Manny Pacquiao showed on Saturday night he still has plenty of fight in a dominant win over Adrien Broner – and called out Floyd Mayweather in his post-fight press conference.

With Mayweather watching from ringside in Las Vegas, Pacquiao showed flashes of his old speed in winning a unanimous 12-round decision over Broner to easily defend his piece of the welterweight title. It was the 61st win of a remarkable career in which Pacquiao has won titles in eight weight classes.

Pacquiao was repeatedly asked about a rematch with Mayweather after the fight. “My message is I’m still active, and if [Mayweather] goes back to the ring and wants to challenge me, I’m a champion. Get back to the ring and we will fight again if he wants,” he said. “If he wants to come out of retirement, then announce it and challenge me. I’m a champion and I don’t pick any opponent. I’m just waiting to see who will challenge me, who will challenge [for] my belt.”

Pacquaio won a lopsided decision that was never in doubt before a crowd that roared at every punch he landed. The decision was never in doubt, but Pacquiao pressed the fight into the later rounds as he tried unsuccessfully to score a knockout. Two judges favored Pacquiao by a 116-112 score, while the third had it 117-111. The Guardian scored it 119-109 for Pacquiao.

There were no knockdowns, but Pacquiao landed the heavier punches — and lots of them. He caught Broner in the seventh and ninth rounds with big left hands that sent him backward, while Broner spent most of the fight looking for one big counter that never came.

“At the age of 40 I can still give my best,” Pacquiao said. “Although I wanted to be aggressive more, my camp told me don’t be careless and to counter him and wait for opportunities.”

Broner, meanwhile, fought like he was merely trying to survive, despite being 11 years younger than his opponent. He was booed loudly as he raised his hands in victory and jumped on the corner ropes as if he had won.

“I came and I gave them what they weren’t looking for,” said Broner. “If you ask me, I feel like I won the fight, but I’m not about to sit here with a sad face. I’m all right, I’m all right and I will be back and I will be champion again.”

Asked about Broner’s verdict, Pacquiao said: “We cannot blame him. I’m sure he will review the fight and think about it. He is a good boxer. He’s fast, he moves fast – he’s a former champion, so he’s the kind of fighter that you cannot underestimate, you cannot take him lightly. He gave me a hard time.”

Mayweather watched it all intently from his ringside seat, and was coy about possibly coming out of retirement for a reprise of the 2015 lackluster fight Mayweather won by decision over Pacquiao.

“You keep asking me about Manny Pacquiao,” Mayweather said during the fight. “He needs to get past Adrien Broner first. And right now I’m living a happy and healthy life.”

Showtime announcer Jim Gray tried to get Mayweather to climb into the ring after the fight and discuss a possible bout with Pacquiao, but Mayweather demurred.

It was the first fight in the US in two years for Pacquiao, who reunited with trainer Freddie Roach for a bout that would determine how much he had left at the age of 40. Turns out he had plenty, in a fight that was entertaining even if it wasn’t a classic.

Daily Telegraph reporter Jamie Pandaram went the extra distance on assignment in Manila with boxing great Manny Pacquiao.

What it's like to be punched by Manny Pacquiao 1:20

Manny Pacquiao still packs a punch at age 40 — even if he couldn’t completely put away Adrien Broner in a one-sided affair in Las Vegas.

The eight division world champion showed he’s still a world-class fighter by never giving a strangely-inactive Broner a sniff to win a unanimous decision (116-112 x2, 117-111).

“I feel so happy because I did my best in the fight,” Pacquiao said. “I thank God for this victory.

“I wanted to be more aggressive but my coach said don’t be careless.

“I really don’t believe my career is over. I proved it last year … and I proved it again tonight.”

Pacquiao was asked about a potential rematch with Floyd Mayweather after the fight and declared he was willing.

Showtime’s Jim Gray then asked Mayweather, who was sitting ringside, to nod if he accepted the challenge. Mayweather didn’t flinch to leave that conversation for another day.

Broner then gate-crashed Gray and started mouthing off. “I beat him,” Broner said. “Everyone out there I know him better.”

When Gray told him the most punches he landed in a round was about eight, Broner remained defiant.

“It already sounds like you was against me. I ain’t getting a fair shake talking to you,” he said.

“I did this for the hood. You all know I beat that boy.”

I'm honestly not sure what planet Broner lives on. He was utterly destroyed. #PacquaioBroner pic.twitter.com/74zbtxZddp — Allan Bell (@AllanBell247) January 20, 2019

Anyone think Broner really believes he won or he just playing his role? What was that?! The judges were generous with the score if you ask me. — Shane Mosley (@ShaneMosley_) January 20, 2019

Broner says post fight he won fight. He beat him.

Entire crowd erupts in laughter.

This guy is a clown.

Pacquiao, fighting for the first time since turning 40, left the American wobbly with a number of signature counters but couldn’t send him to the canvas inside their 12 rounds.

The Filipino legend, now 61-7-2, will receive a guaranteed purse of $14 million plus a percentage of the profits which is expected to reap him at worst another $14 million.

Broner was somewhat lucky to be offered a shot at Pacquiao’s WBA title after going winless in his past two appearances against Mikey Garcia (unanimous decision loss) and Jessie Vargas (majority draw). He now faces a huge uphill battle with three losses in a row.

The card

Manny Pacquiao (61-7-2) defeate Adrien Broner (33-4-1) via unanimous decision to defend WBA welterweight title

Marcus Browne (23-0) defeated Badou Jack (22-1-3) via unanimous decision for the vacant WBC silver light heavyweight title

Nordine Oubaali (14-0) defeated Rau’shee Warren (16-2) via unanimous decision for the vacant WBC bantamweight title

Pacquiao-Broner: Round by round R1: New-look Pacquiao sporting compression tights on his calves. He’s the more active fighter early and finds a home for his left straight to the body a few times. Broner attempting to counter with his left hook without much success. Pacquiao 10-9 R2: Awkward match-up with Broner largely sitting back and Pacquiao making intermittent bull rushes forward. Neither man doing a lot but Pacquiao shaded him 20-18 R3: Pacquiao hasn’t lost any of his speed but most of his combinations are missing. Broner’s defence is solid, but his offence is non-existent. Pacquiao 30-27 R4: Much improved round from Broner as he settles in to his work. Countering with better timing and growing in confidence. Pacquiao 39-37 R5: Pacquiao responds to perhaps dropping his first round of the fight by making Broner miss and miss and miss. He only landed a few clear scoring shots himself but it was enough. Pacquiao 49-46 R6: Pacquiao body shot a minute in might have been the best punch of the fight so far. That one hurt Broner, who is beginning to fall in a hole. Pacquiao 59-55 R7: BRONER HURT! Pacquiao catches the American midway through the round and unloads a flurry of punches. It was a straight right that started the destruction before a left hook around Broner’s guard left him stunned. Broner keeps his feet but doesn’t look good. Pacquiao 69-64 R8: Recovery round for Broner as he dances around the ring and Pacquiao largely allows him to do so. It’s the Filipino with just enough offence to take the round - and earn himself just as many points he did during the completely one-sided affair in round seven. That’s boxing. Pacquiao 79-73 R9: More heavy punishment for Broner! Pacquiao puts together another dominant round after landing a left hand right on Broner’s chin. His legs buckled but he stayed up - and covered up as Pacquiao continued the assault. Pacquiao 89-82 R10: Not sure we’re going to get a finish here. Broner doesn’t look like he’s going to hunt the KO and Pacquiao knows he can keep piling up rounds without taking much risk. Pacquiao 99-91 R11: Underwhelming finish. Broner should be doing more, Pacquiao doing just enough. Pacquiao 109-100 R12: Broner fails to respond to his corner’s plea to let his hands go and the pro-Pacquiao crowd rises to its feet in celebration. Broner cluelessly and shamelessly jumps on to the corner of the ring as if he’s won. Dreamer. Pacquiao 119-109 Share

‘Looks like a murder scene’ A bloody cut and bizarre light failure couldn’t prevent Marcus Browne and Badou Jack going the distance in a brutal undercard war. A Browne headbutt opened up a nasty cut on Jack’s forehead midway through the fight and left him blinking through blood the rest of the way. Referee Tony Weeks was left looking like he’d been working in a butcher shop as his shirt became soaked from continually separating the fighters. In the end it all mattered little as Browne dominated from start to finish to stay undefeated (23-0) and claim the vacant WBC silver lightweight title via unanimous decision (117-110, 116-111 and 119-108). Jack’s record dropped to 22-2-3 and he was left with a Harry Potter-esque gash in the middle of his forehead. Share

Nordine Oubaali claims title Nordine Oubaali snagged the vacant WBC bantamweight title after taking down Rau’shee Warren in an enthralling unanimous decision win. Kambosos not required to be ferocious George Kambosos Jr couldn’t find the finish to extend his three-fight knockout streak but won a comfortable decision against Rey Perez in an eight-rounder.
