Sanju movie review and release live updates: Much awaited Sanjay Dutt biopic Sanju has hit the screens. The film will see Ranbir Kapoor playing Dutt Jr. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the movie also stars Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza, Sonam Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Anushka Sharma and Karishma Tanna among others. Sanju will also feature special appearances by Sanjay Dutt, Tabu, Boman Irani, Sayaji Shinde, Mahesh Manjrekar and Arshad Warsi.

In her movie review, Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta wrote, “Ranbir Kapoor is absolutely believable as Sanjay-Sanju, channeling not just his (Dutt’s) distinctive body language and ‘lehja’, but his internal confusion. Paresh Rawal, playing Sunil Dutt with exemplary restraint, matches Kapoor step for step, even striding ahead in places. Manisha Koirala, as Nargis, makes you wish there was more of her. Jim Sarbh, as the guy-with-the-bad-influence, is very fine and dandy, and Vicky Kaushal as Sanju’s faithful New York-based Gujju friend who teaches him life lessons, is terrific. And Hirani is in top form, getting all his reel characters to riff off the real characters, in the pursuit of a solid, entertaining tale.”

Talking about Sanju, Ranbir Kapoor had said earlier, “In this film, you see him suffer. You see what drugs can do to you or what keeping unlicensed guns can result in. You see the price he had to pay for being irresponsible — towards his life, his relationships. This film is not propaganda; there is merit in the story and a lot to learn from Sanjay Dutt’s mistakes. The film doesn’t shy away from that. It just shows an unknown aspect of him, his vulnerabilities.”

Highlights Very moving story of a father and son, and of two friends: Aamir Aamir watched Sanju at a special screening of the film Aamir Khan was earlier approached to play Sunil Dutt's part in Sanju

"Loved Sanju! Very moving story of a father and son, and of two friends. Ranbir is outstanding and Vicky Kaushal blew my mind! Thank you, Rajkumar Hirani for yet another film which entertain and enriches," tweeted Aamir Khan this evening for the much-awaited film. Ranbir Kapoor's Sanju opened to positive reviews on Friday. The film is a biopic on Sanjay Dutt, with whom Aamir had co-starred in 2014's PK, directed by Mr Hirani. Aamir watched Sanju at a special screening of the film, hosted on Friday. He came with wife Kiran Rao and son Junaid. While Ranbir plays Sanjay Dutt in Sanju, Vicky Kaushal stars as his childhood friend.

Here's Aamir Khan's review for Ranbir Kapoor's Sanju.

Interestingly, Aamir Khan was earlier approached to play Sunil Dutt's part in Sanju but he refused as he was 'unwilling to take up any other role than that of Sanjay Dutt.' "In this film I can't do any other role apart from Sanjay Dutt's, which I can't do because Ranbir is doing," Aamir Khan had said at the media interaction. "I can't come to a set thinking and be looking at Ranbir and be like, hmmm... these should be my lines," he added.

Meanwhile, Sanju was also loved by other celebs like Karan Johar, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Boman Irani and Meghna Gulzar.

In a series of tweets, Karan Johar reviewed the film with a special mention for Vicky Kaushal.

#Sanju is a complex life narrated deftly, in inimitable @RajkumarHirani style.. #RanbirKapoor is talent unimaginable and @vickykaushal09 's Kamles is superlative, in character and portrayal! — Meghna Gulzar (@meghnagulzar) June 29, 2018

Every 3 years this quiet unassuming man gifts us with his 'giant of a baby'. In 15 years this is his 5th. Glad you take your time Raju. Its well worth the wait! Its #Sanju day!!!!!@RajkumarHirani — Boman Irani (@bomanirani) June 29, 2018

In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave Sanju 4 stars out of 5. "Ranbir Kapoor, slipping into the skin of the troubled Bollywood star, pulls out the stops in astonishingly effective ways, subsuming his own personality completely into that of the protagonist. Sanju, as a result, is an entertainer that delivers more than just the superficial goods that one expects from a mass entertainer. It sets a new benchmark for Bollywood biopics. It will be a hard act to follow," he wrote.

The cast of Sanju also includes names like Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala and Jim Sarbh.

Rishi Kapoor tweeted this photo on Sanju day (courtesy chintskap)

Highlights Rishi Kapoor tweeted a throwback pic of Salman and others It is from when they were supporting Sanjay Dutt in 1993 "These people been promoting the film ever since!" wrote Rishi Kapoor

The very outspoken Rishi Kapoor has an unique style of going about things, a glimpse of which we got once again on Sanju day. As Ranbir Kapoor's Sanju hit screens on Friday, his father Rishi jumped to promotional duties of the movie and dug out an old photograph featuring Sanjay Dutt's colleagues Ajay Devgn, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar. In the photo, three out of four of them can be seen posing with posters which bear a photo of Sanjay Dutt and reads: "Sanju, we're with you." The piece of throwback gold appears to be from when Sanjay Dutt was arrested under TADA in 1993 in connection with the Bombay blasts and Bollywood stood strong by the actor's side through his ups and downs.

Rishi Kapoor added a twist to the caption of the photo and wrote: "Thank you! "These people been promoting the film ever since!"

After Sanjay Dutt's initial arrest, he was out on bail in October 1995 but was re-confined in December of the same year. He stepped out on bail, yet again, in April 1997, nine years after which the case came to court. Sanjay Dutt spent 18 months in jail during the trial and he was finally convicted for the illegal possession of weapons by the Supreme Court in 2013, when he was sentenced to five years in Pune's Yerwada Jail. Sanjay Dutt walked out a free man after serving a five-year jail sentence in 2016. Details of Sanjay Dutt's jail-term has been included in his biopic Sanju - glimpses of which are there in plenty in the trailer.

Rishi Kapoor also thanked Shabana Azmi, who recently watched Sanju, for a good review of Ranbir as an actor:

Thank you my dear. You have always encouraged all of us every time but this time it feels better when you talk about Ranbir. I haven't seen the film as yet -will,as soon as I am back https://t.co/bBMSTPL7ad — Rishi Kapoor (@chintskap) June 29, 2018

Meanwhile, Rishi Kapoor is really impressed to watch his son bring alive the controversial life of the superstar on screen. After watching the trailer, this is what he had to say about it: "Rajkumar Hirani has presented Ranbir is the biggest superb thing. The boy has really done well. I am so proud of him. I swear on Neetu and Ranbir, I did not think it was Ranbir, I thought it was Sanjay Dutt."
