INDIA QUALIFY FOR THE FINAL! Bangladesh were still in with a chance after the 18th over after having taken Siraj for 16 runs, requiring 33 from 12. But Shardul Thakur's stellar penultimate over which gave away only 5 runs, put India in the driver's seat with 28 required off the last. It was far too much, even for a defiant Mushfiqur, who ended up unbeaten on on 72 as India picked up a 17-run win following restricting Bangladesh to 159/6.
Was another poor day for Siraj in the field who went for over 50 once again. Short, wide, lacking pace, he had all the constituents for a poor day. Sundar however, was mighty impressive in the powerplay and finished with figures of 3 for 22. An all-round clinical effort saw India extend their unbeaten streak over Bangladesh in the format to 7.
India sit happy at the top of the table with three wins. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will face-off on Friday next. Thank you for your company today. Do join us then.
Even if Bangladesh beat India tonite and SL beat Bang in next game.. India has now qualfied to the final on NRR!#NidahasTrophy2018 #IndvBan — Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) March 14, 2018
Highest scores for Bangladesh batsman vs India:
62* MUSHFIQUR RAHIM
44 Anamul Haque, Mirpur, 2014
44 Sabbir Rahman, Mirpur, 2016
41 Junaid Siddique, Trentbridge, 2009 #BANvIND — Cricbuzz (@cricbuzz) March 14, 2018
NO-BALL AND MISSED CHANCE: Siraj first bowls a full-toss which is above waist high. Rahim's miscue is skied to the bowler. The non-striker was halfway down the pitch. Siraj throws it back, but misses. He had all the time in the world to go back and take the stumps off. Not going well for Siraj.
50+ scores in successive T20I inngs for BAN: Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan (twice), MUSHFIQUR RAHIM
MUSHFIQUR HAS ANOTHER 50! Second on the trot for Mushfiqur.
AND THE STAND IS BROKEN! Shardul Thakur strikes to end the stand that had breathed some life into the Bangladesh chase. You miss, I hit, says the commentator. Sabbir Rahman loses his stumps with the slower one. Ends a 65-run stand.
FIGHTING BACK! Mushfiqur and Sabbir have stitched up a very very handy partnership at a time when Bangladesh needed some stability after those early jolts. Took only 35 balls.
In a small private ceremony a few days back, I committed to Washington Sundar for life. — Jarrod Kimber (@ajarrodkimber) March 14, 2018
SKIPPER DEPARTS: Mahmudullah caught by KL on the fence. Chahal with the wicket off a short one. A pull towards deep mid-wicket goes straight into the hands of the fielder as Bangladesh continue to lose wickets.
AND ANOTHER: Three for Sundar! Tamim misses the lap sweep, only to find the ball crashing into his stumps!
Washington Sundar has been stunning in all matches. Early wickets and keeping it tight. #NidahasTrophy2018 — Anand Vasu (@anandvasu) March 14, 2018
DOUBLE STRIKE: Sundar making inroads as easy as they come. Superb from the youngster. Soumya Sarkar gets down on a knee and tries to slog-sweep across the line. Misses as the ball crashes into the stumps. Sundar with his second in as many overs!
The short ball tactic didn't work against Tamim Iqbal obviously but before this game, Shardul Thakur had bowled 24 bouncers in this series, conceded just 31 runs (run-rate of 7.75) & picked up a couple of wickets.#IndvBan #NidahasTrophy — The Cricket Prof. (@CricProf) March 14, 2018
TAMIM COUNTERATTACKS: After Das's wicket, Tamim counter-attacks with a 19-run over! Superb from the opener. Once again, Shardul's start is all over the place.
WICKET!! Gets his wicket in that first over either way. Ad it is Das. This time, Karthik very quick behind the stumps after the batsman charges down the track.
REVIEW: Washington is asking questions from ball one! Huge appeal turned down by the umpire. India decide to review it. No bat, but pitching waaay outside off. Not out!
The decision to drop Jaidev Unadkat is an interesting one given left-arm seamers concede just 5.94 runs per over to Tamim Iqbal in T20Is. The next most economical type of bowlers are right-arm seamers (6.94 runs an over).#IndvBan #NidahasTrophy — The Cricket Prof. (@CricProf) March 14, 2018
Siraj to kickstart proceedings for India. Tamim Iqbal and Das in the middle.
India finish with 176: Excellent from Rubel. Only four runs off that last over. And India would've felt like they've fallen 20 short after that 21-run over. Only 15 came off the last two with Rohit Sharma being run-out for 89 off the last ball. Bangladesh will have to start well to chase this down. Join us in a bit for the chase.
RAINA out for 47: Raina departs trying the big shot. Raina flicked it, was hit well but didn't get the required elevation. Soumya Sarkar takes a good catch after having run across from deep-midwicket. Good catch!
Most sixes for India in T20 Internationals:
75 ROHIT SHARMA
74 Yuvraj
54 S Raina
46 MS Dhoni
41 V Kohli#INDvBAN #NidahasTrophy — Deepu Narayanan (@deeputalks) March 14, 2018
Rohit and Raina accelerating now. India's run-rate has upped too. As many as 21 off that Abu Hider over - the 18th! Can India get 200?
FIFTY RUNS! Raina and Rohit add 50 for the second wicket. Raina leading the stand with a 19-ball 30. Great stand this, after Dhawan's wicket. Good counterattack to suppress the momentum of the wicket.
Misfield! The Fizz is sloppy on the boundary, leaving Rubel fuming. What should've been one run, turns out to be four. A well-directed bouncer from the bowler was top-edged fine, but Mustafizur went all around it, but couldn't stop it.
FIFTY FOR ROHIT! Finally a substantial score this series. Hits form at the right time. 13th in the format.
India have scored 8.43 runs per over while going down the pitch in this series which is the lowest among the three teams. Their overall run-rate while going down the pitch since January 2016 is more than 10 an over.#IndvBan #NidahasTrophy — The Cricket Prof. (@CricProf) March 14, 2018
MIDDLE STUMP UPROOTED! Bowled him! Dhawan departs for 35 with 70 on the board. Rubel gets him an outswinging yorker which breached his defences and crashed into the stumps.
To be honest, Hider has made a better start than Taskin Ahmed, the bowler he has replaced in this game. — Mohammad Isam (@Isam84) March 14, 2018
"Not as windy that the fielder can complain about it swerving a lot in the skies. He never seemed to be in a position to take it. His primary role I understand is that of a wicketkeeper, no doubt fielding at the boundary edge or anywhere else for that matter will be tricky for him," says our correspondent Shirshendu.
Now Dhawan gets away with a mis-hit. Liton Das misjudges on the midwicket fence, comes forward then back and dives. #NidahasTrophy2018 #NidahasTrophy — Anand Vasu (@anandvasu) March 14, 2018
MAKES A MESS: Liton Das puts down Dhawan. Went up high in the air. Das is back on the fence, puts in a dive, but not at the right time after gone back and forth. What's worse? Goes to the boundary for a 4. Luck with the openers who have added over 50 runs for the first wicket.
Most partnership runs for first wicket in T20Is:
1108 Warner - Watson
876 ROHIT - DHAWAN *
870 Guptill - Williamson
763 Porterfield - Stirling#NidahasTrophy #BANvIND — Cricbuzz (@cricbuzz) March 14, 2018
Rohit now gets it right. Bye bye Mehedi as that lands in the stands behind midwicket #NidahasTrophy2018 #NidahasTrophy — Anand Vasu (@anandvasu) March 14, 2018
That lucky reprieve has aided Rohit in getting going. Now on 24, he has his highest score for the tournament.
India were 21/0 in 3.5 overs before that Shikhar Dhawan six and it was about to become their lowest T20I score in the first four overs against Bangladesh without a wicket lost. Their previous lowest was 23/0.#IndvBan #NidahasTrophy — The Cricket Prof. (@CricProf) March 14, 2018
LUCKY SHARMA! Rohit mistimes one after getting one on the toe-end of the bat. A running Abu Hider puts in a dive but to no avail.
Game time!
"Understandably, Taskin goes out after his poor show in the first two games," says Shirshendu from Colombo.
Playing XIs:
India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Lokesh Rahul, Suresh Raina, Manish Pandey, Dinesh Karthik(w), Vijay Shankar, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal
Bangladesh (Playing XI): Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Liton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Mahmudullah(c), Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan, Rubel Hossain, Abu Hider Rony, Mustafizur Rahman, Nazmul Islam
TOSS TIME: Bangladesh win toss, will bowl first. One change for them: Taskin out, Abu Hider in.
One for India as well: Siraj in for Unadkat.
A win for India gets them to the final. Bottom-of-the-table Bangladesh need a win desperately to stay in the tournament with the Sri Lankan challenge next.
Hello and welcome to Game 5 of the Nidahas Trophy between Bangladesh and India in Colombo. Defying bad weather, it's been a rather pleasant day, says our correspondent Shirshendu Roy.
Teams in the middle going about their practice.
STAT: Bangladesh have never beaten India in a T20I - 6 out of 6 for India.

Jaffer ton powers Vidarbha on Day 1

Wasim Jaffer's unbeaten 113, along with half-centuries from Faiz Fazal and Sanjay Ramaswamy, put Vidarbha in a good position at the end of Day 1 of the Irani Cup clash at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpuron Wednesday(March 14). Vidarbha's top order, which had played a pivotal role in their Ranji Trophy triumph, came good again as the hosts ended Day 1 on 289 for 2.
Before Jaffer took centre stage, it was Vidarbha's in-form pair of Ramaswamy and Fazal who gave their side a strong platform after opting to bat. On a pitch that wasn't providing much assistance to the bowlers, Ramaswamy and Fazal ensured that they capitalised as they put on a century partnership. However, both batsmen would rue the fact that they could not go on and make sizeable contributions, with the pair falling on the brink of the lunch and tea breaks respectively.
Ramaswamy, who registered a patient half-century - his sixth fifty-plus score of the season - flicked a straight delivery from Jayant Yadav to short-midwicket, which ended an opening stand worth 101. Fazal then crossed fifty for the seventh time in the current first-class season and with Jaffer also coming good with the bat again as Rest of India's (RoI) toil continued.
Handling the bowlers with ease, Jaffer scored at a good rate compared to his partner as he became the third player to score fifty-plus in the innings. During the process, he also joined Gundappa Vishwanath as the only two players with six successive fifty-plus scores in the Irani Cup. Fazal, meanwhile, was happy to play a more sedate role in the second century stand of the innings.
Vidarbha's skipper closed in on his sixth first-class ton of the season before R Ashwin struck, taking until his 22nd over to pick up his first wicket. The spinner had bowled leg-breaks without much success, although he did trouble the left-handed Fazal with his offspin. He eventually reaped the reward as Fazal failed in his attempt to play a slog sweep and had to depart 11 short of a three-figure score, of what turned out to be the final ball before Tea.
Despite the wicket just before the break, RoI's bowlers had more hard work in store for the final session, having to contend with the experienced pair of Jaffer and Ganesh Satish. For Jaffer, the innings was just another day in the office and the spin-heavy RoI attack was hardly any trouble as the the 40-year-old used his feet well against Ashwin, Shahbaz Nadeem and Jayant en route his 53rd hundred in first-class cricket.
Satish provided good support to Jaffer as they raised a half-century stand to pile on the agony for RoI. To make matters worse, Nadeem had overstepped when Satish chipped the ball to midwicket off the inside half of his bat. The batsman, who was on his way back, was asked to wait by the umpires who confirmed that the bowler had crossed the line after referring to replays. Profiting from the reprieve, Satish remained unbeaten at stumps along with Jaffer, with the third-wicket association having yielded 71.
Brief scores: Vidarbha 289/2 (Wasim Jaffer 113*, Faiz Fazal 89, Sanjay Ramaswamy 53; R Ashwin 1-66) vs Rest of India.

Rohit, Sundar star as India storm into final

Rohit Sharma had digressed a fair bit at the toss when he was asked about the changes made to the Indian side on Wednesday (March 14). "No concerns about my own form. Spending more time is important; not playing too many shots early on. For me, the team performance matters the most," said Rohit, before having to be reminded of mentioning the changes.
True to his word, he didn't play too many shots at the start in the fifth game of the Nidahas Trophy 2018 against Bangladesh, taking his time to settle in at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The result of that though, was Sharma finishing 11 short of a century as he led his side to 176 for 3 - which proved to be enough as Bangladesh were restricted to 159 for 6. India sealed their spot in the final with a 17-run win, and extended their unbeaten streak in the format against Bangladesh to seven games.
Rohit was handed a life, albeit off a very tough chance, in the third over when on 7, after Abu Hider at mid-on couldn't time his div. The in-form Shikhar Dhawan, on the other hand, played his strokes and took on the bowlers, keeping the scoreboard ticking, while Rohit continued to find his feet. The Indian captain was 10 off 15 before Mehidy Hasan was dispatched over the deep mid-wicket ropes as he started to loosen up even with the ball gripping with a bit of turn, making it tough for the batsmen to play their shots. Dhawan, meanwhile, was dropped by Liton Das as India's opening pair brought up the fifty-run stand in the seventh over.
Dhawan, however, fell at the halfway stage after his middle stump was uprooted by an outswinging yorker from Rubel Hossain. Suresh Raina joined Rohit for a quickfire stand which fetched India 102 runs before the former fell for a brilliant 47 off 30. During the course of the stand though, Rohit had found his feet and let loose, smashing five sixes and as many fours in his 61-ball stay in the middle that fetched him 89, returning to form that had eluded him all series. Despite his brilliance, India would've felt they were 15 short at least after.
However, Bangladesh were undone upfront by an excellent spell from Washington Sundar. In the PowerPlay, he gave away 18 runs in three overs, striking in each of them to send back Bangladesh's top order with some sharp bowling at the stumps. With their backs against the wall, Mushfiqur Rahim and Sabbir Rahman came together to defy the Indian bowlers' attack with a very astute partnership with excellent match awareness to breathe life back into Bangladesh's chase.
The Indian bowlers took the pace off, bowling at different lines and lengths to force Bangladesh's batsmen to think on their feet. The fifth-wicket stand fetched Bangladesh 65 off 48 balls before Sabbir was castled after missing a slower ball from Shardul Thakur, who was taken apart for 19 by Tamim Iqbal (27) in his opening over. Thakur, though, came back strongly to first, end the vital stand that kept Bangladesh in the chase, and then bowled a stellar penultimate over studded with knuckle balls, conceding only five runs, leaving Bangladesh with 28 to get in the last.
Mushfiqur scored his second half-century on the trot, and kept Bangladesh in the game until the end. In what was another forgettable day for Mohammad Siraj, he gave away 50 from four overs, conceding the most runs after three T20Is (131). He bowled the final over in which he gave away 10 runs, even as Mushfiqur fought right until the end remaining unbeaten on 72 off 55 balls - the first-ever fifty by a Bangladesh batsman against India in T20Is.
Brief scores: India 176/3 in 20 overs (Rohit Sharma 89, Shikhar Dhawan 35, Suresh Raina 47; Rubel Hossain 2-27) beat Bangladesh 159/6 in 20 overs (Mushfiqur Rahim 72*, Sabbir Rahman 27; Washington Sundar 3-22) by 17 runs.
