Liverpool draw Manchester City in Champions League quarter-finals

The last two English teams in the Champions League will play each other in the quarter-finals, while Real Madrid were paired with Juventus

Whatever the forthcoming double-header brings, few anticipate defensive, cagey affairs.

“The good thing is we know more about Manchester City than we could know about any other team we could have faced,” said Klopp.

“From our point of view we played one and a quarter really good games until we were a man down. City knows that as well. It is not that they thought we want to have Liverpool, so that is all good. One thing is sure it will be two very intense games.

“When you think about the draw and you get the team around the corner where you can go by bus, you don’t want it. Everybody is a little like this. They didn’t want us. We all know about that. Our record is not too bad against City. We are not the team they love to play constantly, let me say it like this.

“City is obviously one of the strongest teams in the competition but we want to go to the next round so it is not our job to decide how we go there , to take this easy team which I didn’t find and then another one and then you are in a final. And in the final for sure you have to play whichever world class team and now we have to play a world class team in the quarter-finals.”

Manchester City romped to a 5-0 home win during September, with Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane both scoring twice after Sadio Mane had been sent off.

Liverpool, though, gained revenge at Anfield in January when they inflicted what so far has been the only Premier League defeat for City, who were beaten 4-3 with two late goals adding some respectability to the final scoreline.

Elsewhere in Friday's quarter-final draw, holders Real Madrid were handed a tie against Italian giants Juventus, who beat Tottenham in the last round.
