Eden Hazard: Real Madrid 'know what to do' to sign me from Chelsea

Eden Hazard wants clarity on Chelsea's plans for next season

Eden Hazard says Real Madrid are aware of what they need to do if they want to sign him from Chelsea.

The Belgium midfielder insists he is "focused on the World Cup" but wants clarity over whether or not Antonio Conte will be in charge at Chelsea before committing to the club on his return from Russia.

Conte has a year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Hazard, 27, says he has "won everything in London, except the Champions League", and admitted he was disappointed in his own performance as Chelsea were knocked out by Barcelona at the last-16 stage last season.

Real Madrid, Champions League winners for the third time in a row, were interested in signing Hazard when Zinedine Zidane was in charge, according to Sky sources.

But the Spanish giants' ongoing interest is unclear now former Spain boss Julen Lopetegui has taken over at the Bernabeu.

"I wait to see whether the [Chelsea] coach will stay or leave," Hazard told L'Equipe. "If I stay it's for the club to be better than last season. I don't want to stay for us to be poorer.

"Real Madrid could interest me, the world knows that. But if tomorrow this club does not want me any longer then we will not speak about it any longer.

"If they want to buy me they know what they need to do. I don't want to go there just for the sake of it. There needs to be a project.

"There is still a project at Chelsea [two years left on his contract]. If I have a good World Cup, things will become easier."

Chelsea winger Eden Hazard has said he would be open to joining Real Madrid this summer and added the Spanish giants are aware of what they need to do to sign him.

As reported by Pete Jenson and Ian Herbert of the Daily Mail, Hazard has long been linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, and while he has not shut the door on the possibility of staying at Stamford Bridge, he said he could be tempted by the switch.

"Real Madrid could be interesting for me as everyone knows," he told L'Equipe (h/t Marca). "They know what they have to do if they want me."

He added: "If it is going to Madrid just to go there then no. I need a project and at Chelsea I have one."

Hazard wants to see the uncertainty over Blues boss Antonio Conte's future resolved before he makes a decision on his own: "To say that I am going would be too easy and so first of all I want to see what will happen at Chelsea ahead of next season. I want to see if the coach stays or not."

Chelsea put up a disappointing title defence in the Premier League last season and only managed to finish fifth, meaning they will not be in the UEFA Champions League next year.

Along with Conte's future at the club being up in the air, Hazard also wants reassurances that the Blues will make efforts to ensure a more successful campaign next season.

"If I stay then it would be because they are going to improve on last season," he said. "I am not going to remain if they are going to be worse."

The Belgian was Chelsea's strongest performer, and he finished the campaign with 17 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.

Hazard's numbers don't always compare that well to those at the top of the game, such as Real's Cristiano Ronaldo—he has scored 20 goals in a season just once in his career and that was at Lille—but he contributes a lot even when he fails to find the net, per Squawka Football:

The winger's biggest strength is his dribbling, and he's electrifying with the ball at his feet:

Real's front line could use freshening up now that Ronaldo is 33 and Benzema, 30, scored just 12 goals in all competitions last season.

Hazard would fit in well there, and he's open to going in the right circumstances, but much will depend on Chelsea's activity in the coming weeks.

Eden Hazard has indicated that he would be open to joining Real Madrid this summer and admits he does not want to stay at Chelsea if they are worse than last season.

Antonio Conte guided Chelsea to victory in the FA Cup but a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League has meant that there will be no Champions League football at Stamford Bridge next season.

Hazard has been on Real Madrid’s radar for several years, while reports claimed that Zinedine Zidane personally pushed for the Belgian to join the club before his resignation.

And the Belgium international has left the door open for a move to the Santiago Bernabeu by inviting Madrid to make an offer.

‘I do not want to talk about transfer right now. I have been asked so many times about that. I am focused on the World Cup,’ Hazard told L’Equipe.

‘But as I said before, I won everything in London except the Champions League. If I’m here in my career, it’s thanks to Chelsea.

It would be too easy to say: I want to leave because I have done everything.

It is for that before everything that I would really like to know what will happen at the club next year.
