Manchester United were rocked 1-0 by the Seagulls on the south coast.

A Pascal Gross goal, which crossed the line only after goal-line technology had confirmed it, was enough for Brighton to win the game.

It means they cannot be relegated.

As for United, Jose Mourinho will no doubt be fuming after his side wasted chances to win the game.

Mourinho said after the game: "It was not good enough. The players that replaced others did not perform at a good level and when individuals do that it is difficult for the team to play well. Maybe now you will not ask me why A, B and C do not play so much.

"I knew what was going to happen and I told them, but that is what we got.

"The attitude from the first minute and especially in the first half, they had more appetite. I did not succeed in persuading my players that getting four more points is important. it is for me, but perhaps not for them.

"I wouldn't say disappointed. I know them. I thought that the possibility to start the game and give reason would give them something.

"You have the answer now when you ask 'why always Lukaku?'. We are probably not as good as people think we are individually."

Manchester United still need four points to secure second place in the Premier League after slipping to defeat against Chris Hughton's Brighton.

It was an awful performance from Jose Mourinho's side who were deservedly beaten on the south coast thanks to a second half Pascal Gross goal.

Mourinho made six changes to the side that beat Arsenal with the likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford given a chance to stake a claim for a place in the starting XI for the FA Cup final later in the month. But after tonight's display Mourinho's team selection has just become a lot easier.

United now have games against West Ham and Watford left in the league where they will be hoping for better performances to gain some momentum ahead of the huge game against Chelsea
