Have schools been closed due to snow in the UK?

The majority of schools across the UK opened their doors but with conditions forecast to get chillier the prospect is looking more likely later in the week – so keep a close eye out on your child's school.

A fresh wave of snow arrived today and tonight is no different with snow showers expected to affect eastern and southeastern areas particularly.

Because of this, yellow weather warning for snow is in place for these regions was set in place from 4:00pm until 11:55pm on Monday night.

Later at night, a band of heavy snow is forecast to move into Scotland and Northern England, although some areas, particularly in the west, will be clear and frosty.

On Tuesday, amber warnings for snow are in place in the north-east and the south-east lasting for the whole morning.

You can check on your child's school by entering the postcode here.

For future snowfalls, check the links below to find out if schools in the North East of England and Scotland have been impacted by the weather.

Where to check if your school is closed:

When was the last time UK schools were closed because of snow?

In December, 2017, Britain's worst snowstorm in four years led to nearly 3,000 schools shutting out of concern for staff and children's welfare.

Storm Caroline left an Arctic air flow in its wake, with temperatures plunging across the UK and up to four inches of snow heavily obstructing roads.

Schools which shut included more than 500 in the east of England and more than 200 each in Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.

Birmingham was the worst hit city with around 400 schools closing.

What should you do if your kids can’t go to school?

Your options will be limited if you suddenly find yourself lumbered with having to take care of your kids for the day.

Try and contact your work as early as possible to explain the situation.

A reasonable boss shouldn’t penalise you but they might ask you to work from home if you possibly can.

If not, they might be able to make you take unpaid leave, holiday days or work flexible hours to make up time.

It's worth checking your contract or staff handbook to see if it includes anything about extreme weather or childcare emergencies.

You are entitled to take reasonable amounts of time off work if your childcare arrangements are unexpectedly disrupted – but this could take the form of unpaid leave.

Here's how cold it needs to be before your kids can be sent home from school.

There’s plenty of white stuff currently hitting the UK and for some school kids, so much snow means not going to school.

Many schools across the country have closed due to the adverse weather – but is your or your child’s school one of them?

To find out, you can search the postcode of the school at this site.

Alternatively you can take a look at which schools are closing by area:

This is the second time in two months that schools have opted to close due to an icy chill.

In December 2017, 3,000 schools closed when the UK’s worst snow storm in four years hit – and Birmingham was the worst affected, with 400 closures.

If you have to look after your children today it’s worst asking your boss if you can take emergency unpaid leave, holiday or if you could work from home.
