“Downsizing” was directed by Alexander Payne who, with Jim Taylor, wrote the story and screenplay. The film stars Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Kristen Wiig and Hong Chau. I went to this film expecting to see an elaboration of a very tempting trailer but, unfortunately, the best part of the film was, in fact, all in the trailer itself. What starts out with a very intriguing concept, i.e. shrinking human beings to a height of 5 inches with a proportionate environment around them, loses itself in the first 30 minutes and travels in a number of different directions, most of which involve the writer’s political statements about climate change and the harm humans are doing to the planet. Also, to add another negative to the film is the role played by Thailand actress Hong Chau and what has to be the worst attempt ever made at imitating a Vietnamese émigré. Simply stated, she ruins each scene in which she appears with this ‘chalk on a blackboard” dialogue. Couple all of this with plot changes and ideas that make no sense and you have a disappointing and uncomfortable 135 minutes. I give the film a rating of 6.02 because of what it started out to be, and could have been, but unfortunately went downhill in mid reel. In summary, all of Mr. Payne’s efforts as director and co-writer of this film came up short (pun intended).

Alexander Payne is a great writer-director (both The Descendants and Sideways won him Oscars) with a flair for smart ideas and strong characterisation. His latest, Downsizing, has to be one of the most brilliant story conceits in years.

But the movie which starts with incredible promise and is utterly engrossing then morphs inexplicably into a completely different film halfway through. And so here we are, disappointed and bewildered, reading a three-star review.

Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig are effortlessly fantastic as the most ordinary American couple imaginable, leading perfectly average and unscintillating lives in their plaid shirts and three-quarter length trousers. Scientific advancements in the last decade have made it possible for Joe Citizen to physically downsize, at reasonable cost, and assume a smaller, cheaper but more luxurious life in a small-people compound. By undergoing the process of cellular reduction and reducing to 5 inches tall, humankind is seeking to decrease its waste and footprint to save the dwindling planet.

Fabulous idea, solid message. With Everyman Damon at the helm, the first half of the film transfixes with its unexplained science and beguiling wish fulfilment (the small people can afford to live in much more salubrious surrounds and even if you think it's tacky, your mind boggles at the possibilities). Having lost the opportunity to study medicine at college, Damon's passive, wistful characterisation hints at the maxim that life's too short to watch all your dreams disappear.

Paramount Pictures Director Alexander Payne talks Downsizing

But once "on the other side", things don't work out quite as he'd hoped and the audience's interest starts to wane. The moment Christoph Waltz gurns his way through the front door, Downsizing becomes a strange morality tale which encourages us to laugh at a young Vietnamese woman while absorbing the very 2018 lecture that inequality lives on in all well-meaning situations. This is fine – it's an important point – but delivered so muddily and with such a bizarre change in tone (and that bloody Waltz along for the ride) that the story winds up neither engaging nor instructing.
