Kyrgios, Nadal and Gavrilova all won in straight sets on Monday night after a day of upsets.
Venus Williams, Jack Sock, John Isner and CoCo Vandeweghe were among the seeds to fall on the opening day, setting up a big day two of the tournament.
RECAP OUR COVERAGE OF DAY ONE IN THE BLOG BELOW
No.10 seed Vandeweghe was stunned by Timea Babos in straight sets after making the final at Melbourne Park last year.
The American revealed after the match she had been bedridden in the days leading up to her first round clash with the flu.
media_camera CoCo Vandeweghe during her first round match.
Her coach, Aussie great Pat Cash, said Vandeweghe had barely practised before the loss to Babos.
“CoCo Vandeweghe I’m proud of you,” he wrote on Facebook. “After 5 days sick in bed w (sic) flu 1 x 20 min practice back to bed 1x30 min yesterday and only 4 /5 half meals in the week and struggling to breath (sic) you still decided to get out and give it a real try.”
DAY one of the Australian Open provided many highlights - and even more upsets.
But it was a solid day for the locals, with four Aussies progressing through to the second round.

She was the fourth Australian behind Nick Kyrgios, John Millman and Matthew Ebden to progress through to the round of 64.
Gavrilova won 6-1, 6-1 in 64 minutes - quite an extraordinary scoreline given the 22-year-old was broken in the opening game of the match.
Kyrgios' cheeky GF comment 0:47
Kyrgios and Millman were succesful earlier in the evening, progressing through to their respective second round matches in straight sets.
Kyrgios defeated Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, while John Millman was too good for Borna Coric with a convincing 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 win.
Kyrgios had a minor tangle with chair umpire Fergus Murphy in the opening set, but recovered to take out the match in less than two hours.
Meanwhile, world No.1 Rafael Nadal posted a clincal straight sets win over Victor Estrella Burgos
Noisy fans, angry Kyrgios 0:32
It was already billed as one of the most open grand slams in history and the Australian Open now looks even more so following some early big-name exits.
For local fans, it has been a brilliant day one, but the same can’t be said for Americans with only one of the ten US players to have completed their matches by the early evening winning.
That contrast was typified by Aussie Matthew Ebden’s stunning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over American 16th seed John Isner.

In the biggest win of his career Ebden broke the big-serving Isner early and often — compared to Isner’s usual record, at least — earning a second-round berth at his home slam for the third time.
Isner had beaten Ebden in straight sets in their previous three meetings. The 30-year-old will face Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round.
Fellow Australian Sam Stosur didn’t fare as well against Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig.
Despite taking the first set 6-4 and having a match point in the second, Stosur fell short in three sets.
It is the third straight year Stosur has lost in the first round at Melbourne Park.
Aussie Ebden upsets Isner 0:53
Estonian Kaia Kanepi, who upset former Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-2, awaits the winner in the second round.
Incredibly, three of the four semi-finalists at the most recent grand slam — last year’s US Open — haven’t even survived the first day of action with Americans Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens and CoCo Vandeweghe all gone.

It is now guaranteed that there will be a first-time Australian Open finalist in the Women’s Singles, while only two former champions (Angelique Kerber and Maria Sharapova, both having not played their first round matches) remain in the draw.
American 13th seed Stephens was beaten 2-6 7-6(2) 6-2 by Chinese world No.34 Zhang Shuai on Monday, continuing her stunning and puzzling decline since winning September’s US Open.
Stephens' poor form continues 1:25
Stephens, 24, served for the match up 5-4 in the second set before capitulating. She has not won a single match since claiming her maiden major on home soil and has now lost eight straight matches in WTA and Fed Cup competition.

She was followed out of the tournament by fifth seed Williams, who went down in straight sets to dangerous unseeded Swiss Belinda Bencic 6-3 7-5.
The last time neither Williams sister was in the second round of the Australian Open, Steffi Graf was world number one, Martina Hingis hadn’t won a Slam and Rafael Nadal was in primary school.

Vandeweghe, the 10th seed, and considered a genuine dark horse to win the title, then joined the scrap heap in a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 loss to Timea Babos.
Unheralded local wildcard Jason Kubler threatened a huge upset by taking an set off men’s 10th seed Pablo Carreno Busta before losing 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-1.
Williams bows out early 1:43
US Open finalist and 11th seed Kevin Anderson is also out, losing a near four-hour five-setter against Brit Kyle Edmund, 6-7(4), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Nick Kyrgios leads a healthy local charge as world No.1 Rafael Nadal finally kickstarts his 2018 season on day one at Melbourne Park.
Tomic: 'I count my millions' 0:31
Kyrgios, buoyed by winning the lead-up Brisbane International in front of his home fans, has the late match on Hisense Arena, against Brazil’s Rogerio Dutra Silva.
He is one of nine Australians in singles action on day one with women’s hopes Daria Gavrilova and Samantha Stosur beginning their tournament runs.
Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, riding high in the rankings again at world No.2, starts her quest for a maiden Grand Slam title against Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu on Margaret Court Arena.

Day 1 of the 2018 Australian Open has been one to remember, with Australians performing particularly well while the USA had one of its worst in grand slam history.
Nick Kyrgios pulverised his Brazilian oppoenent Rogerio Dutra Silva with a dominant display, while Daria Gavrilova shook off early nerves to do likewise to Irina Falconi.
Sam Stosur dominated the first set and a half against Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig but couldn't finish her off, the world number 41 crashing out in three sets.
Alex Bolt and Jason Kubler suffered difficult losses, while Matthew Ebden put in perhaps the performance of the day against 16th seed John Isner to beat him in four.
Sloane Stephens, Jack Sock, Venus Williams and CoCo Vandeweghe all bombed out in what proved to be a day Americans would rather forget. Of the 14 Americans that took to the court, only two will go on to fight another day at the Open.

LIVE SCORES: Day 1 of the 2018 Australian Open
10:17pm: And that's it! 6-1 6-1 - Gavrilova crushes Falconi to make it into the second round
That was comprehensive. There were a couple of blips - a break in the first and second set, but only conceding two games is comprehensive.
Quality play.
She looks great - beaming after her win and during her interview.
"All I thought about was competing today and I did that quite well."
9:56pm: BREAK in the second set - first game of the second set goes to Gavrilova.
She consolidates the break to make it 2-0 in the second.
9:46pm: It was tight at the start, but then it wasn't.
Gavrilova steams through the last five games of the set including another two breaks. She takes it 6-1.
She's got into her groundstroke form and looks like she'll be icing this pretty quickly.
9:37pm: Dasha gets the crucial break, and consolidates it to lead 4-1 in the first set.
It's been grinding tennis so far, but Gavrilova is slowly getting on top.
She is working over Falconi's backhand wing with good success.
9:20pm: Gavrilova ominously broken in the first game of the match, but proceeds to break right back!
Starting to get into her work now.
9:10pm: Daria Gavrilova on court now - she's ready to go against Irina Falconi.
Nadal is through against Victor Estrella Burgos, with a 6-1 6-1 6-1 win. Only took about 10 minutes more than Kyrgios to get it done.
8:38pm: WOW, Nick Kyrgios through in less than 90 minutes
That was super impressive from Nick... Dominant off both wings and didn't miss a beat with his serve.
Almost felt bad for Rogerio Dutra Silva by the end - he was purely outmatched for power and class.
On that kind of form, and you hate to say it so early but you have to, you have to think Nick is going to do some damage in this tournament.
8:30pm: And Nick Kyrgios gets his break in the third set, and consolidates. Just one game away from a victory in his first round match.
The match only started just over an hour ago...
Nadal's just taken his second set - 6-1 6-1 there.
Some classic Nick from earlier in the match. Some good banter in there!
Kyrgios bickers with the umpire
8:20pm: On serve in the third set between Kyrgios and Dutra Silva.
Rafael Nadal still trying to close out the second set in his match on Rod Laver Arena.
Aussie John Millman has also progressed through to the second round with a win over Croatia's world number 46 Borna Coric 7-5 6-4 6-1.
7:58pm: And just like that... Kyrgios wins his second set. 6-1 6-2 so far.
It's been simply dominant.
Nadal is up a break in his second set. Also dominant.
7:38pm: Kyrgios smashes through the first set in just about half an hour. 6-1.
He's really starting to heat it up now - and it's looking grim for his opponent.
Nick is in red hot form. And he breaks him early in the second. Looking ominous...
Elsewhere Rafa Nadal on Rod Laver Arena has also taken the first set in his match 6-1.
Yuichi Sugita has defeated American Jack Sock in four sets, 6-1 7-6 5-7 6-3 to clear Kyrgios' path on his side of the draw.
Marcos Baghdatis is through as well, as are Gilles Simon and Ivo Karlovic.
7:27pm: Kyrgios up an early break in the first set against Dutra Silva.
Goes up 4-1 early on, but it's not all one-way traffic. Kyrgios clearly has the weapons to get away from the Brazilian. His serve in particular proving hard to handle.
And he's also copped a code violation for telling the crowd to shush, for those playing at home.
7:10pm: Kyrgios holds his first serve of the tournament.
Dutra Silva battles hard but Nick's power gets him there after a brief struggle.
7:00pm: Nick Kyrgios is out on court!
The most anticipated match (from an Australian perspective) is up next - Nick Kyrgios is now warming up on the court.
His haircut looks fresh, he's wearing a nice hoodie - the 22-year-old is ready to rock and roll.
He's always made the second round, he's never lost in the first. Against Rogerio Dutra Silva it should be no different.
6:35pm: Sam Stosur stopped in her tracks by Monica Puig
Aussie Sam Stosur has been eliminated from the Australian Open after having a match point!
You have to hand it to Monica Puig, who took the match 4-6 7-6 6-4, who was down a set and a break and then down a match point. A great effort, but you do feel for Sam who looked great for the first set and a half.
6:18pm: Rogowska through to second round 6-3 6-7 6-2 in all-Aussie affair
Unseeded local Olivia Rogowska has become the first Australian woman through to the second round of the Australian Open, outlasting compatriot Jaimee Fourlis in three sets.
The unseeded 26-year-old, ranked 168 in the world, battled for a 6-2 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 victory in a two-hour, all-Australian affair on show court 3.
Rogowska, a Melbourne native, recovered from a blown second-set tiebreaker to jump out to a 5-1 lead against the 18-year-old wildcard before winning through to her third second-round appearance at Melbourne Park. (AAP)
In the Stosur match, it's on serve in the third set.
5:53pm: SET TO PUIG! WE'RE GOING TO A THIRD!
Puig was up 4-1 in the tie-breaker, but Stosur battled back to get a match point. She didn't capitalise there and Puig held her nerve. She then went on to win two consecutive points to take the set 7-6.
We're off to a decider...
5:39pm: Puig has broken back, and then the pair have traded some service games.
What looked like it was going to be a cruise for Stosur now looks to be slightly more complicated than that, with Puig fighting back.
Puig up 6-5, Sam serving to stay in the set.
5:10pm: AMAZING STAT ALERT!
Venus Williams loss in the first round means it's the first time in 20 years there's not a Williams sister in the second round of the Australian Open.
5:04pm: And Sam goes up another break in the second set... The world number 41 is looking hot hot hot!
Just two games away from the second round.
4:56pm: And she claims the first set! Comeback begins with plenty of promise. Sam Stosur wins the first set against Olympic Gold medallist Monica Puig.
6-4 in the first. The second set is underway.
4:30pm: Sam Stosur has gone up a break in her first set against Olympic Gold medallist Monica Puig.
She's only just returning from injury - so victory here would be a monumental achievement for the Aussie.
3:51pm: 30-year-old Aussie Matt Ebden is through to the second round of the Australian Open with an upset win over 16th seed American John Isner 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-3.
He's clearly fit - he says he could keep going after that!
"I feel like I just walked on the court after a couple of hours."
38 winners. 13 unforced errors. Jim Courier says it's "one of the best wins of his career."
He'll face Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round now. Massive from Ebden.
Read the full story and watch highlights of his win here
Coco Vandeweghe has become another one of the Americans to lose - going out 7-6 6-2 to Greece's Maria Sakkari.
What an opening day.
3:45pm: Aussie Matt Ebden closing in on that fourth set now... Just two games needed to progress to the second round.
You can always look forward to some interesting threads at the Australian Open. Here are some interesting ones from Grigor Dimitrov.
3:30pm: Aussie Matthew Ebden is looking good to take his first round match of the Australian Open against John Isner.
He's up a break in the fourth set, which will win him the match.
Dennis Shapovalov is out on court, and has won his first set.
2:59pm: VENUS WILLIAMS is out of the Australian Open
Huge upset here on the first day of the Australian Open! Venus Williams has gone down to Belinda Bencic 6-5 7-5, breaking serve on the 12th game of the second set.
Read the full story on Venus here
Massive news to start the tournament, with the American joining the 13th seed Sloane Stephens, 31st seeded Ekaterina Makarova and 24th seed Dominica Cibulkova as going out on the first day.
Coco Vandeweghe is also under huge pressure, a break down in the second set having lost the first.
Venus Williams out of Australian Open
It's not a good day for the Americans.
Ebden and Isner are on serve for all those wanting to follow the Aussies, while Jason Kubler has gone out in a rather disappointing fourth set 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-1 to Pablo Carreno-Busta.
