While a fifth series was already confirmed way back in the Spring of 2016, how long fans will have to wait for Tommy Shelby’s chronicles to continue has remained a mystery.
Immediately after tonight’s transmission of the Peaky Blinder season four finale, it’s been confirmed that there’s quite the wait for season five.
“CONFIRMED: #PeakyBlinders will return to @BBCTwo in 2019,” the Beeb’s official Twitter page revealed.
Tonight’s nail-biting conclusion proved too much for some viewers who were left shaken by the death of Arthur Shelby.
When does Peaky Blinders season 5 start on the BBC? The BBC hasn't yet announced an air date for Peaky Blinders season five with the scripts still yet to be written. Previous seasons of the BBC show have had various premiere dates including September, October, November and May which means it could be at any time. While there is no trailer, fans are likely to get some teasers from the forthcoming run. Season four is currently airing on BBC Two and will be coming to a conclusion next week that it will take it into season five Steve Knight, who created the BBC drama, told Express.co.uk exclusively about season five: “It’s in my head, it’s not the best place for it to be. So I’m going to start writing that very soon and we will start shooting it next year. We will start shooting in the autumn.” The BBC show will be in production for a year and fans will have to wait a little while for the next season. Knight added: “It will be the normal turn around, it would be [airing in] spring of 2019.” WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SEASON OF PEAKY BLINDERS?
What will happen in Peaky Blinders season 5? Knight declined to give any details about what will happen in season five, saying: “I don’t want to give away how series four ends because it’s going to go in a particular direction.” His words suggest that there will be a big plot development in the season four finale that could change the course of the drama. On the season four finale of the BBC series, Knight said: “Hopefully it will end in a way that is expected and of course set up season five but not in a way that anyone will be looking for.” PEAKY BLINDERS SEASON 4 RELEASE DATE

Could there be a Peaky Blinders movie?
Series creator and writer Steven Knight and his executive producer Caryn Mandabach admitted there have been talks surrounding the possibility of a film spin-off.
But when questioned, Murphy told Deadline he was hesitant about committing.
He said: “I’m sort of ambivalent about it. I’m sort of like, ‘Eh, yeah, I don’t know, I’m not sure’.
“I love the idea sort of theoretically, but it has to come at the right time, you know? You can’t alienate the beautiful democratic thing of television where everyone just watches it,” he added.
“Cinema is trickier because you gotta pay your $10, you gotta leave the kids at home.
“You’ve got to do all of that, so it’s different and also you have to compress the story into probably just an event rather than the whole arc that we’ve normally been doing.
“It’s kind of a sexy idea, but I’ll reserve judgement until the idea is presented to me.”

A fifth series was originally confirmed back in the spring of 2016 as part of a double-commission by the BBC, but it was unclear when the period crime drama would actually return to screens until now. Like its most recent run, there will be six episodes.
While fans are waiting for the next televised chapter of Peaky Blinders, they'll surely be excited to know that showrunner Steven Knight has confirmed to Digital Spy that a proper West End musical based on the series really is happening.
"We were approached by people who said they thought it would make a great musical... so who would not want to do that?" Knight explained to us. "I'm taking it seriously. But I've got to get series five [of the TV series] out of the way [first]."

There's also a spirit range, fully sanctioned by the Shelby of course, in the works to give fans "a true taste of the 1920s" while tossing a few back in preparation for the new episodes in 2019.
In the meantime, writer Steven Knight is also keeping himself busy with a second series of Taboo, which will reunite him with Peaky Blinders guest star (and Knight's frequent collaborator) Tom Hardy.
