Spanish champions Barcelona ended their campaign with a 1-0 home win over Real Sociedad and paid an emotional farewell to departing captain Andres Iniesta. (1:09)

Andres Iniesta's final Barcelona appearance ended in victory on an emotional evening at the Nou Camp.

La Liga champions Barca, who lost their unbeaten record in a 5-4 loss at Levante last week, responded with a 28th win of the season, defeating Real Sociedad 1-0.

Former Liverpool forward Philippe Coutinho, scorer of a hat trick a week ago, netted the only goal on a night which belonged to Iniesta.

The Spain playmaker was substituted after 81 minutes and received a rapturous reception as he bade farewell to the stage he has graced for so long and so successfully.

The 34-year-old will leave the club this summer 22 years after joining their academy, having won 32 major honours including four Champions League titles and nine La Liga titles. He took his time to depart, embracing teammates and soaking in the adoration.

There were 84,168 spectators at the Nou Camp and prior to kick-off a mosaic was formed, turning Iniesta's number eight on its side to form the infinity symbol.

Barca were almost caught out early on as Adnan Januzaj's cross was met by Willian Jose. The Brazilian sent a free header into the grateful arms of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The Barca goalkeeper then turned a Januzaj shot around the post for a corner.

The hosts slowly seized control of the game, but the final ball was lacking.

A set-piece fell for Gerard Pique, but the defender could not strike it cleanly.

Ivan Rakitic headed wide from a Ousmane Dembele cross and Luis Suarez next fired just off target.

Barcelona took the lead 10 minutes into the second half with a fine strike from Coutinho.

The Brazilian drove through the left channel, cut back on to his right foot, wrong-footing two defenders. He then curled the ball in off the far post.

Iniesta was hoping to add his name to the scoresheet, but he had the ball stolen off him as he prepared to shoot.

And soon afterwards Coutinho was replaced by Lionel Messi.

Messi tried to play in Denis Suarez, but he shot wide with Luis Suarez in a good position.

Iniesta then said his farewells as Paco Alcacer came on in his place.

With tears in his eyes, the man who was given a contract for life just last October, concluded his illustrious spell as a Barca player.

La Liga champions Barcelona finished the season on a high with a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in what was a very exciting match at Camp Nou. Both teams had a number of good chances, and Philippe Coutinho was the man to score the winner. But the highlight of the night was Andrés Iniesta, who played for Barça one last time and had a very emotional farewell.

FIRST HALF

The first 45 minutes were a lot of fun. Both teams had nothing to play for, and both teams have attacking tendencies, so both teams attacked A LOT. Neither defense was particularly bad in the first half, but they still allowed quite a lot of space and we got a good bit of chances.

La Real were more dangerous early on, with Willian José and Adnan Januzaj looking very aggressive and forcing Ter Stegen into some good saves. Ousmane Dembélé was the best Barça player on the pitch and created a lot of chances on the right wing, with a beautiful cross for a Ivan Rakitic header that went just wide being the highlight.

Despite the excitement we saw no goals at halftime, but surely that would change in the final period.

SECOND HALF

The pace of the game dropped quite noticeably to start the second half, and it seemed like the teams (especially Sociedad) were a little tired from running like crazy people in the first 45 minutes. A slower tempo favored Barça, who began dominating midfield and gaining a lot of control of the action.

And then Philippe Coutinho scored his best goal as a Barça player yet, and the champions had the lead. It’s really hard to describe Coutinho’s strike, so I won’t even try. Barça looked poised to score another goal and kill the game, but Sociedad managed to get more of the ball and go forward themselves, and the final minutes were quite nervous for Barça fans.

But in the 80th minute, Andrés Iniesta was called for a substitution, and the game was made irrelevant as the legend made one final walk to the touchline as a Barça player. With tears in his eyes, as players from both sides and the referee gave him their best wishes. The noise from the crowd was incredible, and it was as beautiful a moment as we thought it would be.

Back to the game, Barça did a very good job of keeping the ball as far away from their box as they could. Sociedad had no real chances, and the season ended in the most Valverde way possible: with a 1-0 win.
