NATIONAL SISTERS DAY – First Sunday in August
National Sisters Day – First Sunday in August is your chance to show your appreciation for that unique bond only sisters can understand.
All siblings have the odd argument here and there, but deep down there’s little way around the natural connection between siblings. Cherish the memories and make plans to create new ones. Reconnect or patch up any misunderstandings. Sisters are forever.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Make this day a special celebration with your sister. If you don’t have a sister, you can still celebrate the friendships of sisterhood by having a girls’ night out! Post on social media using #NationalSistersDay to encourage others to do the same.

NATIONAL FRIENDSHIP DAY
According to the National Friendship Day declaration, we are invited to “observe this day in an appropriate manner, in accordance with the culture and other appropriate circumstances or customs of their local, national and regional communities, including through education and public awareness-raising activities”.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Get in contact with your friends for a chat or visit. Post on social media using #NationalFriendshipDay to encourage others to join in paying it forward.
HISTORY
National Friendship Day was originally founded by Hallmark in 1919. It was intended to be a day for people to celebrate their friendship by sending each other cards, but by 1940 the market had dried up, and eventually, it died out completely. However, in 1998 Winnie the Pooh was named the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations, and in April 2011 the United Nations officially recognized 30th July as International Friendship Day; although most countries celebrate on the first Sunday of August!

NATIONAL UNDERWEAR DAY – August 5
National Underwear Day – August 5 for the annual observation. If you’re like many Americans, your mother warned you to always wear clean underwear, because you never know when you will be in an accident! Although there are probably better reasons to wear fresh underwear, this is the one that most often comes to mind.
Underwear is the layer of clothing worn closest to the body and under the outer clothing. It protects clothing from sweat and provides the wearer protections from cold and chafing. Underwear also provides support and shapes a body. Fabrics allow underwear to be designed for specific climates and sports. They are designed for both modesty and to look alluring.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Embrace your body image. Use #NationalUnderwearDay to post on social media and encourage others to join in. If you are the bashful type, just wear your underwear around the house when no one is home. One can also celebrate by watching the 1983 romance comedy “Risky Business” starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay.
HISTORY
Freshpair founded National Underwear Day on August 5th, 2003.

AMERICAN FAMILY DAY
American Family Day on the First Sunday in August is a perfect occasion to enjoy the waning summer rays with those dearest to us. Established as a day encouraging families to spend time with one another, the Day was specifically proclaimed to avoid gifts and to focus on family relationships.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Enjoy your family! Play games outdoors or go for a walk. Pick up some fresh fruit and visit grandparents. Post on social media using #AmericanFamilyDay to encourage others to join in paying it forward.
HISTORY
Now annually celebrated across the United States on the first Sunday in August, this day began as a 1-year proclamation signed by Governor Raul Castro, declaring August 7, 1977, as American Family Day. The following year, Governor Bruce Babbit signed American Family Day into law as an official Arizona holiday.

NATIONAL WORK LIKE A DOG DAY
The English language is often confusing. Take, for instance, two common idioms we use in our everyday lives: “It’s a dog’s life” and “Work like a dog.”
“It’s a dog’s life” refers to dogs being able to laze around and sleep all day, having no worries or issues more pressing than dinner time. “Work like a dog,” on the other hand, suggests just the opposite. It means working to your maximum ability for an extended length of time. How can these two phrases both be appropriate when they mean contradictory things?
HOW TO OBSERVE
You can celebrate by either working very hard or – if you’d rather – simply by sharing on Social Media just how hard you work using #NationalWorkLikeADogDay to keep folks informed.
HISTORY
Although the origins of “Work like a dog” are not known, it most likely refers to actual working dogs. Sheep dogs and sled dogs are good examples. They are bred to work hard – working even gives them pleasure.

NATIONAL OYSTER DAY
National Oyster Day is observed annually on August 5th. Oysters are enjoyed as a seafood in many parts of the world.
Did you know there are over 100 different species of oysters? They’re typically named after the body of water in which they’re grown because oysters take on the characteristics of the water in which they live.
Here are some other interesting oyster facts:
The largest oyster-producing body of water in the world is located in Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of the U.S.
Almost two billion pounds of oysters are eaten each year.
In the U.S., east coast oysters tend to be smaller, milder and saltier. West coast oysters are creamy and sweet.
Only one out of every 10,000 oysters will produce a pearl.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Make or order a dish that uses oyster as one of its main ingredients. Use #NationalOysterDay to post on social media.
HISTORY
The origins of National Oyster Day have not been determined.
Happy National Sisters Day! The first Sunday in August is designated as an unofficial holiday to celebrate this special relationship, whether she is your blood relative or a chosen sister.
It’s estimated that 80 percent of Americans have at least one sibling. We spend a lot of time fighting growing up; researchers say that siblings can have as many as 10 arguments per hour during young childhood! (You can read more about this topic here).
But your relationship with your sibling is typically the longest-lasting one you’ll ever have. Americans pay tribute to this special bond with, of course, memes and social media shout-outs! Here’s a roundup of some of the best shared so far:
