UPDATE 12:20 P.M.

A man has died after being shot by police following a chain of criminal events in the east metro on Monday morning.

The armed suspect was shot in the Hidden Valley Trail neighborhood of Cottage Grove, shortly after he had taken a family of four hostage after breaking into their home around 9 a.m.

He had broken into the home after using a handgun to steal a car from a resident in the neighborhood around 8:30 a.m.

This came about a half-hour after he car-jacked another vehicle in Maplewood, demanding the vehicle driver take him to St. Paul, where he reportedly committed a "very serious crime."

The hostages were able to escape, with the suspect taking their pickup truck in a bid to escape, but crashed shortly afterwards.

He then fled on foot where he was confronted by police officers, two of whom opened fire, killing him.

Original story

Police officers in Cottage Grove have been involved in a shooting, which is reportedly linked to a possible abduction in the east metro Monday morning.

The Cottage Grove Police Department confirmed it is at the scene of an officer-involved shooting near Hidden Valley Trail, saying there is "no longer a threat" to the safety of residents in the area.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is among several agencies that have responded to the scene.

More information will be released at a noon press conference, but it appears as though the shooting has stemmed from an alleged abduction in Maplewood earlier this morning.

A Maplewood Police Department commander told KARE 11 that it appears a woman was abducted from a parking lot in Maplewood, before being taken to her home in St. Paul where several more crimes occurred.

The Star Tribune however, citing dispatch audio, categorized the suspect's alleged crimes as car-jackings, with the armed suspect fleeing to an occupied home and breaking in, before being shot as he tried to leave in a pickup.

Hidden Valley Lane and Hidden Valley Trail are linked residential roads, carrying out a loop that is bisected towards its northern end by Hidden Valley Park.

Police are looking for a man in connection with an attempted abduction of an eight-year-old girl outside a Downsview elementary school on Friday.

Officers responded to a call near Blaydon Public School just before 9 p.m. after reports of a suspicious incident in the Downsview neighbourhood.

It was reported that the girl was walking around 3:30 p.m. when she was approached by a strange man.

The man allegedly grabbed her, covered her mouth with his hand and dragged her around 60 meters to an SUV, police say.

Officers said that the man tried to force her into the vehicle, but she was able to break free and run away.

“As far as I am aware she is fine. She didn’t suffer any significant injury," Const. David Hopkinson said. “She is probably very shaken up, very afraid."

The suspect is described to be white, skinny, around 40 to 50 years old, and to have short grey hair. According to police, he was wearing a pink and blue t-shirt and grey sweatpants with black dress shoes.

The vehicle that is believed to belong to the suspect is a red Mazda CX-5, which was captured on security camera footage.

“I believe there were other people around or nearby,” Hopkinson said. “I believe the attack happened very quickly."

"We are hoping someone saw something strange, maybe him driving in the area, maybe him driving away.”

The Toronto District School Board said they have been made aware of the incident and will be "reviewing street proofing tips with students on Monday."

The school board will also be sending a letter home to parents.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact them or to reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Police are searching for a man wanted in connection with the abduction of an 8-year-old girl, who is now safe, near Blaydon Public School in North York.

According to police, it is reported that an 8-year-old girl was walking in the area around 3:30 p.m. on Friday when she was approached by a “strange” man who grabbed her, covered her mouth with his hand and dragged her 60 metres to an SUV.

Police said the man tried to force the girl into his SUV but she broke free and ran away. According to police, the girl located a parent she knew who contacted the police. She is now safe.

Around 8:50 p.m. on Friday, Toronto police responded to a call for a suspicious incident in the area of Langholm Dr. and Blaydon Ave., near the intersection of Sheppard Ave. W and Keele St.

Const. David Hopkinson said the police are considering the incident an abduction rather than an attempted abduction given that the man had possession of the girl before she broke free.

“It was only when the man took one hand off her to open the SUV door that she was able to escape,” said Hopkinson. “The period of time where the man lifted her off the ground and dragged her to the car is what we’re considering an abduction.”

The man was completely unknown to the girl, Hopkinson said.

He is described as white, between the ages of 40-50, 5’8” with a skinny build and short grey hair. Police say he was wearing a blue and pink t-shirt, grey sweat pants, and black dress shoes. He drove away in what is believed to be a red Mazda CX-5 with tinted windows, police say.
