Germany have crashed out of the 2018 World Cup, with the nation exiting at the group stages of the competition for the first time in 80 years.

Sweden's 3-0 victory over Mexico, coupled with Germany's 2-0 defeat against South Korea, means Die Nationalmannschaft's hopes of defending their World Cup trophy have been extinguished before the knockout stage even begins.

Joachim Low's side won the World Cup in Brazil four years ago, but headed to Russia following a year of poor form and and criticism from fans following Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan's meeting with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Germany were shocked in their opening Group F match as they lost 1-0 to Mexico, and looked to be heading out of the competition as they trailed 1-0 to Sweden at half-time in their second match.

Low's men rallied after the break as Marco Reus scored before an injury-time Toni Kroos effort earned a 2-1 win to get their World Cup back on track.

Germany headed into the last game of the group stage in second place ahead of Sweden, and knowing that they would progress if they matched the Swedes' result against Mexico.

Unfortunately for the World Cup holders, they lost 2-0 against South Korea as Sweden earned a surprise 3-0 win over Mexico - a result which sent both themselves and El Tri through at Germany's expense.

The result means Germany have exited the World Cup at the group stages for the first time since 1938.
