This year is no different as Next opened its doors to customers during the small hours of Boxing Day.

However, this year the online sale kicked off at 3pm on Christmas Eve, giving eager shoppers a chance to pick up bargains ahead of time.

Womenswear, menswear, homeware and kids are all expected to be part of the deal.

What time does the Next winter sale start?

Next started its sale online on Christmas Eve at 3pm.

Their stores opened at 6am on Boxing Day for early risers.

If you're looking for earlier bargains from the retailer, Next has a clearance section on its site.

So, what's on sale?

Next has yet to reveal specific items that will be discounted during its sale, but there is a sneaky way to tell in-store if an item is going to be in it.

Items are usually marked by staff in the days before the sale starts - this handwritten scribble is the key to spotting what the discount will be.

The codes are written in pencil on the price tag - such as, B14, G4, OB9 and P7. Ignore the letters as the number usually relates to the price the items going down to.

Then you're just left with a number - that's generally the sale price of the item.

For online deals, keep an eye on the Next homepage - especially at 3pm on December 24.

How much will my Next delivery cost?

Next offer next day delivery to your home for just £3.99 - if you order by midnight.

However, the last day for next day delivery to home before Christmas is December 19.

If you order a product on December 20 you can still get it delivered to store the next day, which is free.

If you need an exact time slot you can pick the hour that works best for you at a cost of £5.99.

You can also pay £20 for unlimited deliveries for the year.

Kinnaree Surati, 21, of Rushey Mead, Leicester, who joined the queue at 5am, said: "It was very cold and pretty busy but everyone's friendly and just waits quietly for the doors to open.

"I come every year and I'd say it wasn't as busy as I've known it other years.

"The Next sale is really good this year, though."

Jo Tallack, general manager at the Highcross, said: “The annual Boxing Day sales are marked as an important date in the diary for shoppers and it has continued to do so for residents in Leicester.

Shoppers flooded into Birmingham city centre from 12.30am on Boxing Day morning to make the most of the sales.

A queue of almost 1,000 people snaked from Next at Bullring right down to the steps leading to St Martin’s Church.

There were cheers from the crowd when the store opened its doors at 6am.

You had to have a ticket to get in and shoppers were limited to selected waves to ensure the store wasn’t too crowded.

Many people had chosen to get out of bed early to pick up bargain childrenswear, much of which was half price off or more.

This is the eighth Boxing Day sale that mum-of-four Azrana has queued for.

She thinks it’s well worth it for kids clothes.

“I come to buy clothes for my four children,” says the Aston mum.

“It’s all for them, nothing for me unless I want a big item like a coat.

“The bargains are so good, I can get around £1000 of clothes for £500. It’s a good way to stock up for the year although we will carry on shopping!”

With temperatures close to freezing, some people stood for up to five hours wrapped in blankets and fur lined hats.

New graduate Manga Surdhar from Handsworth was there with his partner Jaz Kandda, from Handsworth Wood.

“This is the first time I’ve been on Boxing Day,” he said.

“Jaz has been before.

“We’ve been here since around 2.15am. I’m hoping for some bargains.”

Some shoppers suggested Next should give out mince pies and hot drinks.

Others said they wished Bullring would allow them to queue inside in the warm.

There were, however, queues inside for Selfridges, which opened at 8am.

The first people in line there were Junayd Hussain and Khuram Shabir from Stourbridge.

“We’ve been waiting since 4am,” said Khuram.

“I’m not looking for anything specific, just clothes and electricals.”

Once the shutters opened, handbags flew off the shelves in no time.

There were Chloe bags reduced from £1,420 to £990 and Jimmy Choo heels cut from £550 to £350.

Jannae from Edgbaston bought a pair of Stella McCartney wedge pumps that were half price at £315.

Some shops, such as John Lewis at Grand Central, remain closed on Boxing Day but Debenhams was busy.

Many stores throughout the city offered up to half price deals.

One that was particularly busy was Khaadi where people were having to wait outside to get in.

According to Bullring, luxury watches were one of the most popular items bought over the Christmas period as shoppers chose to invest in luxury presents. Swatch’s bestselling watches, the ISIDOR Christmas special and XYou, were the most bought watches this year.

Other popular luxury gifts bought include Molton Brown products, Hugo Boss products, Smashbox make up, Cath Kidston sleepwear and TM Lewin accessories.

Michaela Moore, general manager for Bullring and Grand Central, said: “The annual Boxing Day sales are marked as an important date in the diary for shoppers and it has continued to do so for residents in Birmingham.

“Bullring and Grand Central saw bargain-hunters queuing from 12.30am, as retailers including Next, Selfridges and Debenhams are offering excellent discounts this year.

“Many use Boxing Day as an opportunity to treat themselves, as well as spending time with family and friends at one of our many restaurants.”
