Manchester City's quest to win the Carabao Cup for a third consecutive year continues on Wednesday when they travel to Oxford United.

Pep Guardiola's side won a domestic treble last term, and the League Cup represents their first shot at silverware this season.

Oxford are just outside the League One play-off positions in eighth place, and they will be huge outsiders to progress at the expense of the holders.

Preview

Guardiola is expected to field a blend of youth and reserve players for his side's match at a familiar lower-league ground. City won 3-0 at the Kassam Stadium in the third round of the competition last season.

Phil Foden ran the show during that victory, and U's manager Karl Robinson compared the teenager to Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta.

The 19-year-old could be a thorn in the side of Oxford once more on Wednesday after he started in Sunday's 3-0 Premier League win at Arsenal.

Foden continues to operate on the fringes of the City team, after making eight appearances in the Premier League this season, with seven of those coming from the bench.

The England under-21 international has seen most of his recent action in the UEFA Champions League, scoring twice and providing two assists in four games.

There could be a surprise return for Sergio Aguero after a month out with a thigh injury. The Argentina international was pictured in training on Monday:

The 31-year-old has been missing for a month, but the cup tie might be too soon for a full 90 minutes.

Guardiola has previously shown great respect for the League Cup and resisted wholesale changes in favour of including more established players.

Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez could join Foden in midfield after cameo roles off the bench against the Gunners.

City's receding chances of retaining the Premier League could shift increased emphasis on to cup competitions.

Oxford are without a victory in their last three matches in all competitions, and more worryingly for Robinson, his side have failed to score in those games.

A collapse in form is the last thing needed when your next opponent is one of the best in the world; and even with City's rotated squad, Guardiola will still have world-class players at his disposal.

The Sky Blues have won four of the past six League Cup finals, and they will be looking to extend that run beyond the tie at the Kassam Stadium.

Sports Mole rounds up Manchester City's latest injury and suspension news ahead of their EFL Cup quarter-final at League One Oxford United on Wednesday.

Manchester City will continue their quest for a third successive EFL Cup trophy and fifth in seven years when they take on League One Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium on Wednesday night.

The holders and reigning English champions swept Arsenal aside at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday and will be expecting an even more straightforward evening against an Oxford side without a goal in their last three games.

The hosts have already upset the odds on a number of occasions in this season's competition, though, and they will be dreaming of their biggest giant-killing yet when City come to town.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Man City's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the contest.

Leroy Sane

Status: Out

Type of injury: Knee

Possible return date: February 1 (vs. Tottenham Hotspur)

Leroy Sane is still on the long road to recovery after sustaining knee ligament damage in the Community Shield against Liverpool in August. The winger will be back before the end of the season, but remains over a month away from a return.

Aymeric Laporte

Status: Out

Type of injury: Knee

Possible return date: February 1 (vs. Tottenham Hotspur)

Another long-term absentee, Aymeric Laporte is also targeting a February return having been sidelined since the end of August with a serious knee injury.

Sergio Aguero

Status: Major doubt

Type of injury: Thigh

Possible return date: December 18 (vs. Oxford)

Pep Guardiola has refused to put an exact timeframe on Sergio Aguero's recovery from a thigh problem, but it is highly unlikely that he will be risked in this match. The weekend's game with Leicester City is a possible target, although a return after Christmas seems more likely.

David Silva

Status: Minor doubt

Type of injury: Knock

Possible return date: December 18 (vs. Oxford)

David Silva has missed the last two games after suffering a knock to his leg, but he is expected to be available for the visit to Oxford.

John Stones

Status: Out

Type of injury: Thigh

Possible return date: Unknown

John Stones has also missed the last two games, and his injury is more serious than Silva's with Guardiola confirming that the centre-back will miss "a few weeks".

With a penalty shootout win over Rochdale, and a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the last round already in the bag, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are hoping to reach the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since the 2016/17 campaign, when we went on to lift the trophy at Wembley.

As for our visitors from League Two, Colchester are the lowest ranked club left in the Carabao Cup, but have already claimed two scalps on their way to the quarter-finals, with wins against Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur, and John McGreal's side will be eager to reach the last four for the first time in their history.

Here's the key information ahead of Wednesday's game...

THE looming quarter-final with Manchester City will not prove a distraction for Oxford United today, Rob Dickie has vowed.

Before Karl Robinson’s men can focus on the clash with the Premier League giants on Wednesday they visit Milton Keynes Dons bidding to keep pace with Sky Bet League One’s promotion pack.

Their hosts are desperate for points at the other end of the table, but Dickie insists nobody will be taking their eye off the ball this afternoon.

He said: “To be fair no-one has really been speaking about it (City).

“We’re all focused on the job in hand in the league.

“That’s the way we’ve been all season, whatever competition it’s been.

“No game in this league can you think the points are already yours, no chance.

“They’ve recently changed managers so you get a bit of a high when you do that.

“We’ll respect them as much as anyone else.”

United may start as favourites, but they are some way below full strength due to a full treatment room.

Robinson, who has won on his two visits to Stadium MK as an away manager, said: “They will probably look at our team and think this is the best opportunity you’ll have against Oxford United this season, but I can assure you it’s not.

“We believe in what we have in the club.”

One area the U’s have been strong of late is at the back.

They have conceded just once in the last six games and no-one in the top four tiers has kept more than their 14 clean sheets this season.

It is a source of great pride for Dickie and the centre back believes amid the injury problems the onus is on the fit players to shoulder the burden.

He said: “We feel the responsibility to step up even more and I think that’s what we’ve been doing.

“Even without players like Cam Brannagan, who is a massive player for us, we’ve managed to keep going.

“We played really well against Shrewsbury last week (which finished 0-0).

“Whoever plays at the moment we feel really confident.”

OXFORD United have been drawn away at Banbury United in the quarter-finals of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup.

Thame United host Oxfordshire Senior League Premier Division side Horspath, while Oxford City will entertain Kidlington.

Clanfield 85 are at home to West Oxfordshire neighbours North Leigh.

All four ties are set to be played next month.
