Chris Brown attends the Givenchy show as part of the Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Fall/Winter 2016/2017 on March 6, 2016 in Paris, France.

Chris Brown and Rihanna may no longer be an item, but the "Loyal" singer clearly still cares about his ex. Almost as soon as RiRi's 30th birthday began Tuesday (Feb. 20), Brown shared a happy birthday message to her on his Instagram.

With the simple caption of “HAPPY BIRTHDAY @badgalriri,” the picture seems to be a childhood photo of the Barbados-born singer.

The two started dating in 2008, though they met sometime around 2005 when they were both still teenagers. Their relationship took a violent turn in 2009 when Brown assaulted Rihanna in a rented car on the eve of that year's Grammy Awards following Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party.

In his 2017 documentary, Chris Brown: Welcome to My Life, Brown opened up about that night, saying it stemmed from a disagreement about his past relationships, and ended in him violently hitting her “with a closed fist” while driving. A month later, Brown was charged with felony assault and making criminal threats and in June 2009 he pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge and accepted a plea deal that included five years probation, six months of community service and one year of mandatory domestic violence counseling; a judge also instituted a five-year restraining order that required Brown to say at least 50 yards away from Rihanna at all time.

The two briefly got back together sometime around 2012, putting out the aptly named duet “Nobody’s Business” on Rihanna’s LP Unapologetic.

In an interview with Billboard in 2014, Brown said the incident is something people bring up to hold his career back: “As long as you’re doing something good, people will always bring up old stuff or negative stuff because they don’t want you to surpass a certain level or elevate. But as long as you have your head on straight, it shouldn’t matter what people want to say.”

As for what Instagram commenters thought of the birthday post, thoughts ranged from supportive hardcore fans still shipping Rihanna and CB, asking “can ya’ll just get back together" to confusion and anger from those who are still affected by the incident: “What is your purpose? Really?”

Twitter had a similar mixed bag of reactions. Check out a handful of them below.

Chris Brown fans really want us to forgive his woman beating ass. Domestic abuse ISNT a mistake it’s a CONSCIOUS choice. Rihanna going back to him didn’t excuse his behavior as most domestic abuse victims do it continuously. He was cancelled after that & always will be. — cici -- (@melaninporn) February 12, 2018

Rihanna is saluting her 20s in the most comical (and sartorial) way!

Before she turns 30 on Tuesday, Bad Gal RiRi celebrated her pre-birthday celebrations by wearing herself. With a bold red lip (from her very own Fenty Beauty?), muted pink sunglasses and metallic hoop earrings, she kicked off her birthday with an “I Hate Rihanna” fashion statement.

And even more hilarious: in smaller print, her oversized shirt-turned-mini dress also read “Don’t Trust Anyone Under 30.”

Rihanna shared her ensemble on Instagram Story Monday writing, “Last day to make a bad decision and blame it on my 20’s,” and a side-eye emoji.

While Rihanna is a fan of unique designer looks and haute couture pieces, she toasted her last moments in her 20s with a $130 from Melgaard.

Of course, this isn’t her first time making a statement with a single shirt.

Back in October 2016, Rihanna made a $35 #WithHer print look fashionable with a $4,400 Louis Vuitton bag for the ultimate high-low combination.

Today marks Rihanna‘s 30th birthday, and with this milestone comes the many ways we can celebrate: listening to “Diamonds” on repeat, slipping on a pair of Fenty x Puma slides, or … twerking. But instead, we’re focusing on achieving the most perfect face beat possible, using a few of the tips we’ve learned from Rih since the launch of Fenty Beauty.

1. Monochromatic makeup is always a good idea

From the moment she launched her makeup line, Rihanna not only matched the shades on her eyes, lips and cheeks, she matched her makeup to her outfits as well. Our favorite use of the technique? The lavender look she sported at the Fenty Beauty launch at Harrods, which included pale purple eye shadow, highlighter and lipstick to match her dress.

2. There should never be fewer than 40 foundation shades

Rihanna has proved many points when it comes to fashion and beauty (a bra is a sufficient top, your hair can be any color you desire, etc.), but one of the most important is the fact that there should be a foundation shade for every skin tone — a point she proved with by launching an initial collection of 40 full-coverage shades ranging from fair to deep.

3. Your highlight can be yellow — or purple

Bored with all the regular highlighters shades on the market? Opt for a gold tone instead, thanks to her cult-favorite Killawatt highlighter, or try the purple version.

4. There is such a thing as one-size-fits-all makeup

Keeping on the trend of makeup that works for literally everyone, Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty with just one lip shade, a pale pink glittery gloss (which she loves to apply by swiping it on top of a tube of lipstick first). Just as promised, it looks good on all skin tones — so she tried the trick again with a just-right-for-everyone matte red liquid lipstick.

5. Literally anything goes

The most important of all of Riri’s beauty rules: there aren’t any beauty rules. Whether you stick with a sheer gloss or rocking green lipstick is more your speed, do as Rihanna does and just do you.
