TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - Petinju Amerika Serikat, Danny Garcia, mengalahkan rekan senegaranya, Brandon Rios, dalam pertarungan tinju dunia kelas welter di Mandalay Bay Event Center, Las Vegas, Sabtu, 17 Februari 2018. Garcia, 29 tahun, tampil dominan dan akhirnya menang KO atas Rios, 31 tahun, pada ronde kesembilan. Berkat kemenangan ini, ia berhak menantang Keith Thurman dalam perebutan gelar juara versi WBC dan WBA akhir tahun ini. Garcia menguasai ronde pertama hingga ketiga. Pada ronde keempat, kedua tim bisa dikatakan imbang. Setelah memasuki ronde kelima, Garcia mulai mengandalkan kelincahannya. Pada ronde kesembilan, Rios sebenarnya sempat menekan lawannya. Tapi sebuah tinju keras tangan kanan Garcia membuatnya terjatuh. Wasit akhirnya menghenitkan pertandingan.
Dengan kemenangan ini, rekor Garcia berubah menjadi 44-1 dengan 20 KO. Sedangkan catatan Rios menjadi 34-4-1 dengan 24 KO. Danny “Swift” Garcia (33-1, 19 KOs) adalah petinju tangguh mantan juara dunia WBC kelas Welter asal Philadelphia.
Danny Garcia found himself in a tougher fight than he probably expected, but was able to close the show in the 9th round when he timed a right hand counter that crumbled a game Brandon Rios.
Rios showed flashes of being the all-action fighter he used to be, but you could also tell he was a little bit worn and a little bit slow. Even still, Rios got right in Garcia's chest as he chased him around the ring, throwing a lot of short shots on the inside.
Garcia, however, was able to use lateral movement to keep away from the brunt of Rios' offense while picking his shots, which mostly consisted of a lot of right hand leads and counters. Ultimately it was this right hand guillotine that ended the fight.
Rios collapsed into a dead heap, and even though he managed to get to his feet, he was clearly not in good shape to continue and the referee rightfully waved it off.
Shawn Porter crashed the ring during the post-fight interview to challenge Garcia to a fight, which erupted into a fracas that seemed to piss off announcer Jim Gray, who ordered Porter out of the ring so he could do his interviews. All in all, a pretty eventful Saturday.

Gavril, who floored Benavidez in the final minute of their Fight of the Year nominee, promised a different outcome in Saturday's rematch.
