Satu-satunya kejadian saat Mou tidak mengantar klub asuhannya ke babak 16 besar Liga Champions adalah musim 2007-2008 bersama Chelsea.
Akan tetapi, saat itu Mourinho tidak menyelesaikan fase grup.
Pelatih berpaspor Portugal itu sudah dipecat Chelsea setelah matchday 1 Liga Champions.

Mourinho buka suara terkait apa yang dikatakannya saat tim tertinggal.
"Bukan ahli pemain kami untuk merasakan tekanan ini di kandang dan mereka belum mendapatkan hasil terbaik dalam beberapa bulan terakhir," ucap Mourinho dikutip dari situs UEFA.
"Saya mengatakan kepada mereka untuk tetap tenang, tetap percaya diri dan percaya diri," tuturnya.
Pelatih asal Portugal itu pun mengakui bahwa Olympiakos adalah lawan yang sulit.
"Sulit, mereka tim yang bagus, sangat terorganisasi dengan baik, dan mereka menyerang harga diri dan kepercayaan diri kami," tutur Mourinho.

Sebanyak 32 tim bertarung di fase grup, dibagi menjadi delapan grup dengan setiap grupnya dihuni empat tim. Dua tim teratas di klasemen akhir setiap grup melaju ke 16 besar atau perdelapan final.
