Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sudeep, Angad Bedi, Ivan RodriguesAli Abbas Zafar2 Stars (out 0f 5)Tiger is on the prowl again. He is still a super adroit, unstoppable livewire. So what if he is borderline brain-dead? Given the cloak of invincibility he dons, he is in no danger whatsoever of going extinct. What goes missing without a trace in, however, is logic. But what's that? The film is targeted at fans of Salman Khan. It's all strut and swagger, primed to give the constituency that the star serves more than its money's worth. He even sheds his shirt in one sequence.As for the rest of us, ordinary mortals who usually seek cinematic stimuli less extraordinary,, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, is a spy thriller that could have done with more sense and subtlety. But these attributes appear to be the last thing on the mind of the invincible, chest-thumping,-esque RAW agent-protagonist and his mates as they, teaming up with ISI operatives (yes, that's how woolly-headed it gets), take on their deadly common foes for the sake of(peace) and(humanity).We hear the film's title being uttered by one character or other on four separate occasions. On the first occasion it's a question, on the second a firm assertion, and on the third it exudes assurance. The final '', reserved for the final scene, is a pointer to the possibility that we haven't heard the last of the insuperable secret agent. Sounds a bit like a threat all right, but ifroars loud enough at the box-office, we've got to live with it.Filmed predominantly in Abu Dhabi, which passes off for war-ravaged Iraq, TZH is strictly mechanical, by-the-numbers filmmaking that throws at the audience random allusions to contemporary geopolitics but makes it a point to disown any connection with reality. The film, as a pre-credits rider avows, is inspired by a true event, but all 'places and names' in the story are fictitious. We would have known anyways.Tikrit becomes Ikrit and ISIS is rechristened ISC. But Mosul remains Mosul. There is also talk of a Caliphate. It is lorded over by a dreaded terrorist named Abu Usman. Fighting a last-ditch battle to save his turf from American drones and warplanes and the Iraqi army, he unleashes mayhem in the desert.The hyper-virile, stone-faced persona of Avinash Singh Rathore 'Tiger', which is stretched much further than it was in 2012's, strays dangerously close to snapping point. The spy walks in and out of raging fires with the nonchalance of a boy swatting flies.He has the blanket license to be part of improbable action sequences in which oil tankers turn into balls of fire, vehicles fly and do somersaults before exploding, and bullets are sprayed from all manner of weapons without let. Our man Tiger emerges from it all, time and again, not only in one piece but also without as much as a hair out of place.That his survival instincts and combat skills haven't lost their edge is established right at the outset. Tiger, out camping in the Alps with his son, encounters a pack of wolves. He keeps his wits about him and shakes the predators off his back. No big deal - it's all in a day's work for him. The attack of the wolves prepares him for much worse.When a group of Indian and Pakistani nurses - 40 of them - are taken hostage by religious extremists in Iraq - this part of the plot is yanked from newspaper headlines - a resting Tiger is nudged out of his cozy sinecure in Austria, where he now lives with his wife of eight years Zoya (Katrina Kaif), the selfsame Pakistani spy who fell in love with him in the precursor.Summoned by the Indian spy agency chief (Girish Karnad), Tiger and Zoya plunge into the mission aimed at taking out the terrorists and saving the nurses. The hero handpicks his comrades-in-arms - ageing tech whiz Rakesh (Kumud Mishra, who provides the lighter moments), explosives expert Namit (Angad Bedi, who has just enough to do not be lost in the din) and sharpshooter Azaan (Sudeep), the token Muslim patriot who carries the tricolour in his backpack and has to do more than the others to demonstrate his love for the nation.Inspired by an incident that is also at the heart of the Malayalam smash hitgoes haywire in pursuit of its outmoded notions of masculinity and heroism. The film robs the trapped women of any kind of agency. The only nurse allowed a voice and some space is Poorna (Anupriya Goenka, the sole female actor in the film who actually 'acts').has another bunch of cornered women - captives who work for the terrorists under duress. Zoya, who is instrumental in roping two ISI agents into the Indo-Pak rescue mission, turns the heat on the captors and liberates these girls single-handedly. Her entry scene, too, has the lady knock out a trio of muggers who raid a convenience store and live to regret the decision. End of story for Zoya. She, too, needs her hubby to rescue her from trouble in the film's climax.But we are getting ahead of ourselves.simply isn't interested in achieving any balance. The emphasis is unwaveringly on Salman Khan the Saviour. Katrina, fetching but flimsy, is compelled to take a backseat. Mercifully, the principal antagonist Abu Usman, played by Iran-born, UAE-raised Sajjad Delafrooz, is no pushover: he makes his presence felt in no uncertain terms.Undeniably impressive in terms of its scale and flawless technical attributes - the production design is fabulous, the action sequences are spectacular and the camerawork by Polish cinematographer Marcin Laskawiec is dazzlingly good -is an exercise that eventually rings utterly hollow.Its surface nous cannot conceal the sheer purposeless of all the noisegenerates. May be, at least for some, the star power on show might help the film paper over its patchy screenplay.
If you can stomach a hyper-masculine spy called Tiger, played by Salman Khan, snarling to the terrorist: “There’s nothing more dangerous than a wounded tiger”, then you are likely to enjoy this testosterone-charged ride. For those who scoffed at those words and found his threat pulpy, stay away from Tiger’s trail.
Bollywood star Khan returns as the titular hero in the espionage thriller Tiger Zinda Hai, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, and never lets us forget that he is an indestructible force to reckon with. An army of trained militants in Iraq are spraying bullets at this undercover agent on a covert operation to rescue hostages from the clutches of religious extremists, but he is still standing with his puffed out chest.
Veteran actor Girish Karnad, who plays Tiger’s boss and mentor, is foisted with sycophantic dialogues that highlight his protege’s super-spy skills. “This Tiger is sleeping, so never pull his tail,” he advises his colleague when they jointly try to nudge Tiger from his self-imposed retirement in Austria.
Tiger is now living an idyllic, domesticated life with Zoya (Katrina Kaif), the alluring Pakistani undercover agent from the first instalment of this series, Ek Tha Tiger. But his introductory scene is him fighting off a pack of wolves as he goes camping with his son.
Subtlety is given an absolute thrashing in this spy thriller. After the viewers are given a crash course on his super-human combat skills, the husband-wife spy duo are soon drawn to a mission that takes them to ISC-occupied Iraq, a group from a fictional self-styled caliphate, who have taken around 40 Indian and Pakistani nurses as captives.
Though this film should ideally have been a portrait of the global politics and how religious extremism is sacrificing humanity, all forces in this film are at work to showcase Khan’s swagger, brute strength and espionage tactics. So unless you are a Khan fan, you may find it tedious.
But what pulls you up from joylessness are the spectacular action sequences and the nuggets of humour that are inserted during the tense moments. The camaraderie between the agents on the free-the-nurses mission, who are naturally hand-picked by Tiger himself, puts a smile on your face.
Actor Paresh Rawal’s slimy character leaves an impact and so does the villain Sajjad Delafrooz who plays the terrorist ring leader, Abu Usman. Hollywood action director Tom Struthers has gone all out with car chases, bomb explosions, oil tankers bursting into flames and bullets being sprayed like they’re going out of style. Abu Dhabi, which has been dressed up as war-torn Iraq, doesn’t look contrived.
While the film is largely testosterone-laced, the vision of Kaif executing deadly stunts is a bloody sight to behold. While she’s stone-faced in emotional scenes, she seems to revel in pummelling people to the ground.
Jingoism is also one of the obvious threads of Tiger Zinda Hai. Tiger never lets anyone forget about his unwavering patriotism and is on call to remind his mates periodically about what’s good for them.
It can get a bit tiring. The twists are also painfully predictable and the ways in which Tiger outwits the terrorists aren’t particularly ingenious.
Watch this if you are in the mood to see a stoic, stone-faced swashbuckling superhero, aka Salman Khan, and some supremely well-executed action sequences. Don’t go looking for soul, though.
The Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer is an action-packed sequel of 'Ek Tha Tiger'.
As anticipated and suggested by the movie trailer, Tiger Zinda Hai is high on action - or do we say the entire film is only action, while story and emotions are completely overlooked?
With Salman-Katrina teaming up after over five years, Tiger Zinda Hai is an extension of the real life incident where in 2014, Indian nurses were abducted by Daesh but later released. But in the movie, director Ali Zafar Abbas, intending to warm India-Pakistan ties, shows both Indian and Pakistani nurses being abducted by a terrorist group in a hospital in Iraq.
Now, both the countries join hands against terrorism and the movie shows RAW and ISI working together to rescue 25 Indian and 15 Pakistani nurses.
The action saga unfolds after India's diplomatic corps pick RAW agent Tiger and Pakistan ropes in ISI agent Zoya for this dangerous mission of rescuing nurses safely from the deadly terrorist Abu Usman, played by UAE-based Iranian actor Sajjad Delfarooz.
The film seems quite unconvincing and hypothetical at many places. For instance, the way Tiger simply saunters into the terrorist infested area and rescues the nurses is quite hilarious. Also, a scene when Tiger and his team fearlessly walk in to the hospital which is guarded by terrorists and where the nurses are detained, is unbelievable. They enter the hospital under the pretext of being treated for burns but surprisingly they don't look burnt or tattered at all!
As the whole incident was quite obvious, seems the director had no story to tell and wraps up the movie with two hours and 15 minutes of thoughtless action, patching up the remaining few minutes with bits and pieces and a song by Atif Aslam.
Editing
Scenes appear from nowhere and are not related in many places in the movie.
Direction
Director Ali Zafar Abbas has put up an unimpressive work. The movie is largely about action and the emotion and connection are missing completely. He was just thinking about action so he is not able to get good performances from his actors.
Dialogue
The dialogues are poorly written. Some dialogues seem to take off but crash mid way, sounding funny or dragging. Also most of the dialogues are out of place. 20 per cent dialogues are in English which will be drawback because single screen theatre audience won't be able to understand.
Action
The movie is only about action, action and action. Though it is an action-thriller, the storyline and plot are missing. It aims to give an adrenaline rush through action alone, which is disastrous
Acting
Salman khan and Katrina both have done average acting. Sajjad has done good job. Others are just timepass.
Verdict
It's a waste of time to watch such an unreal movie that one wouldn't know whether it is comedy or action or both or it's a computer game. But if you are a fan of Salman and Katrina and watching them is enough, then it will be good enough
