The 24th annual SAG Awards were handed out tonight at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and it appears there are serious front-runners for the acting Oscars.
Fox Searchlight’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won three Actor trophies tonight, including the marquee film ensemble prize. Also, Frances McDormand won for her lead role, and Sam Rockwell won for supporting. See the full winners list below.
Gary Oldman continued his awards-season run, winning Lead Actor for his tour-de-force turn as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.
Likewise, the other winner in supporting category for film might be tough to beat at the Oscars: Allison Janney, for playing Tonya Harding’s mom in I, Tonya. It was her seventh SAG Awards, spanning The West Wing, American Beauty, The Help and the Harding biopic.
On the TV side, NBC gave broadcast nets a boost with two wins for This Is Us: Ensemble in a Drama Series and Sterling K. Brown for Male Actor. HBO’s Big Little Lies and Veep also won twice. Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgard took trophies for playing unconventional spouses in Big Little Lies, and Veep was voted the winner for comedy ensemble — surprisingly its first — with lead Julia Louis-Dreyfus also winning for the Selina Meyer role. The actress has been undergoing chemo treatments and was unable to attend the ceremony. She tweeted this, though:
I wish I could have been @SAGawards tonight but have to admit it's pretty fun to watch in my pj's. So honored to win. So proud to be a union member. So happy for my @VeepHBO bozos for winning ensemble award. Miss being at the table with you all. How was the chicken? — Julia Louis-Dreyfus (@OfficialJLD) January 22, 2018
It also was Kidman’s first win in her 10th nomination.
HBO was the big winner among networks with four, followed by NBC’s two. Netflix and Showtime took one apiece. And Fox Searchlight tripled up on the competition with the three Actors for Three Billboards. Focus got the one for Darkest Hour and Neon/30WEST took the other for I, Tonya.
There was plenty of #MeToo-related talk tonight but nothing too controversial as women clearly were in the spotlight. All of the presenters were female as was the host. The SAG Awards never has had a host — until tonight. Executive producer Kathy Connell and the SAG Awards Committee are breaking a long-standing custom by assigning those duties to Kristen Bell of the Bad Moms films House of Lies alum.
Conversely, there was very little political talk Dunday night — in fact, the only time Donald Trump’s name was mentioned was during the clip for Anthony Anderson’s Black-ish nomination.
Morgan Freeman accepted tonight’s Lifetime Achievement Award. After accepting the honor from EGOT winner and fellow The Electric Company alum Rita Moreno — who was in a playful mood and noted that she’s known Freeman for 50 years — he said backstage: “I got on stage first time when I was 8 and I played Little Boy Blue in a pageant. By 12, there was no question (he wanted to be an actor.” He later blew off a reporter’s question about whether Hollywood awards are “too white.” Instead, he focused on the career honor. “You have to give that some thought because the title is Life Achievement. The inference might be to get off the stage, you’re done. My hope is that is not the case and they were saying congratulations, so far.”
