Roger Federer swats aside Marton Fucsovics to reach Australian Open quarter-final without dropping a set

Roger Federer maintained his record of not having dropped a set at the Australian Open with a straightforward victory over Marton Fucsovics to reach the quarter-finals.

The 25-year-old Hungarian was a surprise face in the fourth round and acquitted himself well on Rod Laver Arena but ultimately proved no match for the defending champion, who won 6-4, 7-6, 6-2.

The victory sends Federer through to the last eight in Melbourne for the 14th time and 52nd overall in grand slams, where he is likely to be more severely tested by Tomas Berdych.

This was a first meeting for the pair, although Federer played Fucsovics' coach Attila Savolt in the second round in Melbourne 16 years ago.

Federer was also playing during the day for the first time all tournament after three matches at night but had no problem making the adjustment and is the oldest man to reach the quarter-finals here since Ken Rosewall in December 1977.

Federer sealed his place in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in routine fashion this morning winning 6-4, 7-6, 6-2.

He was playing in the day session for the first time during the tournament and there was a furore around it meaning he wasn’t playing in one of the prime slots.

It didn’t hamper his form despite a battling second set and he reckons the only difference was the tightness of his racket strings as the worst of the heat stayed away.

But he wasn’t sure where his wife Mirka had got to after she dashed off early.

"I was considering sunglasses and a towel for the beach but, no, the only thing is the racket strings are a bit tighter to help control the ball, but it's not crazy hot today,” Roger Federer said.

Federer was speaking moments after dispatching Marton Fucsovics in straight sets to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals.

And with the match being played in the Rod Laver Arena, Federer was asked about his own dedication to the tennis legend - The Laver Cup.

Federer’s management company, TEAM8, Jorge Paulo Lemann and Tennis Australia all helped put together the tournament last year.

And it was the first time ever fans got to see both Federer and Nadal feature on the same side of the net.

However, Federer has admitted the two could have teamed up much sooner in their careers.

Novak Djokovic was knocked out the Australian Open by Hyeon Chung

Djokovic, 30, crashed out the Australian Open in straight sets at the hands of 21-year-old Hyeon Chung.

It was the Serb’s first Grand Slam appearance since his return from injury - although he did have to have treatment on his long-standing elbow injury before the start of the second set.

Federer has spent plenty of time out of the game only to keep up his winning runs, taking two Grand Slam titles in 2017.

And Maclagan, who used to coach Andy Murray, thinks the Swiss legend has set the bar too high.

He told Eurosport: “I don't think Djokovic that far away.

“There were plenty of times he could get back into the match and perhaps Federer has set the bar unrealistically high.
