause travel chaos, power cuts and loss of mobile phone signal, Government forecasters have warned. Met Office meteorologist Charlie Powell said: “Unusually for Britain, the snow is going to be quite dry so it will blow around and gather in drifts and we could see some blizzard conditions. “We don’t want to scare people but they should make sure they are prepared for some seriously cold weather.”

Freezing cold air from the Atlantic will bring “blizzards, gale force winds and a wide-spread spell of heavy wet snow” to the UK tomorrow, warned BBC Weather forecaster Susan Powell. Ms Powell said there will also be a risk of some “freezing rain” causing travel disruption for millions. Train operators around the country have already warned commuters there will be fewer or no services tomorrow.

Train operator c2c warned passengers it will limit its services to and from London from Monday evening, advising people not to travel on Tuesday. Greater Anglia will also be affected with reduced and slower services from London to Ipswich, Cambridge and Peterborough. Britain is facing its coldest February and March in five years, with a rare Siberian weather phenomenon bringing bitterly cold air and snow sweeping from the East. The increasingly disruptive weather conditions have forced the Met Office to issue a series of yellow warnings expected to turn to amber in several areas across Britain over the course of the next few hours.

The Met Office is predicting up to 10cm of snow in places with the potential of widespread travel disruption. There are also warnings of possible power cuts. Sky News science correspondent Thomas Moore said: "In some parts of the country you are looking at potentially disruptive amounts of snow over the next few days. There are weather warnings in force which start at around 2 am tomorrow morning. "There are two bands of snow over Britain, one going through Essex down into Kent and Sussex but also in the North East, a region stretching from the East Midlands all the way out towards Scarborough. These two bands of snow will push further West during the day, so you are looking at potentially ten to 15 cm in those areas."

Snow showers or longer periods of snow are expected on Tuesday, accompanied by very low temperatures.

This update removes much of southwest England, which now looks less likely to be affected.

There is the potential for travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel. Some rural communities could become cut off. Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.

The BBC News weather forecast on the Today programme also warned Britain could be hit by “blizzard” conditions towards the end of the week. The BBC Weather forecaster described Monday as “tame” compared to what was forecast to hit the country throughout the week. The Met Office has also issued amber weather warnings for snow for much of the east of England and Scotland. BBC Weather forecaster Susan Powell said: “We have got some challenging weather, certainly for the week ahead. If anything, perhaps today comparatively one of the tamest days.

“Things I will emphasise, obviously it’s going to be cold, we are going to have widespread frosts, which means ice is likely to be a problem. “The wind is going to make things feel colder. That will become more of a factor from mid-week onwards. “And then the snow which is probably going to be the most difficult element to pin down precisely. “What I will say, it is, obviously the detail will get better, the shorter-term period you are looking at, stay up to date with the weather warnings… at the moment the Met Office has amber weather warnings for Tuesday and Wednesday, meaning be prepared for disruption.

We are looking at blizzards and some significant snow Susan Powell

“For Tuesday the areas we are concerned about are the northeast of England through into the Midlands and the far southeast of England. “For Wednesday eastern Scotland and the far east of England where the snow showers are likely to provide some significant accumulations and cause disruption. “Later on in the week though for the southern half of the British Isles , we are looking at blizzards and some significant snow”. Up to a foot of snow could fall across Britain by the end of the week as the bone-chilling Siberian winds sweep across the country. Dubbed the “Beast of the East”, the weather model sweeping across Britain could even bring winds feeling close to -15C due to windchill.

Met Office meteorologist Charlie Powell said: “Unusually for Britain , the snow is going to be quite dry so it will blow around and gather in drifts and we could see some blizzard conditions. “We don’t want to scare people but they should make sure they are prepared for some seriously cold weather.” The Met Office added that snowfall through the week will cause disruption and forecasters warned with a significant windchill meant “some people are looking at the coldest spell of weather they will have experienced for many, many years”. The Ministry of Defence said three battalions are ready to help councils if severe weather teams are unable to cope. A spokesman said: “We have the right people with the right training and the right equipment to help deal with any contingency.” Bookmaker Coral even slashed odds for snow to fall in London before the end of February to 4-1.

“The Beast from the East is going to bombard Britain and as the whole country prepares for snow we’ve slashed our odds on the capital being dowsed in the white stuff,” said Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead." As much as “20cm” could cover parts of eastern and eastern Scotland, according to BBC News meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker. He, however, concludes with a shock warning that Britons should be prepared for the worst of the weather toward the end of the week. Schafernaker said: “The real problem arises toward the end of the week, this low pressure gets stuck in this cold easterly wind and we could be heading for a full-blown blizzard across the south, toward the end of the week.” Weather Channel forecaster Katie Greening said: “An extensive area of low pressure will arrive just to the west of Iberia during Wednesday.
