Mike Ashley employs one of the best in the business in Rafael Benitez, but the Newcastle owner must surely allow himself to cast the occasional covetous glance in the direction of Mauricio Pochettino. How could Ashley, who has a reputation for stingy stewardship, not be impressed by a manager who continues to deliver despite failing to spend a single penny this summer?
Pochettino’s team ground out a win which suggests they will be among the Premier League’s front-runners this season. They were not without fortune, the hosts striking their woodwork twice in an at times frenetic second half, as Tottenham secured a second consecutive opening-day victory on Tyneside. This was the kind of gritty away display on which successful campaigns are built.
Around 500 Newcastle supporters protested against Ashley at the doors of the Northumberland Street branch of Sports Direct pre-match. Their discontent was fuelled by the 53-year-old’s decision to spend £90 million on the fallen high-street giant House of Fraser in the wake of making a £20 million profit on summer’s transfer business – despite Benitez signing seven players.
The rumbling discontent continued throughout the afternoon in the form of constant anti-Ashley chants from the stands as Tottenham rode their luck somewhat to win.

Match Preview
Spurs became the first team since the Premier League introduced transfer windows to not welcome any new summer signings into their squad as the 2018 deadline passed. Though Pochettino was keen on a move for Jack Grealish , Aston Villa insisted that he was not for sale.
The north London side were successful in tying down deals for the head coach himself this summer as well as club talisman Harry Kane, but the fact that they were the only side – let alone top-four side – to not enhance their team will be a worrying detail heading into the new season.
Jose Mourinho bemoaned Manchester United's lack of transfer incomings but even he was able to contend with welcoming the likes of Diogo Dalot and Fred. Liverpool spent the most this summer, landing the likes of Alisson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri, while Manchester City strengthened with signing Riyad Mahrez and Chelsea made moves for Jorginho and Kepa.
A large majority of Tottenham players have only just returned to training, but Pochettino retains full faith in them.
Meanwhile, Benitez's Newcastle are arguably in their own state of turmoil, as the Spaniard and captain Jamaal Lascelles had to pen an open letter to fans urging them to unite and continue to give the club their unwavering support.

The Magpies boss was initially critical of his club's inability to sign the players he wished for earlier in the summer, but he ended the window with seven new signings – bringing in Rondon and Federico Fernandez shortly before the end of the transfer window.
"Doing good business in a transfer window is about ending the window clearly stronger than when you started and we believe we have done this," the letter read .
"The view we all share is that we have a better squad now than the one that finished 10th last season and all involved have worked tirelessly to make this happen."

Newcastle 1-2 Tottenham
Premier League 2018-19
St James' Park
Dele Alli overcame any post-World Cup rustiness to head Tottenham to an opening-day Premier League victory at Newcastle.
The England international's contribution sealed a 2-1 win at St James' Park, with all the goals coming inside the opening 18 minutes as Joselu cancelled out Jan Vertonghen's opener before Alli struck.
Spurs dominated the first half with Christian Eriksen prominent, but found themselves in a battle after the break during which Mohamed Diame and Salomon Rondon both hit the woodwork as the Magpies fought for some reward in front of a crowd of 51,749.
But it proved another frustrating afternoon for England skipper Harry Kane, who left Tyneside still awaiting his first ever Premier League goal in August after 14 games.

ES COVERAGE Hello and welcome to Standard Sport's LIVE coverage of Tottenham's trip to Newcastle as Mauricio Pochettino's men prepare to start the new season after a quiet summer. While Spurs failed to bring in any new faces before the summer deadline, they were boosted by the return of their World Cup semi-finalists earlier this week. Their fringe players, though, hardly struggled without their team-mates, winning the International Cup with two victories and a shootout loss. Trouble on the Tyne? As for Newcastle, it was yet another underwhelming transfer window. Manager Rafa Benitez cut a frustrated figure for much of the summer as owner Mike Ashley once again refused to spend big in the market. Benitez has already warned fans that survival is the target and admitted that they have reason to worry, particularly with newly promoted Wolves and Fulham splashing the cash. They did, however, manage eight signings (if you include the returns of Martin Dubravka and Kenedy) and we expect several to feature today. Team news is imminent... Tottenham team news Newcastle team news: Kane and Alli start It's been four weeks to the day since England's World Cup finally ended in the third place playoff, and Harry Kane and Dele Alli only returned to training this week, but both are straight into the line up. Photo: Reuters In fact, of the nine players Spurs had reach the last four of the World Cup, only Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose are not involved in some capacity today. World Cup winning captain Hugo Lloris is back in goal, with Eric Dier and Jan Vertoghen both featuring from the off. Moussa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld, who many people expected to have left the club by now, are both on the bench. Newboys on the bench Of Newcastle summer signings, only Martin Dubravka and Kenedy start - and both were on loan at the club during the back end of last season anyway. Salomon Rondon, Ki Sung-yeung, Fabian Schar and Yoshinori Muto are all on the bench for now. Mo Diame is fit following a hip injury. No debutants Both managers sticking two fingers up at the transfer window here - there's not a single player in the starting 22 who will be making his debut today. That can't be too regular an occurrence on the first day of the season. In case you hadn't heard, Spurs didn't sign a single player this summer... Interesting to see Lucas Moura get a start today. Photo: Reuters He had little impact after signing from Paris Saint-Germain in January - as is often the case with mid-season arrivals - but with a full preseason behind him we could see a different player. With Erik Lamela injured and Son Heung-Min off to the Asian Games soon, Spurs could do with the Brazilian hitting the ground running. SOCIAL Our man Dan Kilpatrick is live at St James' Park... Miracle recovery? The return of those five Spurs players who featured in the final stages of the World Cup really is remarkable. It's also a bit of a surprise to see Son, who has had a decent preseason after South Korea were knocked out in the group stages, on the bench. Dier, Kane, Alli, Lloris and Vertonghen only returned to training on Monday. There must've been a few fitness sessions on the beach... Kane's August goal search Did you know that Harry Kane has never scored a Premier League goal in August? Because I'm not sure that enough has been made of it. It sounds like a stupid thing to say about a man who won the Golden Boot at the World Cup this summer, but he hasn't quite looked at his best since returning from that ankle knock in April. Could Spurs regret rushing him back so soon? Photo: PA World Cup hangover? A few years ago we heard Arsenal's Per Mertesacker talk about how difficult it is to get motivated for the routine of Premier League football after the high of a successful World Cup. When you consider that Belgium and England both exceeded expectations, while Hugo Lloris lifted the trophy with France, pretty much half the Spurs squad were enjoying the best moments of their careers just a few weeks ago. A Saturday lunchtime trip to Newcastle isn't quite on the same level, is it? Can Shelvey keep his head? This is, of course, a repeat of the opening day last season, when Spurs took all three points from St James' Park. After an even first half, Jonjo Shelvey was sent off for a stamp on Dele Alli and Spurs eventually cruised to a 2-0 victory. Photo: Getty In case you missed it... The new Premier League season got underway last night, as Manchester United beat Leicester 2-1 at Old Trafford. The second game of the season is less than ten minutes away... Players in the tunnel Jamaal Lascelles, leading Newcastle out, looks across the tunnel and sees the World Cup winning captain standing opposite him. No pressure lad... KICK OFF! We're underway at St James' Park... 1 min: Here we go then. Spurs immediately on the offensive with Moussa Sissoko racing in behind to a chorus of boos against his former club. Kieran Clark cleans him out, much to the joy of the Toon faithful, but it's a free kick. 3mins: Crafty short one from Christian Eriksen feeds Ben Davies but his shot is blocked. Spurs, by the way, are playing in their new third kit , which was launched about half an hour ago. 5 mins: Bright start from Newcastle, with Shelvey's range of passing already on show. The ball breaks to Matt Ritchie on the edge of the box but his half volley is wild. 6 mins: Shambolic pass from Mo Diame runs straight to Harry Kane. He feeds Lucas Moura who drives into the Newcastle area but Clark is across well to block. Next
