“One of the most special things that our relationship has given us is a merging of families who love and respect each other’s faiths and cultures. Priyanka to play lady don in Bhansali’s next?
Priyanka Chopra, who is all set to make a comeback in Hindi films with Shonali Bose’s The Sky is Pink, has reportedly already put pen to paper for her next project. If a report on Bollywood Hungama is anything to go by, the actress will next star in director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film based on life and times of Gangubai Kothewali, one of the most dreaded pimps of Kamathipura, Mumbai’s red light area. The project is tentatively titled Heera Mandi.
Gangubai Kothewali, who was one of the most notorious lady dons of Mumbai, was known as ‘Madam of Kamathipura’ back in the day. It is believed that she forced several women into prostitution but many are of belief that it was her way to provide ‘protection’ to them. In fact, she was a respected figure among sex workers for she fought for their ‘empowerment’. In his book Mafia Queens of Bombay, writer Hussain Zaidi has written about her in detail. He has also mentioned how she had connections with people in power.
Priyanka, never in her film career, has shied away from playing real and gritty characters. If she has indeed decided to step into the shoes of Gangubai and that too, under the direction of one and the only Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it’s great news. An official confirmation on the project is awaited, however. (Loved Sophie Turner's green lehenga from Priyanka Chopra's mehendi ceremony? Be ready to shell out Rs 2.8 lakh)
