ASB Unit Holders, Good News As PNB Announces Increase In Dividend And Bonus To Be Paid Out Jan 2018

KUALA LUMPUR: Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) group chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar said the restructuring of the group’s main investment companies helped the fund to outperform the broader stock market.

The 7.1% increase in net income to RM15.4bil during the first 11-month of the year allowed PNB to boost returns for its flagship funds Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) to a three year high.

“The growth was driven by stronger-than-expected economic growth and the successful implementation of PNB’s strategic plan,” Wahid told reporters at a briefing on Friday.

Assets under management at PNB swelled to a new high of RM276.5bil in the first 11 months of this year.

Wahid expects the fund’s size to end the year at about RM279bil with the completion of the sale of an office building in Brisbane, Australia.

“It has been an impactful year for us at PNB and I am happy that we are able to announce a higher income distribution for ASB unitholders today, including a special bonus,” he said.

“Despite a softer local market in the second half of the year, the majority of PNB’s strategic and core companies outperformed the KLCI,” he added.

The top performer for the fund was Malayan Banking Bhd , in which the fund has a 48% stake. The bank’s market value has risen 19% so far this year, hovering at RM101bil.

Sime Darby is up 4.7% year-to-date.

PNB will distribute 8.25 sen a unit for ASB for the year ending Dec 31, 2017, comprising a dividend of seven sen a unit, a bonus of 0.25 sen a unit and a special bonus of one sen a unit for up to 10,000 units.

The total distribution of RM10.7bil will benefit 9.1 million unitholders. The majority, numbering 7.5 million, will get an effective return of 8.25 sen.

Wahid also announced the payout of 3.65 sen a unit for its ASN, its first variable-price fund. This translates to a yield of 5%, contributing to a year-to-date total return of 15% as at Dec 21, 2017.

The transactions for ASB and ASN have been suspended from Dec 20 and will resume on Jan 2, 2018.
