In the history of various hapless England teams over the years there have been times when the intervention of someone with a better view of the action might have made a difference to some dismal outcomes, although when the future of refereeing finally arrived it brought bad news.

The first ever video assistant referee intervention in an England match led to the penalty that Italy equalised from, the first goal that Gareth Southgate’s team had conceded in ten hours and 24 minutes of football going back seven games.

It was the right decision too, the German referee Deniz Aytekin going to the pitch-side monitor to review a run by substitute Federico Chiesa which was ended by James Tarkowski bringing a foot down on top of his Italian opponent’s boot.

It would have been a sixth successive clean sheet with the last goal dating all the way back to Stanislav Lobotka’s third minute strike for Slovakia in a World Cup qualifier in September last year.

Instead Lorenzo Insigne dispatched a penalty past Jack Butland and Italy just about got the reward for a second half performance which was an improvement on their first half efforts.

Lewis Cook's England debut against Italy gave his grandfather 17,000 reasons to celebrate as a four-year-old £500 bet paid dividends.

Trevor Burlingham staked the sizeable wager on his grandson to win a senior England cap before his 26th birthday when then 18-year-old Cook was breaking through the ranks at Leeds United in 2014.

Burlingham placed the cash bet in his local William Hill in Tadcaster, north Yorkshire and was offered odds of 33/1.

The Bournemouth midfielder was introduced after 71 minutes by Gareth Southgate in England's 1-1 friendly draw with Italy at Wembley, replacing Jesse Lingard.

William Hill say it is their biggest payout of this type since a £125,000 win for Peter Edwards when grandson Harry Wilson made his Wales debut in 2013. Edwards placed the bet when Wilson was just 18-months-old at odds of 2,500/1.
