Apple’s WWDC 2018 Keynote: What’s Next for the iPhone, iPad and Mac


Four OS updates. One big day.

Announcing upgraded operating systems for iPhone and iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. We’ve packed them with new features and experiences, so with a simple update this fall all your devices will feel more powerful, personal, and fun than ever.

New tools built into iOS 12 help customers understand and take control of the time they spend interacting with their iOS devices. New modes in Do Not Disturb automatically end based on a specified time, location or action, and Do Not Disturb during Bedtime helps people get a better night’s sleep by dimming the display and hiding all notifications on the lock screen until prompted in the morning.

To help reduce interruptions, iOS 12 gives users more options for controlling how notifications are delivered. They can instantly manage notifications to be delivered quietly or turned off completely. Grouped notifications make it easier to view and manage multiple notifications at once.

Screen Time provides users with detailed information and tools to help them better understand and control the time they spend with apps and websites. Daily and weekly Activity Reports show the total time spent in individual apps, usage across categories of apps, how many notifications are received and how often iPhone or iPad are picked up. Screen Time also gives parents access to their child’s Activity Report right from their own iOS devices using Family Sharing in iCloud, and allows them to schedule times to limit when a child’s iOS device can be used, such as during bedtime.


For more than two hours, Apple hammered on stability, redesigns and to even more closely integrate its software made different products — even down to mentions of the Stocks app and Apple TV screensavers. It is all designed to improve how you spend your time on devices.

But a big theme was not spending as much time on devices, accurately predicted by our crack team. That’s the focus of Tripp’s first cut at his WWDC article. Here it is:


Apple is livestreaming the future of the iPhone, Mac and every other product it makes.

The company is holding WWDC, its annual conference for developers, this week. It begins with the major keynote, during which it will reveal updates to the operating systems that power the iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV.

That keynote will be streamed live over the internet – to people whose computers satisfy Apple's requirements.

It could use the announcement to show off new products, too. But the event has been far more mysterious than normal – for reasons that still remain unclear.

All of that suspense will come to an end when Tim Cook takes to the stage in San Jose to reveal what the company has been working on. The event will begin at 10am local time, or 6pm in the UK.

On the same page, you can add the event to your calendar to ensure that you're alerted when it kicks off.

It is important to note that Apple requires people to have the right kit to ensure that the live stream works properly. In practise, that means using an up-to-date Apple product, a PC with Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge, or an Apple TV.

"This stream is best experienced on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using Safari on iOS 10 or later; a Mac using Safari on macOS Sierra 10.12 or later; or a PC using Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge," it writes on its page. "Streaming to Apple TV via AirPlay requires an Apple TV (2nd generation or later) with the latest Apple TV software or tvOS. Other platforms may also be able to access the stream using recent versions of Chrome or Firefox (MSE, H.264, and AAC required)."

Owners of the Apple TV do not need to navigate to that website to watch the event. Instead, an "Apple Events" app should already have arrived on the home screen – opening that before the event should allow the live stream to begin.
