Against the Oranje England were far from brilliant. But, dare it be said ahead of the World Cup, there are encouraging signs of hope in this victory against an admittedly poor Holland who did not even qualify for Russia. It is easy to see why.
Jesse Lingard scored the goal, his first for his country, and England’s first in 300 minutes of football to enhance his chances and although this was a low-key affair, manager Gareth Southgate will be pleased at the defensive shape of his team and the pace going forward. England had an intent and a purpose even if they could not always execute it.
In truth Southgate will hope that just a handful of this team will line up against Tunisia in Volgograd for their opening group game on June 18. Only Raheem Sterling, John Stones and Kyle Walker – who was played in a new position - are certain starters and all impressed along with probably Jordan Henderson while Jordan Pickford was the ball-playing goalkeeper the manager wants.
But despite Lingard’s strike, despite England’s speed, goals and creativity remain a significant problem and so much hangs on the hoped for return of Harry Kane from injury. Without him England will really have to try to grind it out and Southgate will therefore be delighted with three clean sheets from friendlies against Germany, Brazil and now Holland since they secured qualification for Russia.
This was also England’s first win against Holland since Euro 96 and at their eighth attempt – all friendlies – although this was certainly the weakest Dutch team they have faced in the intervening years making any assessment even harder to make.
