Manjakan Fans, TWICE Comeback Lewat Album 'What is Love'

K-pop girl group TWICE returned with their fifth EP What Is Love? today, promoted with a titular single that draws its inspiration from famous film moments.

Bright in its retro electro-pop styling, "What Is Love?" opens with a clapping beat and the girl group’s telltale declaration of their name. It sprinkles digital quirks, sparkling chimes, and staccato'd percussion over the bubblegum melody, as the nonet sing about their desire to discover the elusive feeling that they’ve learned about through fictional depictions of what love is.

With an addictive choral hook, much like their past hits, the song quickly shot to the top of Korean music charts.Within six hours of its release, the accompanying music video also saw over 5 million views on YouTube.

Inspired by famous movies, including Ghost, The Princess Diaries, and Pulp Fiction, the music video draws on the opening lines of the single -- "Every day in a movie, in a book, or in a drama, I feel love I learn about love/ My heart keeps beating as if it's my own story” -- and depicts the women exploring the question of “What Is Love?” by recreating iconic cinematic scenes: Nayeon undergoes a makeover a la Princess Mia; Jeongyeon and Sana recreate the pottery wheel scene of Ghost; Dahyun sneaks headphones on Mina as in the French film La Boum; Sana and Tzuyu have a dance off as in Pulp Fiction; Momo and Tzuyu imitate La La Land; Tzuyu and Jeongyeon recreate the famous fish tank scene of Romeo + Juliet; Jihyo & Jeongyeon reenact an emotive school scene from the Japanese film Love Letter, Chaeyoung imitates Léon: The Professional, and Dahyun, in blatant product placement, poses as a model for Acuvue Define contacts.

The theatrically inspired scenes are interspersed with several group scenes that feature the members of TWICE at a sleepover watching the movies, and dancing in romantic, tea-length cocktail dresses and ‘90s-inspired outfits, as they perform the question mark-creating dance moves.

What Is Love features five songs aside from the single, one of which, "Stuck," is only available on the physical album. "What Is Love?" was co-written by J.Y. Park, the head of TWICE's label JYP Entertainment, while the effusive "Sweet Talker" features lyrics written by members Jeongyeon and Chaeyoung, and Jihyo penned the verses of the swing-pop "Ho!"

One of the most popular girl groups around, TWICE has dominated the K-pop scene since their since their first single "Like Ooh-Ahh" in 2015, which debuted at No. 6 on the World Digital Song Sales chart. Each of their following songs, including Japanese singles, have charted within the top 10 of that chart, and all of their Korean albums have charted on the World Albums chart.
