INDIA VS ENGLAND 1ST TEST DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS FROM BIRMINGHAM:
India vs England, 1st Test Match, Day 1: The first day of the first Test match between India and England completely belonged to the visitors. They picked wickets at important phases that pegged the hosts back. Ashwin was given the ball early in the day and he did just what his captain asked him to do. Picked up the big fish, Cook, and got Buttler and Stokes in quick time later on. Shami too was substantial with the ball and got a brace for his efforts. Ishant was making the ball move and Yadav who came back strongly after a poor start got a wicket each. England were not bad with the bat but gave up their wickets cheaply. Cook fell to a beauty while the rest fell prey to the visitors. Jennings and Root stitched 72 for the second wicket but two quick breakthroughs post lunch got them on the back foot. Skipper Root and Bairstow then added 104 for the fourth wicket and were taking the game away from the touring side. But the turning point was Root's run out where skipper Kohli's athleticism got him his counterpart. It was all India then as they didn't allow the tail to wag. Had Karthik caught Anderson of the second last ball of the day, India's day would be sweeter. For now, England will come out to bat on Day 2. The tourists will hope to get them out as quickly as possible and get past the total set for them. (

On a good length outside off, Anderson gets an outside edge towards the keeper. Karthik flies to his left but the ball doesn't stick. 19.03 IST: FOUR! Joe Root completes 6000 runs in Test cricket. Edge and races away to the fence. Whaaatttaaa plaayyaaa! Not the best way he would have liked to get it but will take. Root rocks back and looks to cut this ball, gets a thick outside edge and the ball flies past Rahane at first slip to the fence.
19.00 IST: Dawid Malan NOT OUT! Malan comes down the track and that's what saves him. Impact over 3 meters. Ashwin gives this air around off, Malan charges to the ball and looks to play it to the leg side. Cannot get to the pitch of the ball and it goes to the third man fence. The players appeal but the umpire doesn't show any interest. Kohli takes the review. Time for the replays and it shows us the ball was more than 3 meters outisde off which puts the argument to bed.

17.42 IST: A good session for England. 83 runs gathered for the loss of just one wicket. Would have been a touch worse had Ajinkya Rahane held on to the catch which would have dismissed Keaton Jennings. The day started off well for India with Ishant Sharma making use of the conditions on offer and then Ravichandran Ashwin coming on early (As Umesh Yadav was leaking runs) and sending Alastair Cook back to the pavilion. But since then, it's been England all the way as Jennings combined with skipper Joe Root to put the hosts in a good position come the break. The surface is just going to get better and better for batting, so the Indian bowlers will have to get innovative and fast.

Joe Root: We will bat first. It looks a good surface, a bit of cloud cover, there's some moisture which should burn off, looks good to bat. We are ready for this series, the preparations have been good, it's time to deliver now. We are filled with confidence, but this is a new game for the players. The selectors gave us plenty of options for this surface and I am happy with the personnel we have.
Virat Kohli: We were thinking about bowling first. The conditions are overcast, we want to make the most of it. There's always excitement and anticipation, it's a long series and we are well prepared. We are comfortable with our skill-sets. I think we have the bowlers for this pitch, we need to focus on our skills, need to play positively and get the results. Pujara has been left out, KL Rahul will bat at three. Three pace bowlers, Hardik as the all-rounder and Ashwin is the lone spinner.

14.00 IST: Hello and welcome to our live cricket updates of India vs England 1st Test, Day 1 from Edgbaston, Birmingham. The first day should set the tone for an action-packed series which goes on for the next six weeks.
Brief Preview:
India would be driven by the desire to shed the poor travellers' tag, while England would be desperate to arrest the recent slide at home when the two teams clash in a five-match Test series, starting on Wednesday.
The English side will be celebrating its 1000th Test at Edgbaston, and it will be up to world No.1 India to spoil the home party.
India last won a Test series in England in 2007 under Rahul Dravid, and it will be no easy task ahead of the Virat Kohli-led side to duplicate that feat.
Under Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India failed in 2011 and 2014, losing by heavy 4-0 and 3-1 margins, respectively. In fact, India have only won six out of the 57 matches on English soil.
England's Test form coming into this series is also a cause for concern. Since September 2017, England have only won one out of nine Tests against Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan. (Read Full Preview Here)

And that's Stumps on Day 1...
Despite that dropped chance, India walk back to the pavilion with their heads held high. Kohli would believe that it wasn't a bad toss to lose after all, as his pacers in Ishant and Shami put their hands up to deliver a special performance on the day. Although Ishant's one wicket doesn't showcase his superb spell of bowling, he bowled his heart out. Shami was superb in every spell he bowled, Ashwin looked in fine form right from the start and his end figures eventually conveyed the impact he made. Root's inability to convert another fifty hurt England and from thereon, they lost the plot, although there was a mini-resistance towards the end from Curran and Adil.
India are clearly on top and they will look to quickly pick up the final wicket tomorrow. After that, it's over to the batsmen. That's going to be another challenge. We will be there with all of that. Until we meet next time, take care!
Perfect end, not to be
That could have been the perfect end to the first day's play for India had Dinesh Karthik held onto that catch in the final over. Curran fished at one without moving his feet, got a thick edge and DK went flying to his left to fluff the chance. England could have been bowled out and India'd not have needed to bat today. But not to be...

One away from a fifer
Ashwin has been absolutely brilliant today. Pushes this quicker into Broad who is late to get his bat in line. Once he missed it, he was always plumb in front. England nine down now, India will be looking to bowl the hosts out and what a start it would be to this Test series for the tourists.
Luck shines on Ishant, finally
That's a superb delivery cutting into Adil Rashid, he doesn't have any clue about it, brings his bat down but the ball beats it to hit him on the pad. Big appeal for an LBW but the umpire doesn't seem convinced. An ever-confident Kohli opts for the review and he's right, he's right. No bat at all and that was crashing into the stumps.
Mini resistance from Sam Curran and Adil Rashid, have already added 35 runs for the eighth wicket. India would not want England to touch the 300-run mark
And another one for Ashwin!
Ben Stokes is gone for 21! Whisper it softly if you will, but this is shaping up to be India's day. And it has been facilitated by Ravichandran Ashwin. Stokes becomes his third victim of the day, pushing one back to the bowler. Sam Curran was kind enough to step away from the way to allow the spinner to complete a catch. He's not going to want to meet him at the dinner table tonight.
Buttler doesn't scratch around for long
Ashwin in with some action now. Lovely flight, enticing enough to draw Buttler into a defensive prod, rapped on the pads and that was plumb. This should end as India's day unless Stokes decides otherwise. But still, India's from here...
Twin blows, Bairstow is gone now
Poor dismissal but Bairstow had been playing his shots. Short, slightly coming back in and he looks to cut that fiercely through the point area. Big bottom edge and the stumps are rattled. This is a big opening for India to get on top late in the day's play
Root, Tons-not-to-be, Trivia:
11th successive fifty that Root has failed to convert into a 100. His last century was 136 against the Windies last year at this very venue
And again, no hundred for Root
This is a new way to get out, and yet again, he fails to convert a fifty. How often will this happen? Tucks it on the onside and calls for a quick couple, Kohli in with a terrific chase, throws off balance and effects a direct hit at the non-striker's end. Ashwin lets the throw be on its own and the stumps are rattled.
Kohli is very animated in his celebration. Did he do a bat-drop there? Umm, yes! Okay, has the English contingent taken a note of it? Tempers will fly, soon. I tell you, they will fly.
Lucky Bairstow
Although streaky, four boundaries already for England in this brief session of play - four overs to be precise. Bairstow has been edgy, two edges have gone through that gully area. He's somehow managed to stay afloat.
Welcome back for the final session of the first day. Root and Bairstow already have a fifty-run stand, can this be the first hundred-run stand of the series? Shami and Hardik to start the proceedings. Hardik, really? What about the two other frontliners? Rewarded for that decent spell before Tea maybe.

Honours shared in the afternoon session as Root fought back with his fifty after Shami dented England twice at the start. India will look at sustaining the momentum, similar worries for the hosts too. Can they do that in the final session? We shall know soon...

Quite baffling from Kohli
Shami picked up two wickets in that four-over spell and he's been removed now. That's something one didn't expect, he's clearly been the best pacer for India this session. Is the plan to use him in such short bursts? Injury prone, ummm...
Ashwin is getting in some good variations here. Sharp drift, should test the England batsmen here.
Shami's hurting England, quite bad
Sharp delivery as it comes back consistently. Malan gets forward to play through the line, hit around the knee-roll on the half-prod, big appeal and upheld. Understandably, the review is taken but the umpire's call keeps it in India's favour. All of a sudden, two wickets for Shami and England are a little tentative.

Partnership broken
India needed that slice of luck and it comes in the form of Jennings's wicket. Shami angles it in from a back of a length, Jennings tries to fend it off onto the on side, inside edges it between his legs, deflection and rolls onto the stump, just one bail comes off and that's enough.
Root starts iffy after Lunch
Joe Root has looked a little loose since resumption, couple of ugly wafts outside off and has looked a little uneasy against Ishant. However, with everything coming in for Ishant, it is getting quite predictable. Can he get one to straighten? Even that could act as a variation.
And the one that straightens, Root fishes at it with a half-prod, beaten. Close deal.

Well, that's Lunch on Day 1 with Root and Jennings steady in a 57-run stand for the second wicket. Apart from the peach produced by Ashwin and a few questions posed by Ishant and Shami, the England duo have done well to ward off the challenges. By the end of the session, the pair had started to look very comfortable. Can India come back stronger post-Lunch? We'll find out in a bit...
Fifty of the partnership comes off 94 balls
Spotted Hardik loosening up some time back. But looks like he's gone off the field now, he's had some issue with his bowling arm.
Things easing out a bit for Root and Jennings, happy to wait for the bad ball to be put away. Ashwin and Shami not doing a bad job though, pretty much sticking to their plans. Shami's been impressive.
Refreshing change in angle
Change in thought, a refreshing one as Mohammad Shami comes from round the wicket to Jennings. Ishant could have tried the same, maybe he'll take a leaf from Shami's approach later.
After six overs from India's workhorse - Ishant Sharma, comes India's old-ball/reverse swing specialist - Mohammed Shami. All eyes on his fitness, pace and the length of spells.
A pearl from Deepu: The last time an Indian spinner took the first wicket of a series held outside Asia was Anil Kumble (Phil Jacques stumped by MS Dhoni) at the MCG in 2007.
Deepu adds more to it: The last time India did that in a series in England, they went on to win the series 2-0 in 1986 (Tim Robinson dismissed by Maninder Singh at Lord's)

That ONE spinner spells magic; sends Cook back
An absolute peach of a delivery from Ashwin in his first over itself. Tossed up beautifully, Cook is half-forward and looks to fend without accounting for the turn, the slightest of turn and bounce to go past the bat and the knock the off stump over.
Ashwin is thrilled, no wonder.

First drop in the slips for India
The debate has come alive. Jennings edges one in the direction of third and fourth slip, Rahane from fourth intercepts and puts it down. Kohli holds his catching pose for long while looking straight into Rahane's eyes. He feels it was his catch, alas, Rahane didn't think so. Ishant deserved that wicket!
Erratic from Umesh
He hasn't quite hit the straps this morning and in a way is eating into the space created by Ishant and his seam movement. Either too much on the pads or too far outside off, two easy boundaries for Cook in the fifth over.
Pujara's last two County stints have been unproductive, right?

It's been a long standing debate and has divided the cricket fandom into two clear parts - Are India deservedly the No.1 Test side? Ask the Indian fans and they would throw a statistic right in your face that their bowlers picked all 20 wickets in all three Tests in South Africa, and that to many is the standout feature of this Indian side and will be a big factor during this Test series in England.
On the other hand, England haven't been questioned as much in the past as now, for a multitude of factors. Their opening conundrum, inexperience in the pace battery, the surprise factor in Adil Rashid, their current form... phew, that's a lot... are all reasons enough to create a small doubt. But then history is strongly stacked in the hosts' favour - 4-0 in 2011, 3-1 in 2014. That should give them a lot of confidence.
While England have already announced their playing XI, India's can be a big riddle. Dhawan - to play or not to play? Can you leave out Rahul? Should India play two spinners?
