Why Meghan Markle’s wedding dress probably cost much less than Kate Middleton’s

Not sure if you've heard yet or not, but there's a small, pretty low-key wedding going down in London today as Prince Harry marries Meghan Markle.

While the most monumental fashion moment will of course be whichever gown the bride wears to walk down the aisle, let's also take some time to appreciate Kate Middleton's look for the big royal wedding. The Duchess of Cambridge arrived to St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle wearing a Alexander McQueen dress and Philip Treacy hat. And while at first glance, her look appeared white, it's actually pale yellow.

Kate has actually already worn this specific McQueen dress not once, but twice before—to both Princess Charlotte's christening and to Queen Elizabeth II's birthday party.

Oh, and did we mention that she just gave birth less than a month ago? Yes:Less. Than. A. Month. Ago. Harry and Meghan's wedding marks Kate's first major public appearance since she and Prince William welcomed their third child, Prince Louis, on April 23.

Sticking to her signature style—and obviously trying not to upstage Meghan—Kate was the perfect balance of elegance and sophistication in the monochromatic look. As she entered the church, she was accompanied by her two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who will be serving in the wedding as a page boy and bridesmaid, respectively.

Just last year, Kate had another stylish wedding guest moment as she attended the ceremony of her sister Pippa Middleton and James Matthews. For the occasion, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a pale pink Alexander McQueen dress with a matching rose-embellished fascinator. She topped off the ensemble with a pair of classic suede pumps—which have become a footwear staple for the royal.

One thing's for sure: whether she's the bride herself or simply a guest, Kate Middleton has fully mastered the art of wedding style.

After months and months of anticipation, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially tied the knot at Windsor Castle today in one of the most monumental royal weddings of the century.

For her special day, the bride wore a stunning white Givenchy gown designed by Clare Waight Keller, a British designer who used to helm the fashion house Chloé. But how did her wedding dress compare to that of new sister-in-law, Kate Middleton?

For her wedding to Prince William back in 2011, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a beautiful lace Alexander McQueen gown designed by Sarah Burton, the fashion house's creative director. The iconic dress featured long lace sleeves, a v-neckline and an epic train. The historic bridal look went on to inspire countless wedding dresses to come—both in real life and on the runways—and continues to do so to this day.

In fact, Kate's wedding dress is still so impactful that H&M just designed an affordable version of it that retails for $299. Will Meghan's wedding gown have a similar effect?

Taking more of a minimal and refined route, Meghan's bridal gown featured a boat neckline bodice, long sleeves and a sheer cascading veil adorned with lace trim.

As for accessories, Kate borrowed Queen Elizabeth II's Cartier Halo Scroll tiara on her big day. The sparkling piece, which featured nearly 1,000 diamonds, was a gift to the Queen on her 18th birthday from her mother—and was originally purchased by King George VI as an anniversary gift to his wife in 1936.

For her tiara moment, however, Meghan wore Queen Mary’s diamond filigree tiara.

Though they each had their own individual take on bridal style, both Kate and Meghan prove you don't have to be born into royalty to look the part on your big day (but marrying into it does help, of course 😉).

What was Kate Middleton's wedding dress and did it cost more than Meghan's?

Kate Middleton wore a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen gown when she tied the knot with Prince William in 2011.

Like Meghan's dress it also had long sleeves but was more embellished with a lace design pattern.

We don't yet know how much Meghan's dress cost but Royal expert Kate Nicholl revealed that Meghan would go for a dress with a far more modest price tag than Kate’s.

Kate explained to Entertainment Tonight: “There have been reports that [Meghan’s] considering spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on a wedding dress. I think that’s incredibly unlikely.

“Kate Middleton's dress is rumoured to have cost £250,000. It was her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, who paid for that bill.

“I think it is very unlikely that Meghan would spend more than that and in doing so try and upstage a future queen.

"I don’t think she's going to want to get royal life off to a start where she's criticised for spending something like £400,000 on a wedding dress.”
