TONY Hadley shocked Spandau Ballet fans around the world last year when he announced his departure from the band.

But just who's the man with the golden voice? Here is what we know...

Rex Features Tony Hadley is a British singer

Who is Tony Hadley? What is his background?

Anthony Patrick "Tony" Hadley was born June 2, 1960, in London.

He is an English pop singer-songwriter, actor and radio presenter.

He shot to fame in the 1980s as the lead singer of the new wave band Spandau Ballet.

He is also a solo artist and has enjoyed sell-out tours.

Tony quit Spandau Ballet in 2017.

It's now been revealed he is set to guest star on ITV's comedy, Benidorm.

When did Tony Hadley join Spandau Ballet?

Spandau Ballet are an English band formed in London in 1979.

They became one of the most successful groups to emerge during the New Romantic era.

Tony was the singer of the band and he joined brothers Gary Kemp and Martin Kemp on guitars, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble.

The band split in 1990 but got back together again in 2009.

Why did Tony Hadley quit Spandau Ballet?

Tony tweeted this statement to reveal he was no longer in the band: "Due to circumstances beyond my control, it is with deep regret that I am required to state that I am no longer a member of the band Spandau Ballet and as such I will no longer a member of the band Spandau Ballet

He went on: "And as such I will not be performing with the band in the future "

Responding to his abrupt exit, Spandau Ballet wrote on their website: "Much to our frustration, Tony had made it clear in September 2016 that he didn’t want to work with the band anymore. This has not changed and 2015 was the last time we were able to perform or work with him. So we have now made the decision to move on as a band."

However, a source told The Sun that money was the major factor in Tony leaving.

They said: “Tony decided he’d rather do small solo gigs making money for himself than performing with Spandau.

“The rest of the band are totally bewildered by his decision as they prefer to play huge gigs more sporadically — and they’re tired of trying to talk him round.

“He’s determined to focus on things for himself ahead of the group. The discussions have completely broken down and both sides are digging their heels in. Things have escalated over more than 12 months and it

has become a real feud now.”

In the past, there has been in-fighting in the band.

Shortly after the band split up in the 90s, there was a disagreement about royalties.

Tony, along with Steve and John launched an unsuccessful court case against Gary for a share of his songwriting royalties.

Although they vowed to appeal the verdict, they later decided against this.

The new series is the hit sitcom’s 10th since it first aired in 2007.

Package-holiday comedy Benidorm returned for an incredible tenth series. I can see why – its Brits abroad slapstick manages to be both funny and clever, laughing at and with the holiday makers. Only writers this confident could come up with a scene where bigoted Eddie sits by the pool and describes his grand daughter’s work in Germany as a trip to ‘Hitler’s heartland’ where she will be with ‘lesbians in comfortable shoes.’

Everybody knows he is being a moron, but Benidorm isn’t afraid to say these are exactly the morons we all live with and indeed, are related to.

The funniest moments came from a scene-stealing turn from Tony Hadley as the wedding singer at Joyce and Monty’s shambolic island wedding. Gamely turning his warbles up to maximum karaoke bombast, the Spandau Ballet singer managed to be over-the-top while still making True bring a tear to the eye.

Benidorm celebrates how ridiculous and yet lovable most Brits are: uncouth, smutty, terrible jokers and yet open-minded, generous and above all, indiscriminate in our love of other people’s sunshine. It made me really want to join them.
